Well from the datamined info so far, the cube can..
Break down legendaries and store their passives
Upgrade normal legendaries to ancients
Upgrade rares
Convert set items
Remove level requirements
Convert crafting mats
Open portals (Cow, Pony, Greed)
Convert gems
Level item up to character's level (future patch)
So it really is superior to the HC in every damn way. Hell, the storing of legendary passives alone would make it better than the HC. Forget wearing rose tinted glasses, the ingrates here seem to have rose tinted eyes.

The more information that comes out, the more it seems as though this Cube could indeed challenge the Horadric Cube, in terms of overall power.
However, about my comments thus far. There is no ill-will or vitriol on my part. Think of it no different than you would hearing an opinion you disagree with from a friend sitting opposite you on a couch. To that end, calling me an "ingrate" (if indeed that was aimed partially toward me) is not entirely called for.
I hold them to task, many of us do, and I would think the throngs of people reminding Blizzard that Diablo 3 must have more elements of it's predecessor, could be partially responsible as to why we're finally starting to see such things come to bear.
The devs (Blue post) directly compared a new D3 item to a vaunted D2 item, and in doing so, many of us will hold them to task for saying such a thing if they do not follow through.
I do not speak for the OP, but I would imagine his opinion would echo mine, as would most of you. There is simply nothing in the world of gaming I want more than for Diablo 3 to surpass Diablo 2 in every way. This Cube, it is a huge striding gate toward that end.
I really just cannot even believe the approach people have taken with this. Ok, so its named 'kanai' as a tribute to a diablo 3 artist... what does that have to do with writing it into the lore that it is a better version of the horadric cube? Why not say its the kanai forge, or emporium or litterally any other object... why not even kanais' horadric cube? There is litterally NO other reason to write the lore that way other than to specifically highlight that this cube is better. Further, as I said this is not the first instance of this 1up attitude. Why people here want to make extremely poor excuses for why this is impossible is beyond me. Don't get me wrong, it could be that they didn't mean for it to be that way but it is very much within the realm of possibility and it is poorly framed at the very least.
They have to "1-up" the past. It is software. All software should advance from the previous versions. Video games are no different. It is a great thing that Blizz istaking D3 ahead of D2, instead of copying and pasting previous features because they were considered fun at the time.
Don't get me wrong. Horadric Cube use was a lot of fun. If D3's team has found a way of fixing game issues by creating a "superior" version of the Horadric Cube, then good. Software moves forward.
Myself and other gamers on here, youtube have said for a while there should more d2 element in d3...Yet alot of people were like you noob, its not diablo 2...go install it...people still play it. I think a few mentioned charms also...(which the cube is in a way)...Yet when it actually happens everyone's back on the bandwagon again. I could find the post, but I'm lazy...I dont get why people are so upset about a name either or what items have which power....who cares? Just play the game and enjoy it, have some laughs in chat, troll a bit, help people etc....I'm off to go see ted2. Hope to see you all in game later tonight or tomorrow in ptr *fingers crossed*
It for one don't matter what they try and implement someone will cry and belly ache about it, and for two D2 as you keep relating to was a lets use a mod to see how powerful we can make our characters so we can dominate arena's, that is the main reason D3 has no offline mode or no pvp so it stops all the people from you can call it what you like i call it cheating, so stop trying to make D3 into D2 because i for one am glad it's not, with a character you made via a program what fun would it be to play a game you couldn't die or god mode no fun at all, the devs are doing a great job and its a great game, if you didn't think it was so great you wouldn't put thousands of hours into it so paly it or go play something else, would you like some cheese with that whine
Dude, I don't even know why you guys reply to Rope. All he does is complains and complains and complains about this game. He is even worse on the d3 forums. I see why they capchta you. I wouldn't want you on my forums either. Like serious? You guys are complaining about how they worded something?
Seriously why do you even play this game?
It's a conversation, not a fight. The issue is your perception of things, not my attitude. Many of my comments are tongue in cheek, not super serious, furious anger. Your inability to perceive this, is your problem, not mine.
Opinions tend to evolve over time, and yes, I thought it was a little limp to make a Cube and proclaim it as trumping the Horadric Cube. As information leaked out a bit at a time, I began to embrace their decision and am now far more comfortable with the comparisons they've drawn.
Try to relax a bit there fella. I've been here for years, and I find it a bit rude for you to just stumble in here dragging beefs from one forum to another. We're all on the same team, if you care to indulge in viewing the big picture.
I do a lot to help people and answer questions when I can. As well, I often speak very highly of this game. It has evolved into a terrific ARPG, and history will likely regard it far more kindly than many people do now.
Really WGAF anyway...It's good that they named it that way...
As long as it salvages useless legs, and changes my mats over, I could care less what it's called...
As for "superior" I don't care either, It's just a ploy for more hype for the next patch to get more players/and for what's to come...(expansion)
Rhykker did a video on why he thinks there's a expansion in the near future, and his patch commentary was pretty hilarious.

I guess people will complain about anything when it comes to d3.
