Blood shards are an additional currency in the game, and that’s what it makes them interesting. At the moment, they are (unfortunately) only used for gambling and buying horadric caches. Why couldn't we expand their utility?
1. Buying current crafting materials
Considering the fact that they will (probably) be BoA, the only way to get them at the moment is... right, farming. But with the addition of enchanting, which will become a big part in RoS, crafting materials are more interesting and important for the development of characters. Regularly enchanting items implies the need of large amounts of materials, and sometimes you may have a lack.
It would allow you to gain time punctually (time which was invested in farming and rewarded with these shards) by buying exactly what you miss:
Small or large bundle packs for common, magic and rare materials (with variable amount of content and composition of packs, depending on your level)
Single legendary materials for a fixed amount of shards.
Of course, the price should be adapted consequently to be sure that it doesn’t take the thrill of buying caches or farming to get these materials on the classic way. For example, if I need a single Forgotten Soul:
am I ready to pay directly the price (1500 shards)?
will I take the risk trying to get it cheaper and buy a cache (100 shards)?
will I farm until I get a useless legendary I can disenchant, which may take hours?

Moreover, we could make the price of all items which can be bought with blood shard variable, with changing prices in a certain fixed range once a day or week. Example:
Such a variable price system would add that certain something to make the whole thing an interesting feature (because everyone feels happy after snatching on an offer )
2. Buying new crafting materials used for upgrading nephalem rifts
In another aspect, it could be used is as a currency for repairing items. In addition to classic gold costs for repairing items, blood shards may be needed for the reparation of legendaries and set items.
4. Change blood shards for gold and vice-versa
Both are currencies, and currencies can be changed at a certain ratio. So changing one for the other should be an available feature. However, some rules should be fixed:
At start, both ratios Shard->Gold and Gold->Shard are fixed. Not necessarily the same, for example 15k gold -> 1 shard, 1 shard -> 10k gold.
Buying/selling larger amounts should give better ratios than buying/selling 1 shard.
After buying or selling, the corresponding ratio gets worse
1st time: 150k gold -> 1 shard, 2nd time 153k -> 1 shard, after x times: 6m gold -> 1 shard
1st time: 1 shard -> 100k gold, 2nd time 1 shard -> 97.5k gold, x times (lowest rate): 1 shard -> 1k gold
Conclusion
These are some ideas I see which can improve the experience with blood shards. Also I think it should only act as a currency and not as a crafting material, since there are already a lot of them in the current beta version.
Overall, if we consider all possibilities (these and others) of using blood shards in the game, it would be an interesting aspect of the game, since it would give a certain degree of shard management to the player (a small buffer of shards are required to keep your char running, the larger possibilities of use… ) which I think may be something new and refreshing for the game.
I would be pleased to hear your comments and feedback
