As a piece of background, I'm old enough to have played D1, though I was a child at the time and so I don't remember following the development of D2.
As I have followed the development of D3, I have had the same feelings of hesitation as many Diablo fans in regards to some of the changes that have been made. Resistance to change is natural, but we must remember that change in and of itself does not bring about disaster. If that were the case, then Diablo 2 would have been a total failure. D2's skill system was a radical departure from the spell system used in D1. There were no trees in D1. There was no choosing of spells. There weren't even different skill sets for different characters. Huge changes were made between the first two games, and yet both games defined the ARPG market in their time.
Until this point in the development of D3, I have had this nagging feeling that D3 was really just D2 reskinned. That like SC2, there would be nothing to set D3 apart from the rest of the ARPG market other than its Blizzard polish. I was shocked and not at all pleased when I heard that there would be no skill points in D3, and then I realized that my nagging feeling of mediocrity had finally gone away.
None of us know what the system will really feel like to play, but it is my opinion that Blizzard has finally hit on something big enough to turn Diablo 3 into the next genre defining game, and I'm glad that some developer had the balls to throw out one of the most core elements to traditional RPG's because they thought it would make a better game.
It took some settling for me - but now I am not against any of the new things that have been announced for Diablo 3 (except for 1 - and i think everyone knows what that is).
The skill system is a huge change from Diablo 1 and 2... Yes it shocked me a lot and i'm still coming to terms with it. But I can definitely see the advantages. I'm not going to attack the devs for any of these changes (except that 1) and cannot really say how it will effect the game until I play. It could be bad, but i think it actually may turn out for the better. =)
They better have some amazing End game that keeps people going on because with the lack of PvP, I don't see the hardcore fans or any fan playing longer than 2-3 months, which must be what Blizzard wants with the new features they're implementing. *cough* *cough* RMAH and lack of PvP. the rest is understandable.

I can see myself playing for a lot longer than 3 months. I don't like PVP and will not be playing it at all. Its the PVE that I am getting this game for, who gives a flying !@#$ about PVP. (My opinion)

Ok, I respect your view but D2 has lived so long only because of the broken PvP aspect it had not because people wanted to beat the same boss a zillion times.... I understand it's mostly focused on PvE but neglecting PvP entirely is not right... They way it is now, I would probably only play it for no more than 2 months after beating the game and not being able to do much with PvP what's the point? Hey look guys i can kill this monsters 3 second faster than you? The RMAH and lack of PvP is what's really bothering me...
I personally like the new features, I can't wait to experiment and I will try out the AH I mean why not especially if they give us a couple free listings.
The skill system change from D1 to D2 was also extremely drastic and different and people loved it. A drastic change from D2 to D3 should have been expected, and I think In the end Blizzard will do something that makes it work and enjoyable.

