One type of merc in D2 could use a class-specific item, the barb mercs in act 5.
Imagine hiring a Necro who could use homonculus...and summon minions!
I'd rather have no mercenaries, and fight with random packs of allies I'd find in the wilderness, similar to those in the Bloody Foothills, only smarter and more interesting.
amazons should be merces cause theyre were said to be ones from time to time.
merces should have a mini skill tree with 4 skills that you could invest their own points into when they level up.

you should be able to have a group of meces like in dynasty warriors that specialize in a certain attack (spears, swords, etc.) and be able to choose the max amount you want (i think it was 6 in the game). each one could have a certain skill like an aura or special attack that you can assign to them, and assign them specific orders like "group up" or "kill anything you see" etc.

yeah i realized that too late after i posted, but it would work nice for single player. maybe if you had 2 merces (3 max?) so it would be like a party like in BG of FF

There is a difference though, that was just a simple follow pet that was really weak, a mercenary is a companion, I have my doubts about them coming back with the inventory and all, it might conflict with the soldiers in the dungeon or maybe they simply count as pets....
They weren't mercs like in LOD in the trailer. You got them from the quest where u escorted Cain out as a help.
Personally I really think we don't need a frikin mercs. Make the game that way that we don't need them. It is just so stupid in LOD now when your merc can give you about every pala aura in game with those runewords.. so pala is asking "wanna party".. "no thanks I have all auras I need". Also when properly equipped the merc can take out almost every monster out there.
If you play classic you can get a merc too, but he will dissappear when you change act. I think this is a nice thing if you wanna have them for a while. But I wouldn't want a permanent merc.

By the way; I know these were in Diablo already, but these are like a summoned Mercenary. You give them Essences and other kinds of enhancements.
I hope if they bring back 'M4H' Mercs for Hire that they will do something about that.
That is all I used my money for tho.
Repairing my equipment and resurrecting my merc if need be.
