I've been sniping items for months but for the past few days I'm not able to find any decent deals by sniping the item. I normally snipe 1-2 items each day but for the past 10-15 items the price rises close to the 'buy it now' price so basically there is no deal to be had. My guess is because since there are so many more users since the patch release more people are bidding on items. Anybody else run into this?
They come in bursts and also, as the game goes on longer and if players are sticking around, most will gradually understand the general prices in the market.
I personally don't even bother with items under 100M. Mid-tier items are usually accurately priced.

My problem is I don't have enough money to buy a lot of 100m+ items to sell and when I start to accumulate a lot of money I spend it, haha. I recently saved up almost 600m but spent 1/2 on it on gear. It takes disiplane to save up over 1b gold. You defintely need money to make money in this game.

Or you just need time and luck and play the game (rather than playing the AH). Just sayin' ;-)
For me - as someone who doesn't like sniping because I don't like to spend hours on the AH - this thread is really informative, because it shows me I can make more spontaneous purchases and don't need to wait for a good deal for days. More in-game time, yay.
With the new patch I have a renewed interest in playing the game again so no, I'm not just camping out on the ah, haha. Currently BIN prices are competitive with bidding wars, I actually picked some of my items that way since the price actually came out to be cheaper than what's being bid on.
In regards to people starting a bidding war early, it maybe because people put the price they are willing to pay and not worry about the few minutes of the auction causing the price of the item to shoot up. Usually there is a reason why an item shoots up in price...something about it makes it better than the others.

Actually, it's called "auction fever," which is a legitimate term in the auction world. Some people just get so into winning an item, they don't care how much they pay. They just want to beat out the competition. Snipers with auction fever are the absolute worst, for the sake of their own "finances" as well as other people who are trying to win items.
But then if they win through overpowering others financially, most often they'll suffer from "buyer's remorse" after they cool off. Which is why many people stick to proxy bidding "20 hours before" the auction ends to avoid overpaying as well as getting inflicted with auction fever.
...Oh, I remember this time I saw an absolutely awesome Vile Ward a few months ago. It started off with like a 100M bid, but I knew it was worth around 750M to 1 billion at most. So I put in 1.25 billion as my proxy bid when it had about 12 hours remaining just to be safe.
I woke up in the morning about half an hour before the auction ended and kept watch just for fun before I had to leave for work. With 10 minutes remaining, it was at 500M, which I expected. At five minutes, it was at 700M. At 2 minutes, it was at 900M. Now I started getting a little concerned.
I ended up paying around 1.2 billion because someone (some people) kept bidding at the last few seconds. Sigh.
There is definetely auction fever going on because a lot of items I'm seeing are above BIN prices. The market is different now after the patch. Before I could snag 3-5 items a day and now I'll be lucky if I get 1 a day by sniping but BIN prices are dropping fast.
Buying an underpriced item just seconds after the auction becomes visible is called AH flipping (if the intent is to re-sell it) or making a good deal (if you wear it). It's not auction sniping, unless you want to redefine the word.

No, it also applies for items that are just put up. It's called BIN sniping. Not sure if I put the term "BIN sniping" in my little dictionary, but I did include sniping in general.
