Hello everyone I need some help picking a melee class for season 3.
i was thinking of maybe a WW barb or a crusader, but I have been reading the crusaders are still not very good. I'm just not really sure of the state of the melee classes going into season 3. If anyone has any helpful knowledge that would help out a lot.
The best pick would be the one that looks fun, it is a game, you have to enjoy it.
From the "still not very good", it looks like you want to be the DPS class in party, and be efficient.
Since so much did change (all vanilla sets got reworked, good amount of renewed legendaries, 3 new sets), it is hard to say what the best build will be, as it takes time to find the best setup, let alone things like breakpoints and the most optimal one.
My personal bet would be to go for 1 of the classes with a new set. Blizzard added them for a reason, if they perform bad, that's kinda a fail.
Then you can try to min-max the bet. DH is solid for a few patches now, in every group (ranking and xp runs), so if all fails, you have a good fallback, and the new set looks stronger. Wizard recently got "in the news" (avoid doing high grift in group on live server), again a possible fallback. Tal rasha seems to have great damage output, new set does not look bad, and can offer a lot of support (with nerfs to WD healthglobe spawn, a new king might come). Barbarian is only being used for speed xp runs currently, not for rankings (in groups). Both the IK and WW set seem to do very high damage, but it is mainly "hit and run", where greater rifts (again, currently) require you to work as a team. Then it will come down what the new group setup will be (no problem is 4 barbs) and if the damage will be high enough for that hit and run approach (played WD last patch, it was a hell if someone triggered elites before i could control them, did not want barbs in my groups for this). Also, as blizzard brings back the WW barb, I expect a lot of people will play this (like monks S2). If they are good enough for high grifts, you will probably have to compete with a lot of people for a spot.
Looking at this, I personally will probably "main" wizard (both damage and support possibilities), but I will give the barb a spin
PS: as I said in my first line, look for what you would enjoy the most.
I can see the new Wizard set being a new char for high lvl group grifting, GoodIdeaGaming was streaming some PTR with the new wiz set hitting 3-4bil crits practically every single arcane orb cast
The Crusader will still be one of the fastest and most effective classes for T6 clearing with the condemned build. I played it in S1 and although it's quick and efficient it's real boring in the long run. The crusader doesn't really have a lot of build options either and neither of them feel very meelee-ish except for maybe the new rolands set (which sucks in my opinion). The raekor barb is also a very good build for T6 and I had a lot of fun with it in S2. Thenew WW barb does indeed look like it's going to be a strong build, but doesn't have the mobility of the furious charge raekor variant. The new raiment monk set offers both a lot of mobility and a fast T6 speed, but is somewhat nauseating to play. The "old" SWK/bell build is a viable option for both T6 and grifts though.
All in all theres so many different builds with different purposes ready for S3 so your choise depends on what/how you want to play. Solo or party? T6 or GR-pushing or both? Speed and efficiency, or fun & casual? In any event, I would recommend one of the three classes that get new sets with patch 2.2 (barb/dh/wiz) as they have more variety and buld options, especially for T6.
I played a DH for the last 2 seasons and really didn't care for them. I really what something more challenging I group with a really good wizard so I don't really want a wizard even though I see him always doing amazing damage. Lol