lack of pvp? there was pvp in d2? there was random duel out of the rogue camp yeah. D2 was not made to be pvp at first, not even balanced for it. Its only people with urge to try to beat other that started the diablo supposed pvp. Tricking people into clicking the sword ( did that alot hehe) etc. Lot of griefing. What we get in D3 at the moment is far superior to D2 and D1 in term of pvp, you should be happy about it while they said that pvp is NOT their focus, we still get an arena and rewards (work in progress but talked about vanity items). D2 got nothing to it when you look how D3 is deep. D2 end game? there is something to do? duel random player? find SOJ? do bosses run over and over to get the best gear? Killing the ubers? Thats mostly what D2 had to himself. When you look at D3 , we dont have the end game yet and people are already crying that they dont give longer then 1 month , 2 month etc. the game is not even in public beta. We know we got arena, Jay talked about perhaps a small place where you will be able to duel (just something he is thinking about) we got rune to strive for , equipement , crafting, making real money etc. D2 had a crappy skill system, i remember having to wait till ACT4 to spend point on my druid , auto attacking all the way around to start putting point in my wind spells , that was really bad. What does that system offered? mashing a single spell at the end because you took all the synergy skill to make THAT ONE PARTICULAR SPELL overpowered thus clearing the game while pressing youre right mouse button (or left for some paladins).
to get back on the subject, of course there is change and of course we are reluctant to them. For me, the rune system is the best thing ever, i wanna see every spells with the 5 runes in it, see the effect and making a perfect build. So when they annonce they will change the rune system, i got all tense and reluctant, negative energy. But they explain why in detail and it make so much sense and i cannot do nothing but to agree with them.
The change to skill system.
D2 = put all the point you can in certain attack to get the synergy out of it so you can do a single powerful attack. always increasing its damage with each point . 1 point = 10-20 dmg 2 point = 20-30 dmg etc.
D3 first = put all the point you get in different ability, making them stronger but other a bit less. So there goes the wizard, dropping everything in a single but uber meteor then wait for the cooldown to finish, launching weak magic missile since he doesnt have point in it anymore
D3 revamp = no need for point now , every skills scale up to different thing. Now the wizard do a powerful meteor and do decent damage with the magic missile while waiting for the cooldown to do meteor.
What did we lost? nothing except to pointlesly spend point in abilities.
what did we win? overall more damage/buff to abilities, the fact to use most of youre attack and feeling balanced.
Same goes with rune system if they change it.
D3 first = yay another blue rune... trash it... yay another red.. way , how many do i have in my box? 45? pfff...lame, they should lower the drop rate, im tired of picking them up to trash them in my cauldron.
D3 perhaps revamp = yay another rune... hmmm ... my magic missile rune is kinda outdated ... should i try it in this spell or in meteor...hmm... oh meteor! Arg... its a crappy rune, well .. sell it. Yay another rune! hmm let see, meteor again... wow! holy sheet! that thing is powerful!
this is some exemples for the laugh but still not far from the truth. We are reluctant but from what i have seen, most of the changes are for the good. The only thing im not really sure about but i can understand the purpose is the real money trade auction house.... Im not sure to like it. Well i never liked auction house at first haha. its an hassle (personnal opinion here)but now with real money too? (i know there is a gold one) it solve their third party gold seller but at what cost? will we see more greediness? more people playing ALOT diablo 3 and try to win money like poker online? i dont know, i cannot see the extend but im reluctant.
So if you loved D2 , D3 is better in every point. If people were able and willing to kill that boss a thousand time, they still can in D3 with more flavor. You can now pvp with people who will fight back, because those going in arena will be willing and will put a fight, good or bad. Perhaps its that point of the pvp you dont like? no griefing?
No i'm not talking about griefing but the new PvP they have currently is just lame... no ladder, no rank, no sense of real achievements? they're neglecting PvP i understand it's a PvE game but after awhile your gonna urn to PvP and one would think the would of done a better better job than what it is currently.. it's like they're making the game retard proof and with that no wonder they would implement RMAH.... not everyone bought items with $$ in D2 but now they're making that the primary economy for everyone, and if you think people would rather put items for gold instead of $$ than your just stupid. not sure why the hell you typed out such a long respond to my previous post cause honestly my points are valid, RMAH = Blizz being hungry, and lack of PvP? well they have RMAH why wouldn't it be mainly focused on PvE since they want you farming/selling as many items as you can so they can earn a couple bucks.
-I'm glad that some developer had the balls to throw out one of the most core elements to traditional RPG's because they thought it would make a better game.
Agreed. I feel at first Blizzard was treading in the footsteps of Blizzard North to learn the ropes of what Diablo was all about. Now that Blizzard (In my understanding, and opinion) has put more effort into Diablo 3 than Blizzard North put into both Diablos combined, I feel they understand the aspects of Diablo better than its mother company ever did. I thank Blizzard North for creating Diablo as I thank the cave man who carved the first wheel. They both started something great, but living in nostalgia can only hold back improvement.
Bring on Diablo 3 with all of its glorious changes!

