I read an article earlier this morning on this site - I recall it being an interview with Rob Pardo - where he stated that they've been using Will Wright's philosophy of a sequel: 1/3 new, 1/3 old, 1/3 improved. This could mean that we'll likely see one other class that is brought "back". But again, I'm only using what Rob Pardo said as a basis - nothing solid.
That being the case, I'd like to see the Necromancer back, but can almost guarantee he won't reappear as he is so similar to the Witch Doctor. In a way, I see the Witch Doctor as a hybrid of the Necromancer & Druid. Instead, I bet we see a sorcerer/sorceress in D3 or some sort of Ranger, Archer class similar to the Amazon, but not the Amazon itself - because I recall them being a race where the women played the dominant role in society.
if you look at common class types that most rpgs have:
diablo ii
fighter - barbarian
ranger - amazon
mage - sorceress
summoner - necromancer
other? - paladin
diablo iii
fighter - barbarian
ranger - ?????
mage - ?????
summoner - witch doctor
other - ?????

Please don't sign that ridiculous art direction petition. I've waited eight long years for Diablo III, not for another Diablo II expansion. And shut up about the Necromancer being gone. Diablo II didn't have any of the same classes as the first game (except for Sorcerer/Sorceress).
So why didnt they change the barbarian? Maybe, just maybe theres nothing behind it and people really do just want to play a necromancer. I dont miss the necromancer because I never played it but now that its not here I still dont miss it. I do however think it should be back due to popular demand.
I've had countless Barbs, Sorc's, Paladin's, even a Druid at one point, but never a Necro...
As long as Barb is back, Sorc, and Paladin come back in some shape, or form, I'll be happy...
Sorc, Paladin, Barb, and even Amazon, are the staple Diablo classes.. Everything else is just a fill in, and if they can make interesting fill-ins, all the better.

Lace me with the words of destruction and I'll explode, but supply me with the will to survive and watch the world grow.

Barbarians live at Mt. arreat(home of the worldstone), that alone was enough to get em a ticket to D3.
Get real, folks, the diablo you all knew is dead, a few years ago i said right here in this forum that D3 had a pretty good chance of being blizzard first bust (i was flamed to death ofc), and what you know, its not even beta and its already looking that way.
They did say that the barb was the perfect character for their design philosophy. I can see them reworking his weapon specializations though. I'd say this is the driving reason why the barb has come back, but I think he has definitely changed tree wise.
While the necro was a nice flavor, I never really enjoyed playing as him. I do, however, like the Witch Doctor, and while I may in the minority, I would have no problem with the WD replacing the necro completely.
Necros were a great class but yeah, I think the more new classes to experiment with, the better. Witch Doctor will give all the old necros a bit of what they're looking for while adding a whole new twist to it, so move on with the times.
I love the fact that D3 is coming
But there are some things they should not change.
1) They should keep the loot drops for everyone system so the fastest guy/girl gets the loot. D2 was all about the excitement because you got the item, it was awsome to have a "grandfather sword" drop in the cow level and swoop it from the ground.
2) they should keep the same trading system so you have the hands-on excitement of joining a trading game and selling your item for something better and ending up with a uber item at the end just by trading well. They should not make it to safe to trade either; You should get screwed over once or twice because you forgot to see if it was the real item or a switched white one (just like in real life). It was so fun to get tricked by people and feel sad about it. On the other hand it was so extremely exciting if you got the real uber item.
3) keep the random % on super items so you can be excited when you identify the item
4) have the possibility to do MF runs and have a MF character
5) about the same inventory size so you have to manage your inventory (e.g.: the amount of charms, ...)
6) Only one build per character with max 1 respecc option to make sure you really know what you are doing and have a unique character. You should calculate %'s before you make a character for specific items you may have found on other characters (or traded). So it is just perfect at the end. No soulbound crap.
7) (if you know something I have forgotten, please comment)
BASICLY: make D3 a bad-ass game that makes you feel excited and sad. Do not make it a wimpy nice but fun game. It is the survival of the fittest (diablo style)

That was exciting, but it also sucked if you killed a specific monster/boss and an elite item dropped and someone from a different party snatch your item. It will be a hard system to get right.

Yea, I know, but Diablo wasn't a nice game to play and it never should be. It's just like real life, sometimes you get screwed. The lows make the highs feel so much better.
edit: and btw internetpersonality, thx for the warm welcome to the forum. It's the first time I come here. I'm just a loyal LOD fan.
I would like to see some better graphics in this game... all blizzard games look like the same shit as all their games.. they all look same as before just bit "Shinier"... would like to see some inprovement as far as this goes.
Well let's look at the Necromancer's storyine then shall we?
Stated in Diablo lore, the Necromancers had no allegiance with Good or Evil, so much as 'balancers' between the two, if one side tips over the balance, they are there to fix it.
And also, from, a previous thread in this forum, we have came to the conclusion that the necromancer class is indeed the one who destroyed both Diablo's and Mephisto's soulstones.
Now, if the Necromancer was indeed the one who destroyed the soulstones, wouldn't this be a great impact of the paladins? A lone wanderer who dwelt within magicks of the dead defeated evil where a Zakarum Paladin could not? A jealously sequence might occur here
I always wanted a Paladin or Necro hireling. I have made a Warcraft3 map where a necro follows you and auto-casts skellies and I adjusted the number of simultaneously summoned bonelings to something around 5-6 in map editor. And it was quite fun. Assaulting a heavily defended base with an army of foolish undead and witnessing the fall of desperate ennemy overrun by the increasing number of each newly raised undead while you crush their fortifications onto their head with your melee tank hero was quiet simply awesome!
Off Topic: Witch Doctor is Assassin+Necro hybrid for now. And I didn't like WD. He is not stylish. He reminds me Shadow Hunter or Witch Doctor..wait..:O..Zomg..they didn't even change the name..Nerds!.. This is too much troll.

The Necro. it's hard to say I won't miss him, but like I've said.
I can't wait to play with the Witch Doctor.
Looks badass.
