As long as idiots are spending a metric shit-ton of cash buying decks for the Blizzard card game, there's no incentive to put development effort into Diablo.
While I agree, I also don't understand why Blizzard doesn't do the same for Diablo. People go out of their way just to get a stupid ugly pet or portrait frame in Diablo; make an ugly kitten portrait frame or a little pig as pet and Blizzard would get a shit ton of money for basically close to no development time. It's well-known in the game development industry that micro transactions yield way more money than costs for games/expansions/DLCs, and Diablo offers a lot of potential micro payment options that would have no influence on gameplay at all (note that the only "pay 2 win" thing in Diablo China, the XP boost, is only available on non-season).
I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd empty his credit card if we could buy stash tabs - even if they'd be ridiculously expensive. And while I personally wouldn't pay a dime for it, I'm sure you could make money out of pumpkin (Halloween) or Santa Claus transmogs than from any half-assed expansion pack that would break balance and game design entirely and needs another year and five content patches of fixing.
This, so much this.
We have repeatedly let Blizz know that there are things we want in this game (wings, portrait frames, STASH SPACE) that we would pay real world money for and yet they continue to say "nope, lolz". I just do not get it.
I really enjoy D3 but if Blizz isn't going to take the game seriously for the future I may just finally make the transition to PoE even though I don't like it quite as much.
I'm going to laugh my ass of if all they do is walk on stage, announce that season 4 is ending in a few weeks and then go straight to questions from the audience.
D3 was announced at the worldwide invitational paris 2008and ROS was announced at Gamescom 2013 Cologne... I won't be surprised if future major announcements would also be held somewhere in Europe. I don't understand why people are so surprised and disappointed by the lack of D3 stuff at Blizzcon because it was exactly the same last year.
Blizzcon has always had a good year and a bad year. This year is one of those bad years because last year OW was announced. What, since when does Blizzard announce a new game at every single Blizzcon? That's just not how it goes. It's not trying to find any patterns, it's just facing reality. Expecting an expansion announcement at this year's Blizzcon is just wishful thinking of depressed D3 fans.
There seems to be a trend in the video game industry as of late to make announcements closer to the actual release date of said announced products. I'm not sure if it's really a thing but look at OW, FO4 and now even FC:P. Also, there were rumors about a new IP announcement at last years' Blizzcon for a long time before it actually happened so by no means was it expected to be a "bad" Blizzcon year but whatever dude - Blizzard just doesn't give a shit about D3 anymore and it's been like that for a while now (Look at last year's Blizzcon). An expansion is bullshit anyway... raise level cap to 80 so 100% of everything becomes useless and it will most likely introduce a trillion new balance problems when the already existing ones have not been resolved for months and years now. I don't see what's the problem with constant content patches and updates for a semi-dead game when taking other Blizzard games into consideration...
This game is already dead.
There is no point playing, and I will tell why:
1-90% of the base players, that started S4 are botting almost full time now. Even on hardcore, there is a LOT of bots. And no option to REPORT then, that fuck`s up the ladder system and Blizz do nothing (even bots like rosbot and demonbuddy doing injection on the game)
2-Paragon System is a joke - The more you play, the better you will be, even if you are a complety noob on the game. You learn how to play with the build in 5 minutes then you keep spamming the same thing for ages. This game has 0% player skill envolved.
3-For more active players, those ones who seek ladders positions, the game becomes even more pointless - If you dont have 16 free hours to play everyday, doing that "super fun" speed 65-70 in a infinite cycle, you will never be able to get a nice position on the ladder. Because paragons determines it almost automatically. And remeber, 90% of the player base is botting right now, so you will be playing alone almost every time.
4-Two classes clearly much better than others, so you will just see barbs and monks playing;
5-For high ranks GR, if you don`t open something like silver spire, act 1 spider screen or act 2 tombs, you can quit with 5% of the rift, because it will be impossible to complete it;
6-Density lag, that comes together with that ridiculous 2.3 patch even on PTR and Blizz do nothing to fix it;
7-No reason to roll DH and Wizz on this patch. Completely useless and no usable on a group;
8-Those damages are ridiculous. Why tha fuck a game must crit 100 billions of damage ? Bad, very bad game design, you can easily see that the game is some kind of frankestein.
9-Boring, nothing to do when you are solo and don`t have enough paragon to pass a 65+ grift solo. If you don`t have a group, go bot or don`t even polay at all.
Blizzard did an amazing job turning D3 1.0 around, from a terrible game to a mediocre/meh one, but that just doesn't cut it.
I'm not even being ironic, D3 1.0 was so bad, it took some good work/ideas to make it playable, but imho it's time to admit it's just not good enough, and start working on D4. Or whatever is coming next.

