If it's relatively easy to level to a high level, then no, there should be no respecs (It takes like 2 days to hit 80+ in D2 even without rushes). If there is no way to quickly gain levels, such as baal runs, then I would like to be able to respec, so long as it's not cheap.
if there were respecs in d2 you could just pump up bash when you are a low lvl barb and own everything, then when you get to a high enough level, just add them all to double swing and own everything.. and the game would have been way too easy.

They don't want people getting rushed through the game just to have another high level. I understand that. But it is part of what we love.
No, that was an accidental part of Diablo II/ Diablo II: LoD. They never intended "rushing" to be possible. And, if you've played Diablo I, you'll find that there is nothing of that sort.
Diablo II, in my opinion, was an accidental stray from the real meat and bones of RPG's.
I agree with OP, random dudes with like "lightningsorc" as name running around being fire/ice etc. As well as it not feeling very diabloish.
I wouldn't mind the idea if you had to spend the exact same number of points in each tree. So like you might mis place one in a tree where you were meant to click the one next to it.

I disagree. You should have to think about your character rather than just picking skills in a nonchalant fashion, knowing there is the option to respec.
Yeah, planning your character was almost as fun as actually playing it.

But what if the skill system in D3 is 3X more complexe than in D2, I certainly would welcome respecs. Plus it would make easier to test different builds. You still have planning to do though.
You just need to accept that your first character is a test, so that your following (specialized) ones will be better.

Yeah tbh a lot of the fun of D2 was planning characters. Planning gear/builds, roughly how much to put in Stamina, Dexterity etc. Respeccing does make it very wowish...
I do believe taking some things from wow is a good thing, but in regards to the Loot System and Skills (including the chance to respec) it needs to be more Diabloish.

And of course the price must be great.
I'm not saying respecs are a bad thing, I just like the feeling when I have created a character, and it really feels like a character and not just a template that can be switched around at will. What makes my character different from everyone elses? It also adds a measure of replayability to the game, and a reason to replay with the same class.
As far as testing builds, that's what singleplayer + character editors are for
I played tons of characters on /players8 in single player as tests for my mains on B.net.
With total respecing, you could just get one high level of each class, and never start a new character. It would be stupid.

I'm fine with respecs as long as they aren't too cheap or easy to access. They should do something like one respec allowed every 30 days (real time) or something along those lines. You shouldn't be able to respec at will just because you're rich.
I don't think any amount of time or gold should allow a total respec.

I do not see any reasons why a person should not be able to re-spec as much as they want. It's idiotic to force a player to wait an hour or a day or a year or 2 levels, or whatever before they can respec... it boils down to either wasting time not playing (for an arbitrary timer), or wasting time playing something you've done already.
I don't want to level up to level 600 20 separate times just to try out the various strategies of my favourite class, and see which I like the best, and which are stupidly underpowered.
having to try out 5 different character classes (before expansions) is by far more than enough grind/replayability a person ever has to endure.
Realize that even with full respeccing, a person still can't effectively change builds without getting different equipment... it still won't be too easy.
Forcing players to grind through a bunch of IDENTICAL boring quests and boring monsters they did 10 times already is not my idea of fun.
When a game is properly balanced, players will not all run the same builds! different skills will have different advantages on a team, and different advantages solo. Making re-speccing impossible doesn't prevent people from running cookie cutter builds anyway, it just makes them waste more time doing it.

In D2 you can get a character to 80 in 2-3 days. So you're saying you want 15 days (3 days x 5 classes) of gameplay before you never start a new character again, and just play the 5 you have until the end of time?
Count me out.

I think each character should get a limited supply of respecs. Or, maybe have a quest to achieve each respecs, which would entitle each character to a few, thus solving the problem of both "Messing up on a skill," and "Abusing respecs."
Yeah I don't think I'm down for the whole ''repeat boring quest x, y times''. Yeah it was alright doing that in D2 because if you're friends rushing you, you could get the forge and items that drop on the way. D3 does not seem like that, and re-speccing would definently help.
There is no such thing as abusing re-specs IMO, except for changing specs in combat, which should definately and ovbiously be disabled.
Regardless of how long it takes to level to 80 in Diablo 2, that was not the intention of blizzard, and that is not level 90-95, and that's generally only multiplayer with decked out items. Not only that, but 2-3 days is an extremely vague term meaning up to 36 hours. 36 hours of grinding my ass off is not fun. Why should people have to use cheats/character editors to just respec to another build in single player? (and why should it not be allowed in multi?)
