I am going to make it very clear to everyone how deceptive Blizzard really is to its fans. Over the last 6 years, in the World of Warcraft the social development has massively improved upon when the knowledge and technology was present. If anyone recalls while D2 was being developed, they wanted to try to create guilds and guild banks. Unfortunately, it was excluded on release because they never had the technology to do it at the given time. The idea was later used in WoW which became the core social structure. With the release of Starcraft 2, battle.net 2.0 arrived promising a brighter future for online gaming then its previous version, but the only thing that really came out of it was Real I.D and everything in Starcraft 2 were very basic.
Does it not strike you as odd that none of these systems were implemented or inspired new systems for Starcraft 2 or Diablo 3?
In both Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3, it’s the exact opposite of WoW, they deter you from interacting with others. Immediately when you log into World of Warcraft it gives you a greetings in the chat box and you see the guild message of the day. Without any effort, you have a chat box which automatically joins to specific channels setup, but in D3 and SC2 you do not even have a chat box. Yes, you have a friends list and there are basic channels but there is no legitimate way to interact will multiple people conveniently and feel like you are part of a certain group. Instead, you are left with terrible chats and this massive friends list that is really unnecessary.
What does World of Warcraft have to do with this?
Well, this is by far their best source of generating consistent monehhhh, in a game which is completely based around a community. So, restricting social interaction as much as possible on other Blizzard titles without becoming too obvious will naturally make people with World of Warcraft, continue playing it without another one of Blizzard’s games ultimately stealing a player which results in less money.
What does B.Net 2.0 offer?
Well, the only thing is Real I.D. That’s it. I call it the WoW leash, because that’s what it is. It allows guildies / friends in WoW to call you back over. It’s very convenient since SC2 and Diablo 3 are not time consuming and for the most part can almost be left instantly with no negative repercussions.
In the end it’s always about money, and World of Warcraft is a cash cow. They do not want their other games to become cannibals, taking away monthly subscriptions from WoW. Thus, excluding as much interaction as possible to make WoW players unconsciously migrate back to it. Every player suffers from this, including players that do not play World of Warcraft. This is the beast that Blizzard has become, and very deceptive at that. Social structure in any game will make you play it longer, players bonding which create communities and communities keep games going. Why is it that external sources such as websites and forums are used when we have technology available to do this in game.
Good read, has some things I hadn't thought about. I mean, yeah, Bnet 2.0 is bug-free and smooth, but beyond that it's been missing in the social department (and no one really could have predicted it X amount of years ago... only Blizz could have).
I don't *really* believe that it's all about the WoW cash-cow. D3 can be a huge cash-cow with RMAH if Zynga is any sign of in-game purchases. But the drive for people to keep playing for years is both content and community.
To me it sort of seems like Blizz tried the hardest and did the best (bnet-wise) up to and including WoW. Now they are just coasting, and not pushing the envelope? I've loved all of their games including SC2 and D3, but as you guys know from my chat mockups, bnet leaves a bit to be desired.
Another perspective about Blizz's social networking/interactive: You guys know about Titan right? That's it's gonna be a completely new MMO, build from the ground up. There are rumours that Titan is going to have very big social aspect to it. Meaning you'll interact with people in the game itself without "playing" the game. If you want to read in more detail: Titanfocus and Daeity.blogspot (Daeity's are very speculative with "insider info" but it's a real good read).
[tinfoil hat on] (even though this makes sence): Blizz is "preparing" us for Titan even now. Since Titan is gong to have a big social aspect to it, what better way to bring people together than on Facebook and Twitter? It's the 2 biggest social interaction media out there at the moment. Why did Blizz use FB and Twitter for the D3 beta? Well it's obvious. Cause it's the 2 biggest social interaction platforms out there. It's the easiest way to get millions of people to get to know D3 (and eventually Titan).
The D3 FB page grew from just more than 1 million likes to almost 2 million with just the D3 beta contest. Dunno about Twitter. We all know Blizz wants the moola as much as possible, but who doesn't want money? There are even the integration of FB into Battle.net.
"linking the world's premier online gaming platform with the world's most popular social platform. The first step in the integration will enable StarCraft(R) II: Wings of Liberty(TM) players to quickly add Blizzard gamers who are friends on Facebook to their Battle.net friend lists, facilitating their social gaming experience on the service."
So how does Titan come into play? Well, there's a possibility that you'll be able to invite friends to play/buy/monthly subs for Titan through the FB-battle.net link. It's an easy way to get people to play your game without real advertisement. [tinfoil hat off]
there are like no chat system in the current D3 beta, but I do agree Battle.net 2.0 chat system for starcraft 2 has a really bad public chat design, hence almost no one uses it.
Are you gonna be able to speak to people playing starcraft 2 while you're playing diablo 3 ? 'Cause you know, you'll be logged on the same account of your SC2 game (if you have it) while you're playing Diablo 3. Am I gonna lose all my SC2 friends when I switch to D3 ?
With the addition of RMAH, why would any one buy D3 to spam advertise selling gear? Blizzard will likely crack down more on duping and other bots as well as they have with there other games, so not really a good reason to not have chat channels.
People who aren't social won't use the chatrooms, people who are social will. It's that simple. Just because you are lazy and couldn't be bothered to click on a channel to talk to people doesn't mean everyone is.
I don't know about you, but as far as I remember, there was never any constructive conversations going on in general chat in D2, I joined custom channels and talked with my friends and there friends and anyone else we thought was cool.
Stop trying to blame Blizzard saying they aren't giving us the tools to be social when you are to lazy (or some other variable) to use them.
EDIT: Also, i'm very social in SC2, I always have a couple chat channels open and talking to people. The one exception is when i'm laddering, but that's when I don't want to be social so I have the choice.

