This season has been a boring one. Why? Because I accomplished my goals in one weekend. Technically, much less than a weekend if you add up all the hours.
Back in Season 3 I had to earn my items. When I completed a set it was a goal, like an achievement. I needed that set so I could get the fancy portrait frame. I feel good about having that portrait, I wear it with pride. Because...I earned it.
In Season 5 I don't feel like I earned anything. I went from T3>T7 in a matter of hours of casual play. The Firebird set was practically handed to me on a platter. I did not need to earn it, so I do not appreciate it. I tried the Firebird set dungeon, but it was brutally hard. So I went out and played to earn the DMO set. Then I did the DMO set dungeon, thereby completing Chapter 4. Getting past Chapter 4 and getting the portrait frame was the only reward this season, and it wasn't a very gratifying one.
I think progression has gotten out of hand in D3. Within the first weekend of Season 5 everybody and their momma was on T6 and paragon 700+. By Monday I already saw people inviting for T7-T10! This is ridiculous! Why have all these difficulties if players are just going to fly by them at warp speed? Nothing is earned or achieved anymore, it feels like everything is handed to you.
I want to play and enjoy D3. Not speedrun through it like a game of Spelunky. If I don't, I won't have anybody to play with because everybody is light years ahead of you speed farming T10 while they pass over paragon 1000 like it is meaningless.
What do you guys think? Is D3 too dang fast? Should it be a game that you play for 3 weeks and then dump until the next season? I don't think it should be.
This is the season i tryharded the most, without a doubt.... but i think giving a free complete set for easy tasks was a bit too much. It basically killed the early progression of the item hunt and forced players into a playstyle from max level. That's my main gripe, everything else is just the same old Diablo with paragon grind and GR fishing.
Auguments are still a good idea but key farming has to go sooner or later.
I absolutely agree OP. I actually can't believe you're just HANDED a full set now. Hell, I couldn't believe last season when they added upgrading rares in the cube.
I leveled solo this season and had to work the next day, so the first day I hit 70 then went to bed. By the end of the next day, I had my season journey set and every accompanying item I wanted, as well as an ancient weapon for the set from upgrading rares, which of course put me to farming T10. The ONLY thing that kept me playing for about two weeks after was the pursuit of some ancient LoN items.
I guess I've just got a different view on Diablo. It's always been about finding the items to me. But now they're handed to you. I just wish Blizzard wasn't so afraid of turning off brand new people to the franchise. I mean hell, as a 12 year old I wasn't while playing D2, that's WHY I played D2, I really loved trying to find super rare items.
At least I've got overwatch beta. But yea, I feel ya OP.
Uhm, actually there is a reward past chapter 4, which is extra stash space from getting Conqueror. Mind you, it's still super easy, but at least it's not completed in one day for a normal/casual player (statistically speaking).
I think we should have more goals, but the startup with the free set right now is a good idea. It's terribly boring having to grind your first set from yellows each new season, I'd rather have a quick set like now in S5, and then have more things to do.
One - Paragon 700 is VERY easy to get to, especially if you run a full group. Those people who got there that fast (beyond, of course, the "lolbot" comment) were running 4 man GR 55-60 within several hours of the start of S5, and you get a SHIT ton of lvls going up (Boosted a friend through a few GR 55s once, he went from 5 plvl to around 90 plvl in just 3 GR runs). Plvl 700 is just a number, and its a very low hanging number at that.
Two - The season journy is not over. You were saying shit about S3, where you had to be able to do T6 to get the portrait. It took me all of 8 hours /played to get to that point. Unless you have terrible RNG, it will only take an average of 8 hours to get to T6 (Bit shorter now, yes).
Three - If you REALLY want progression, play Hardcore. I use to knock hardcore off, saying it was only for masochists, but damn, I went ahead and made a HC this season, and its MUCH funner then softcore. Theres just something about knowing that a single mistake, or lagspike, can cause you to lose ALL of your progression that makes the game much more riveting.
So, no. Your average player will put in ~50 /played hours in order to 90% finish up the season (Complete the FULL journey, none of that "stop at portrait/stash bullshit), and even more to completely finish the journy (a spot on the leaderboards, and all conquests both SC/HC)
I guess it would come down to what your goals are?
If your goal is to play through the game once, then yes it would be really short.
If your goal is to hit GR100+, well then, its plenty long.
But there's no gameplay or progression difference between GR80 and GR100. It just takes longer, whoop de do
There's a huge amount of difference. You have to make sure every single person in your group understands and communicates every single move you make. Things like the wrong gem or the wrong reroll can stop you from completing the hard rift cycles. If there was no difference we would see a lot more players clearing GR 90s in groups and GR 80s+ solo. The higher rifts most definitely filter out the plebs quick.
It's been too short since the first season. This one seemed extra short though due to how they gave a free set and also removing the cubing 100 items part of the season journey. I think I was done with the journey in a week, where even last season was probably more like 2 weeks.
I personally liked the item hunt more when most sets were shit and Kadala didn't even exist, but that's just my opinion. These recent seasons have been pretty absurd like play an alt for 10 hours and take a leaderboard spot. Feels like the game is sort of empty when the gearing process is so fast and leaderboards don't even have enough people trying for the thousand available spots.
Agree, shit is too easy now, 6 hours of gameplay in season to start the endless grift farm, this season was the shortest one so far even with the set dungeons release .
The set was a headstart to get on your way to do the actual progression= gr, hitting t10 and farming it is what many considder the base of the game.
was it too much to get a full set? perhaps, how about getting 2 parts of all your class sets instead? that way you have less of a power jump but get a comparable helping hand to start, with a rorg and getting 1 of the missing pieces for 2 of the sets you'll be sporting 4p+4p.
solo gr70 as a season journey requirement was the hardest part for me as dh
It takes much longer to fully buff your character with caldesann's, then it takes to farm any green non-ancient set on T1 with yellow gear... progression is longer then last season. smh...
Trying gearing a 2nd or 3rd char of a different class wihout using Hedrigs Gift. It takes a lot longer.
I main Crusader this season, decided at P650ish to gear up a DH. Had a set part here or there in stash already.
After getting to lvl 70 with the DH, within 12 hours of gametime I completed all sets, all set dungeons and started farming TX easily. It's not so hard to lvl up an alt, even more so if it is a class that shares the base stat (that was not in my case).
BTW, almost P800 now, mainly have to solo, didn't augment anything yet... So, I see there is a lot of time I will have to invest to achieve my personal goals in this season. I completed Guardian in the season journey, BTW, as well.
However, back to topic, if next season there will be Haedrig gift, I think I will maybe use just 2 pieces to get into T2-3 more easily and use up the rest in Hardcore.

I took a top 20 leaderboard rank on my monk after playing it less than 10 hours total as my second class this season (started on wizard). WD cleared GR70 the second day I played it. Crusader cleared GR 70 wearing mostly DEX/INT drops with the mainstat rerolled to STR and most of the other rolls being useless.
The classes after the first are significantly faster gearing, mainly because things like paragon, cube items, etc are already all set up.
Gearing process was already too fast without haedrigs gift, the gift just made it terribly stupid.

you can easily ignore the season awards and play like old days. they are not forcing you you to use the rewards if you don't want to
The start of the season was WAY too fast, having a full set less than 1 hour after hitting 70 was stupid as hell imo

As a semi-casual (as in, casual player playing a bit too much), I finished the season journey in about 2 and a half weeks.
Since then, I've played only my HC seasonal char, and still loving it.

As a mainly NS player, I like to level fast in season to get stash tab. Grab tab fast, do back to NS. That was great for me.
