was the D2 closed battle net overrun with hacks and dupes? I only ever played offline on a LAN but remember them selling the closed battle net to players in the wake of Diablo 1 fireballs up your ass while you are shopping at Griswolds.....
did the server side "closed" battle net become overrun with dupes and cheating? I'm curious
If they started offline tomorrow, the integrity of the game would fail, tomorrow. Tomorrow there would be a collapse.
And if anyone disagrees with this assertion by ruksak, then I direct you to the numerous threads from console players, where there is a play mode that allows offline storage of characters, and it has caused massive damage to the integrity of the game. e.g. people joining random games and instantly gaining 100 paragon levels because the game host is using edited items.

Yes, dont ask me how though.
Somehow items that were taken from offline mode and edited to have insane stats managed to creep into closed battlenet, where they were duped like crazy and sold like hot cakes. The duping was rampant anyway, there were so many high runes in circulation. People kept buying them even though they knew that they will go "poof" in the next server cleanup.
Personally, I dont know how much better that Blizzard could make their code. It's been 10 years since D2 and that version of Battlenet. I am sure they have learned a lot. But I dont know if that's enugh.
The comment in question from the Tavern Talk was only meant to indicate that a subscription MMORPG is a vastly different genre than a non-sub ARPG. The expectations from the players should reflect this difference, but we're seeing a lot of folks seemingly expertly adept at crafting a mountain from a mere molehill.
Realistic expectations were never really a strengh of the Blizzard playerbase ^^
Just like the inferno diffifulty at release and the MP10 and T6 setting in later versions were never intended to be where the majority of the people will be playing. But as soon as they were released, most people expected to be able to faceroll it.
you guys are stupid lol just switch to POE updates every week
I know you're trolling at this point, but I'll bite 'cause I'm honestly sick to death of hearing about the comparison of D3 to PoE and vice versa. In the end they're extremely different games on different ends of the action RPG game spectrum that truly can't be compared outside of the gameplay being similar - like all action RPGs.
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love both games to death and easily have hundreds of hours in both of them. But they can't be compared because they're designed for different styles of gameplay. D3 is the perfect game for the average gamer to login and play a few nights a week without having to concern themselves with much else. PoE provides a much more hardcore gamer atmosphere for those who crave it and has more longevity due to the design (not necessarily good design, mind you). Two very different games that can't be honestly compared when you look at it logically.

Never played closed Bnet, I have no idea.
Oh my yes it was! "Closed Bnet" and Open Battle.net were flooded with dupes and cheating. Open, it was okay, because it was like the wild west. An attempt to get all the cheaters on a different server.
It didn't work so well.
Closed Battle.net was a nightmare of jerks and duped items. Everybody could trade easily for high-end runes, shakos, SOJ's, whatever you want! Everybody had to password their single player only/just me and my friends games because of all the jerks trying to scam you, send spam, one shot you in a "duel". The economy meant nothing, players did not socialize like they do today. If you wanted to trade you took a big risk somebody would trick you with hacks or software or whatever. Blizz instituted the economy reset to keep a lid on all the duping. People still dupe whatever they want to this day.
many people want to compare apples and oranges as far as how D2 was and what D3 can be. like comparing a old car to a new one. technology has changed exponentially since then. there are many examples of games that run online and offline very well. both offline and online modes can be done if executed properly and the solid proof is all over the internet right now. blizzard has just shown they arent capable of managing their software like other companies can.
...like I said, an offline patch will come when Blizzard doesnt want o keep supporting D3 like they do today. Prolly about the time D4 comes out.
The truth is that there are far more pirates than interested PC gamers without a reliable internet connection. You see they took the exact opposite tack on the consoles because, in their words, most of them aren't connected.
Anything about "sanctity of online" is bull at this point. Hackers can mine the console version if they wanted to find exploits, most would transfer over with a little tweaking.

Bugs and exploits in the PC and Console versions would not carry over. They are fundamentally different pieces of software. One is designed to run on Windows XP-8/Mac OS 10.7(I think)-10.10, the other, is meant to be run on either Playstation or Xbox operating systems. I will admit, some bugs will carry over in certain circumstances. But most bugs are going to be unique to the platform. That's the way it is.

Keep polishing a turd, its still a turd.
Also. why are you lurking on a diablo forum if you are a blatant PoE fanboy ?
