I just picked up the Diablo III gaming headset today, thought I'd give a quick review.
Cost me $119 CAN at NCIX. This is my first real gaming headset, I used a cheap logitech headset before this.
The Physical: The headset is real lightwieght, forms nicely around my ears, and looks fantastic. It's built with pretty high quality. I won't go into the specifics here as you can just read them off the offical webpage. The cool red lights that shine from the set can be programmed to do various different patterns.
The Audio: Since this is my first real gaming headset, I don't have much to compare to, but I will say for the price range, the audio is amazing. I played Age of Conan for a few hours, and I was so immersed in the game, This was due to the high quality sounds, and the ability to block out outside noise and insulate your ears in pure gameworld awesomness.
I tested the mic playing call of duty on my PS3 and it worked great. Now I should mention, everywhere I read online said "this mic won't work with ps3/xbox360" but I tried it anyway, and low and behold, it worked like a charm, just plug and play. There was an issue though on the ps3, where it seemed the headset would lose connection for a minute or two and then randomly come back, it could have just been the game i was in, or that i havent installed the lastest firmware, but considering its not suppose to work at all with ps3, I cant really count this as a negative.
anyways im impressed and happy with this thing, Can't wait to use it playing D3!
Oh no...... for that amount of cash, you shoulda gotten the HIGHLY recommended Audio Techinica AD700's. For any type of gaming, they're great AND comfortable.
The Diablo cans are just a novelty, I'm afraid you paid for the branding and badging. Most 'gaming' headsets are. If you feel cool having them, or like how they look, then great - aesthetics are important to some people.
I'm an audiophile and can fully appreciate a $300+ pair of earbuds (I never pay full price though). It's an expensive hobby, and I envy people that don't or can't hear the difference. I myself can't bring myself experience anything with low fidelity. I don't allow my eyes to watch anything unless it's at least in 720p. If I come off as an audio/video snob, It's cause I am.
Even though I have a nice steady pay check, I'm still cautious about how I spend my money. I do TONS of research for even a $30 purchase.
Now, about those AD700's, they ARE great for gaming, and wearing them is like...... putting a nice white cloud on your head. They are WONDERFUL for music as well, just a bit weak if you listen to music with a lot of bass.

I bought the Sennheiser HD 350 series. Amazing headphones. Got them refurbed for 150 I think. My last pair of Sennheisers lasted me 6 years with stellar audio.

Great choice. I think Sennheisers are ugly as shit, but who's really having a fashion show sitting in front of your PC, right? I believe you can grab the 500series for under $100 now in some places.

I use Logitech G930 wireless headset. Amazing quality and wireless is nice when I'm walking around my house talking to people on Ventrilo still (there are a few macro buttons on the side of the headset). I love my headset, it has great audio, and great convenience, that's all I want in a headset.
If I ever got a new headset I would probably get the SteelSeries FNatic edition because it just looks amazing...
Thanks for sharing your experience with the Diablo 3 headset. I'm sure being made by SteelSeries, it's a great product for gaming.

The main problem with this suggestion is that those AD700's are open as opposed to diablo gaming set, where you even have some active noise cancelling, as far as I know. Therefore it is an unfair comparison - e.g. comfort can be much better on an open headphones where these can just lightly sit around your ears - where closed need to be pressed at least a bit to cancel outside noise.
As for diablo headset, I believe they can be great for gaming, not so much for music - so it is up to your taste whether that is important or not. I am extremely happy with my AKG K601's, which are the opposite - they don't possess the booming quality of overbassed gaming headsets, however for listening to the music they are really great.
I understand your point, but I don't think it's an unfair comparison at all. I'm talking more about the value of each headset, and under the assumption that most of us use our headsets/headphones for more than just gaming. Both headphones are in the same price range, so I saw it as a very fair comparison.
You must be referring to PASSIVE noise cancelling, active is the type that we snobs abhor. I KNOW that you can get a similar, no, SAME performing headset for MUCH less. I'm referring to the Steelseries Siberia V2, which the headset is based on, you can pick one of those up for $40USD. So, the extra cash is spent on plastic and lights (novelty). So, I'd like to change my view, that it ISN'T a fair comparison I suppose. It's like comparing a BMW to a Civic with a huge table on the trunk.
I've worked in retail, and have seen the 'at cost' of our headphones, they were always marked up 100%. eg I could buy $100 Shures for $50 with my discount. So, I'm more weary when it comes to these kinds of purchases.
EDIT: I suppose I should back up my argument with proof, yes?
Yeah, you get better immersion with closed headphones and sometimes get better bass as well. But, it's usually a trade-off as open headphones offer higher fidelity. It sounds more natural instead of contained and......boxy?

These headphones are SO open, it feels like you're not wearing anything. Sound passes right through.
