I have played all 6 classes when ROS came out. all 6 of them until they hit the first gear barrier.
then I go back to my main class barbarian, grind the hell out of it. didn't work out well (before Raekor and after WW nerf)
after that, for a few patches, DH is just too powerful to not try (still is, and I think most powerful and OP), not hating any class, enjoy most of the time.
and finally, my third class, which I think have the most possibility to diversify, witch doctor, and I main a witch doctor about a month now.
here is what I've learned, and if that's what you think, we may give blizzard some constructive advice.
Barbarian, smooth growth curve (in terms of power), so much defensive skills, no problem surviving GR 40 or below, could have a few builds without mandatory gears, different WW tweaks, Raekor, seismic slam for fun, and even throwing barb for a few patches.
DH, after M6 came out, just crazy powerful, I throw like couple hundred hours into my barb, and my DH catches up within a month and go beyond that.
than patch 2.2.0 arrive, Nat 6 is fun, but Unhallowed Essence is just take us from godly to untouchable. those chakram just slice through things at high GR 42+ like butter. I think the biggest OP thing is SS, DH could focus on maxing out damage then slap SS into your build, with a bit mouse skill, you are ready to ripping through GR 42. and you don't need any special weapon. not to mention DH have the smallest loot table to get their gears, quivers & bows & crossbows. the best thing is, your build, will be about to speed farm T6 & viable in high GR, all you need is that 1 build.
Witch doctor, fun to play with, many pet builds, jade builds, witch doctor have 2 main problems, pet doesn't AOE, so it is bad for speed farming. Many Witch doctor builds, require you to have certain weapon to make them viable, SMK, Rhen'ho, DoD, which you might never get 1 in your life, people spend 600+ hours without seeing a single SMK. the loot pool of weapons for witch doctor is just ridiculous : staff, sword, dagger, spear, knives, blahblahblah, you name it, witch doctor has it. this problem is holding back witch doctor ability to diversify. and together with slow farming, the growth curve is just wayyyyyyyyyyy behind barbarian and DH. maybe, if I am really really luck, spending 800 hours would catch up with my barbarian.
Wiz, not really suit my play style, stand there and spam magic, tried electrocute build, frost orb, ice beam, didn't workout very well, the thing is, Wiz doesn't have damage output like DH, couldn't survive like barbarians. growth curve, not sure, but I suppose is somewhat like Witch doctor which is slower than barbarian.
Monk, I like monk for a few patches, which is before they nerf wave of light, I have played wave of light spamming build, cookie cutter build, palm build.
I think monk curve is better than Wiz, and have potential even better than Witch doctor. you have powerful survival skill serenity, Epiphany. for offensive skill, have dashing strike, wave of light, SSS, palm, etc. fun class.
Sader, just sad (before roland set arrive), suffer from same problem like witch doctor, you need mandatory weapon to unlock builds, BoP, G.Foote, etc. they nerf BoP, and even worse, you need another mandatory gear to unlock builds, your shield. and a big problem, blocking is doing nothing in Diablo 3, you could still get 1 shot with a shield, and for a offhand, shield is way less powerful than mojo, quiver and orbs. and you have to figure a way to control a lot of CD skills, and wrath generation is one of the most difficult resource to manage versus hatred, fury, mana, etc. maybe sader is doing better in this patch 2.2.0. I would say crusader has the worst growth curve in diablo 3.
I hope blizzard could somehow figure out a way to balance this, like Kadala with class specific weapon to gamble, which IMHO will have witch doctor and crusader to catch up with barbarian, let them enjoy their build diversity. or maybe they have better solution, just hoping.
Have You tried 2.2 wiz? We push as high as DHs in GRs... The difference is that DH's one/two shot enemies in GRs with a click, whereas wizards have to wait 1.5 seconds to the arriving of meteors.
And gearing a DH or a wiz is the same; 6pc bonuses, 3 legendary gems, the rest are upgrades which You find while playing; and a decent Kridershot (dhs) or an ancient Serpent Sparker (wiz)...
I do agree with You about WD's. I have mained WD's since ROS came out, after HOURS of not founding a F**KING SMK, I changed to Wiz in S2 (still Firebird) ---> Here I found a SMK before having Firebird 6PC (REAL).
But, I think the struggle is here: To succed in really high levels You need:
- High AOE Damage
- CC
- Distance from mobs or REALLY HIGH CC to stand near them without being touched many times
- F**k toughness, One hit and You are dead. So no hits.
- Good resource independence (good regeneration if You have to spend it).
- Good gear ofc.
Considering those things:
- DH covers it all.
- Wizards now cover it all with Tal Rasha.
- Barbs cover it all with 6WW & 4IK
- Not sure about Monks' style but I see them pushing higher so I guess they cover it.
- WDs lack of AOE Damage as You said.
- Saders lack of Resource independence AND distance from mobs (fixed with Phalanxs but not as reliable as other classes' builds).

So this is my opinion, hug.
really insightful, and neat conclusion. I am going to try Wiz, don't want to miss out one of the best class ^^.
off topic, that 1.5 sec delay will give you trouble facing reflect damage, is that right?

Mmhh, based in my experience, worst enemies are:
- range-attack enemies (archers, exorcists, Lacunis stalker (DAMN I HATE THEM), etc).
- Reflex, thunderstorm, vortex elites.
To avoid damage from those mobs I strongly reccomend you to move so they don't hit you, you CAN'T resist them (3 arrows = dead; 1 anarch = dead). For example, move aside when You see an Anarch "charging" its dash, same with Corrupted Angels, Lacunis that throw bombs, etc. Then when they land, kill them.
Fancing elites, be careful with Reflex (wait those 3-5 secs), avoid Thunderstorm (first hit is certain, then move out of that zone), and always, but always, fight the furthest you can (superlative of "far", idk if i put it good, english is not my native language, sorry about that). A high distance from the mobs gives you more power (zei's), more time to avoid attacks AND vortex doesn't affect you if You are quite far from the elite.
Why vortex is dangerous? You receive damage when pulled back, and elites may hit you really fast when You land, not giving you enugh time to move out (worst if they have electrified/molten/ground effects that damage you).
