How are the GR leaders getting their gem ranks so high, much higher than their highest competed GR?
I thought the gem upgrade NPC only shows up IF you compete a GR in time?
Also, the upgrade chance goes down quickly, from 100% chance at a GR +10 lvls higher than the gem being upgraded, to 0% chance for a GR -7 lvls from the gem being upgraded?
I saw a (very) recent monk video that showed a BoT gem @ Rank 86, but the highest GR complete for that monk was GR72 (solo).
You can upgrade gems up to 15 levels higher than the rift you cleared. Check the gem calculator for the exact chance.
Note that the chance is 1% from 5-15 levels above your rift; so basically those guys ran high GRs in group to get the gems to mid-70 (top groups cleared already GR80+). Then they speed run GR65-70 for 1% upgrade chance, always exactly 15 levels below their highest gem; so for example if you have a rank 86 gem, you want to run GR71 speed rifts to have a 1% chance for an upgrade to rank 87. That means they run a ridiculous amount of rifts - but you need to do that anyways for XP.
The highest gems at the end of last season were 92 I believe, and this season I'm sure we'll see rank 100 gems later on.
Lol, the other day I was watching Natsuma_Z, and he was trying to do a 30% gem upgrade, ha had 20 fails in a row - he said himself he gets more 1% upgrades than that unlucky streak.
BTW, chance for 20 consecutive 30% chance to upgrade failing is really really low.
Correct me if I'm wrong but statistically that's an average of 1500 level 71 grifts to level that gem 15 levels. I wonder how many he had to do =)
No, because they clear up to GR80 successfully in time, which gives them 60% upgrades up to a 81 gem (the highest GR level cleared right now is 82 if I'm not mistaken), and you most likely want to do a few more to get at least the 30%, maybe even the 15% upgrade. Only then you start pushing the gem with 1% upgrades... and that's not that far from 86 anymore. And as someone said, you get 3 upgrade chances per rift, so on average every 33 rifts you should have a realistic shot at a 1%. And the top groups run hundreds of speed GRs per evening... so for usual people 1% upgrades are crazy, but for the top players it's a regular thing.
Here's someone with a rank 93 Bane of the Trapped (highest rift cleared: 82).
There is a chance to upgrade 0% and to fail at 100%... This is very rare ofc. The problem is that those values are never 0 and 100 but very close to them. This is why few players failed to upgrade gem at 100%.
I'd like to see a source for that. I have upgraded close to 50 gems to rank 50 or higher on non-season in S1/S2/S3 (I need a goal in GRs, so upgrading the 7th backup Bane of the Trapped helps me get through it). That's a sample size of about 2500 on 100% upgrades. I have never failed a 100%, i have never heard of anyone of my friends, clan mates, or streamers fail a 100%. And if 0% upgrades were possible we'd see 100+ ranks on Asia already.
I'm 99% confident to say your claim is wrong, not sure where you got that from.
Edit: Did some research. I found two (2!) bug reports about this happening, no bluepost/answer/confirmation, no proof. I remember instances of people reporting 100% fails and it turned out to be a reading comprehension issue (they thought that a GR35 is supposed to give them a 100% upgrade chance on their rank 35 gem for some reason). Those two bugs remain isolated incidents and might just have been bugs, like sometimes Death's Breath not dropping or so. Gem upgrade chances, for all we know, are fixed numbers and not "rounded", 100% means 100% and 0% means 0%.

Hmm, I never heard of a fail at 100%, but I have had 3 fails in a row at 90% though.
Lol... yeah, the forum software can't handle Korean signs in the URL Anyways, he took the gem off, but there are plenty of 90+ gems on all the people that cleared GR80+, in fact, there were already lots of DHs last era with 90+ gems.

What am I missing here?
Thanks
You can get higher in a group.
they clear a billion mid-high 60s in 4 man group in a few minutes per rift and take the 1% upgrade chance after the guardian.

Any scource about that 0% upgrade?
wow this went on for a long time even though i answered it immediately
But you said 1%, this is about 0% upgrade.
Well, it said upgrade failed, but in the end his gem went from lvl 0 to lvl 3 after the upgrades - so it was a visual bug only, still strange.

I had a run the other day... failed 9 70% upgrade chances in a row. I just stopped running Grifts for the day after that