U cannot create ur own channels in D3
and the only channels u have to chat are Classes (monk/WD etc), Hardcore, Looking for group, and trade .. where will u be sitting to chat? .. no extra windows to open
also when u chat in-game .. generally all whispers and party messages are spammed off the screen in a matter of seconds due to the sheer volume of in-game txt also being in the same tab as the rest of our chat dialog...
Haha yep. No private channels.
Also the image of Diablo 2's spam channels is not completely accurate. If you played the game during its prime it wasn't that bad. Not to mention (as someone said) the RMAH changes that stuff up a lot. Accounts aren't *as* spammable anymore too. So if you report an account for spamming, and others do, they can ban it and that seller is out of $60 pretty quickly.

The game is being developed for consoles. Console players do not use chat features. Ergo, the chat features they have shown us are "good enough".
Also a common yet completely ignorant and stupid argument that simply isn't true. Blizzard has stated before that IF they do a console version of Diablo 3 that it will be just that, a console version.
Not a port, it's own separate version and development cycle to go with it. How hard is that to understand? The console version will have absolutely no effect on the PC version, they are completely separate games. If you think otherwise you should stick to lurking the forums or take off your tinfoil hat and step outside for once.
I don't understand how people can be this ignorant, maybe i'm just having a bad day and the stupidity is getting to me more than usual, but damn...

Who said there won't be private chat channels? ... Seriously, show me a blue post that says there won't be private chat channels, maybe I missed that memo
Now I admit, I can't find blue text that says there will be, but there are private chat channels in SC2, so the foundation for it in D3 is there.
If you honestly think there won't be private channels in D3, either at launch or through a patch right after launch, then at least say it as your opinion and not as fact.
EDIT: Actually I did find a Blue that says there will be user operated chats in game
Most people that want chat channels though are referring to guild channels, or otherwise channels they themselves can operate and choose to invite others to, and we see those as completely valid forms of chat (there's a social structure backing the channel)
He then goes on to say chat won't be in at launch, but it's an old post and has a follow up post like a day later saying he messed up and chat will be in the game.

Apparently you havn't been following the development cycle of D3, nor any of the changes they've made to the game since the Beta launched...
Yea, definitely seems like it should be a lot better than it is. That being said I hoping/expecting them to improve it after launch. So I will give them the benefit of the doubt for now.