As someone that has played a ton of D3 since seasons started (played several hundred hours each and every season so far) I sadly have to agree with you. The game can be fun at times, and grinding is the nature of the Diablo franchise, so it's not so much the gameplay that's the turnoff, but I suppose it's more to do with how much better the game should have been, how much more depth and innovation could have taken place in D3. I know part of it must be nostalgia but I feel as though D2 gave me nearly endless enjoyment for several years, even now I have fond memories of D2 (and even D1) and it just doesn't really feel the same with D3. I mean I can't imagine four or five years down the road, thinking back and saying "wow D3 was such a great game, I'll never forget the fun I had playing it." It really just is, and has always been a very "meh" title and while I would rather there be an expansion than not, I can't help but think they'll just give us more of the same, without much innovation or anything truly amazing.
I do agree with you, I think Diablo 4 would be their best option at this point if they care about revitalizing the Diablo franchise. They definitely need to think outside the box with it though, if it's ends up boiling down to a reskinned version of D3 it's going to be a huge disappointment.
What Diablo needs is some fresh wind. about a year ago some creative community members had some really good ideas. Basically they introduced 2 more game modes, one being a kind of king-of-the-hill, much like the bounty in ruins of sescheron but a lot bigger and more entertaining. Another introduced a "protect the altar as long as you can" with multiple spawn points, coming online one by one the longer the event goes.
Unfortunately, from a company and legal standpoint, they'd likely have to give financial and creative credit to whomever had the idea. Since the idea was so widespread (because they were great ideas) they couldn't just take the idea and run with it without a potential legal backlash.
That's why it pains me to see these things hit the dfans front page. Because some asshole in their legal department has to say "Nope, could cause us to get sued." It's a sad state in today's world is in where everyone is so sue-happy that it impedes what game companies could do with their products. Not that this is the only reason, but it is likely a part of their decision making process.
With their move to micro-transactions, I don't see as long of shelf-lives of games as we have before. Expect to see 1-year games as we have with the CoD franchise, multi-year "expansions" to games like hearthstone, and expect Overwatch to be riddled with "Unlock this hero for 9.99!"
Old Blizzard was notorious for doing surprises and keeping shit under wraps to shock and awe the fan base. Blizzard doesn't do that shit nowadays. RIP Diablo 3. (semi srs)
I think there has been an image floating around since 2013/2014 with an estimated DIablo 3 Expansion for 2016, however, I'm not sure on how likely they are to stay on that path.
Just because this is kind of a bitch-about-D3 thread, I'll throw in my real complaint; It's WAY too easy to get gear now. Gambling alone was ridiculous, but now we can traget legendaries w/ cube.
I really wish it was just mob drops without gambling or cube for items. It takes my buddy and I like 5 hours to get to 70 for the start of the season, and WITHIN 3 hours we have our set. That just blows my mind. Oh, and god forbid you take a break in season for a week, because you'll be so far behind in paragon it doesn't matter.
Pretty much, we need a cap on paragon for actual power, and have the levels continue for GF or something. And Gambling and cube should be redone for how easy it is to acquire items. But that's me.
Honestly I'd be happy if Blizzard even released a DLC of sorts instead of a full expansion. Add in a DLC with Skovos Isles, new quests, new bounties, new rift tiles, maybe a new game mode like king of the hill or something and I think a lot of players would be happy. What I hope for in 2.4 is more than anything a big bug fix/balance patch to bring all the classes on par. I know for 2.4 Area Damage is 1 thing they are planning to fix as right now a lot of skills don't work properly with it ie crusaders hammers aren't having the 6x set bonus calculated into the area damage so there is a lot of damage lost there.
I was hopeful for an expansion at blizzcon on but after seeing the schedule, it's just not going to happen. There's only one d3 Dev panel and no room for an unlisted announcement anywhere.

A schedule that was pretty quickly taken down.
A schedule missing several "panels" that are already announced.
Its not rocket science, that was a clearly not the final schedule. Stop using it to come to bullshit conclusions.
It certainly looks like they will be showing us the new things for 2.4. Maybe they'll go for announcing an expansion during the next Gamescom? I do hope so!
im crying the washrooms are bigger than the d3 area at blizzcon any seen the map? =[ sad sad i guess blizzard really dont care about diablo franchise anymore sigh gg guys im a sad panda they kill my beloved game diablo!
This is pathetic, Blizzard made a black sheep from a gold fish.
It's probably because Hearthstone, Heroes of the Storm and Overwatch are going to give them a lot more money.
The people who moaned and complained until the AH went tits up are the ones to blame for the lack of development in D3. The AH was a good source of revenue, now the game just sucks money and doesn't generate a thing for Blizzard- why would they allocate resource to it?
