Since the current consensus seems that white items are a total waste to even pick up for sale now, I think the dev team should consider a way to give them some value.
In D2 there was Charsi and her Horadric Malus making those junk whites rare. There was also sockets and runewords to consider. So while whites in D2 were usually no biggie, they at least had some use.
So here's an idea. Make them a necessary item for your blacksmith to craft with. So if you want him to make you an axe-of-uber-death you must bring him all the materials +the axe. Gives the whites some value, especially the harder to get high level ones.
I think having the blacksmith require a white to craft with is a great idea. Rather than just being a reagent, it should to some extent even effect the result of the crafting. Have the crafted item inherit the item speed, looks, and type of weapon, or something similar.
However, I'd much rather them not make this change and just release the game
I had the same idea the day Jay Wilsom announced those changes ! Not wanting to steal your thunder or anything... Just saying, great minds think alike i guess.
I think it's great system because it gives some utility to white items without making you pick every white you find in your way.You will just pick those you want to forge or the ones that can be sold for decent gold on AH (some high rolls weapons to be forged).

I like this idea. It means most of the time they won't be worth carrying out, except for the specific base item you are looking for, yet they won't be pointless. Having items that the developer actually admits are pointless and only in the game to allow "loot explosions" is stupid. They should have at least some legitimate purpose if they are going to be in there at all. LOL!
The whites have value in patch 10. They range between 1g and around 20g in selling price. They aren't totally worthless, but they do drop a ton more frequently than previously.
This can only be a good thing, as a high magic find will make it more likely those whites turn into blues.
Really, that's not too different from Diablo 2 I guess. back then the values were a little higher, but they weren't worth selling after Act 1. But it still feels weird, for a developer to basically say "We want there to be tons of these items all over the place, but we want to make sure players never feel like they should pick them up." Once they admit that they are intended to be pointless, it just seems... pointless to have them in the game.
And yeh, I know the loot explosions are the stated purpose. But that feels pretty near pointless to me. If a magical item drops once every 20 kills somewhere (randon example), does it really matter if the other 19 kills are white items, or simply nothing? If the drop rate in magic items stays the same, are a lot of useless items going to make those magical items feel more rare or special? I don't think they will.

This.
I was still picking everything up today and selling the whites when quests brought me back to town anyway. It only takes a couple seconds to run over to the merchant and click all the whites and I was making 200-300g extra for the effort. Nothing huge, but its on par with running around picking up gold from barrels and whatnot.
I agree with the OP. Posted something similar myself in another thread. Even asked Bash what are his thoughts on this matter in twitter, but he didn't notice me
well isnt thats the fun thing with diablo? killing mobs until the item drops you searched for for hours. i have no problem withit. its like finding your runeword base
That's true if we're talking about late-game stuff, but if you're playing early- to mid-game it might get frustrating to constantly see recipes become obsolete because you're having bad luck finding white items.
Then again, the probability of you not getting a certain white item might be so low that my point is moot. I (and we) just don't know.
Your point deifnetly holds tbh. Theres other several "issues"
1. You could simply use a low level sword to forge a high level one in case the recipes asks only for "swords" (exemple).
2. I feel like white items would become more expensive (in the AH) then magic ones. Thats not might not be a real problem.. But it's kinda wierd that a item of a lower tier is better for profit then an high tier ones.
When I think about D3 and it's craft system all i think it's: they should revamp it. It's not working the way it is (imo).
I think it would be a great idea to have whites become like a 'base' for crafted items.
In response to the problem of finding the specific white for a specific recipe, what they could do is make it so that you can use a variety of weapons e.g. 1h swords and axes only, and then the recipe uses the white as a base, and the damage / armor is based off of the white - kind of like in diablo 2 with runewords.
This way, while the majority of whites will still be useless (as intended) there will still be that 0.1% of whites which will be valuable simply because they are make a very good base for recipes.
At 1st I kinda thought it was a bad idea, but I got to say its growing on me the more I think about it. After remembering back when I played the beta.I vividly recall picking up a ton of items, and it did get tedious after a while.

One is never hurt by being given additional choices, only by taking them away. A QUADRILLION MAGIC FIND is worthless if you can't kill shit!
I can agree with the just reduce their drop rate if their worthless comment. Who really cares about a mountain of loot if its worthless. Lets face it, I'll take a single gold brick over a boxcar of shit. Unless your just really into shit, you probably agree.
If they were to make the items at least useful for something you add some value/purpose to them. If they stay so worthless that they aren't even worth selling to a vendor, why even have them in the game? Just more shit on my screen.
As to using inferior items or just item types, I would have to disagree. It defeats the purpose of adding value to these hard to get whites if you can just use the normal version to make a elite item. If you want to make an inferno level rare provide the same inferno level white. This would create a very viable trading economy for items that otherwise just waste pixels on the screen.
I guess most of all I just hate the idea of a totally useless item. What purpose does it serve?
Give white/grey items value, or get rid of them completely.
Gold drops are worth more than items. So why pick them up?
In which case the vendors should stop selling them. Who would buy the items anyway?
Also, remove the armor and weapon stands. All they do is drop one worthless item.

I'm afraid of Apple customers. Wait until they make the iCar -you can't change the floormats and only Apple sells the gas. Don't worry, they'll buy it.

But then again if this idea will make the game more frustrating or just less appealing in some way, then I'd rather stick with the wizard blacksmith.
I'm on the fence here.