Since everyone will be able to sell their gold and farm, let's take me for exemple. I did alot of run in my weekend because i wanted to and made lot of money. Someone sell 15k for lets say 5$. I got there and sell 15k for 4$. Then he must lower is price or wait till i sell before he sell his gold. So then he drop to 3,99$. Then i drop to 3,50$etc. Then, you look at this... is it worth my time to do a tons of boss run to get 3,50$ for my time? Oh! i dropped arcane valor in my run, lets see how much i can have for it ... hmm there is already 6 of em... So that make the price drop and when the price are low, its really not interesting for Asian gold farmer. Because they bot and need to buy more account , some get banned etc. So if what they sell are really cheap then they must work more. It aint profitable. Third it give you a chance to make money or e-money while doing it. So lets say you find a cool armor and sell it , youre e-wallet is at 40$. You can go at blizzard.com and buy a Tyrael hoodie for yourself. Its a nice gift for only playing diablo 3. But you know, im still against ,that will change the way players see the game i guess. Way more greediness, the nice equipement you drop youll be more inclined to sell it then to upgrade yourself since youre already able to complete hell without dying, why min/max you when you can make 20$ out of the piece you just dropped?
I really dont like real money in diablo 3...
and for the lack of pvp, like i mostly explained why. Im a huge pvp-er too and i understand youre concern but i understand that when D3 got public, in the first Q&A, they said "Its not a pvp game, we dont care about it and we wont balance for it". So with that in mind, if you feel down for them not "taking care of pvp", they said it from the start. Its like a small child that want to see the christmas father and he tell her mother in june, she say "no there wont be christmas father this year im sorry" Then around december, the child is still hoping for christmas father but her mom keep telling him he wont be there, he knew it from the start but dont want to open his eyes. Its like that for most of the pvp hungry players in d3 , they dont seem to get that they dont want to get involved in pvp, they said it at the start and people are still at their throat for not putting a better pvp. I would love to get a special place to go pvp, i love the last man standing and i would love to have the deathmatch option, you know, doing both. For me ladder are not that important though. But yeah, i know i repeat myself but alot dont seem to want to understand that its pve game with a little side bonus of pvp, like enabling to be attacked in D2. D2 didnt have pvp at all , no focus, no ladder, no special game for it, only social code of conduct for pvp "supposedly".
The only real setback from this is re-playability. Since characters don't put points into anything, there wouldn't be much of a use to replay an older class that you've already completed unless it's for stories sake or a switch to HC mode.
As long as there is still room for skill customization (runes) and character customization (gear), then I think I can live with it.
For most people PVP came after the first play through, get to hell kill baal, find some gears pvp some peeps.. now no one knows how long it will take to get to this piont in d3 but its safe to say, and i think jay W. said it, they can and will be adding them sorts of things in as they go and if the community wants it just not at launch, because they dont want ppl installing clicking find 3v3 game, they want ppl playing pve, so i have no problems with beliving pvp will come later,
I dont wanna say it, and im sure ill cop it. but i played d2 from launch and continued to play untill WoW came out, then i played that from launch, and im not sure how many ppl will remember this but when it started PVP was non existant, then you could pvp/ duel with NO REAL REWARDS, then as it grew and people started liking it more and more they added in rewards and eventualy it became an intire game in its self..
Im just saying there is no gaming comapany that dose content like blizzard, i mean even d2 10+ yrs after launch we got some new content and community events,
In conclusion- "Not at launch." dose no mean NEVER!
This has nothing to do with Blizzard having balls. Guild Wars did the exact same thing and it proved to be a successful formula - in that kind of gameplay, which is completely different from Diablo.
So theres no such things as builds any more, if at all they are about 1/1000th what they were since everyone with WW ,and bash will be the same since everyones WW and Bash once they hit 60 will be exactly the same.
and no "builds" since everyone can switch skills around willy nilly.
so there is no need to make more than 1 of each character since you can basically have all of the skills.
also essentially at level 60 you will end up with 6 maxed skills xD

in guild wars correct me if im wrong, you still put points in to stats which effected your skills yes? like ''fire magic'' you increase would increase all fire spells, so its not really the same.
As a piece of background, I'm old enough to have played D1, though I was a child at the time and so I don't remember following the development of D2.

TLDR; It's crazy enough, it just might work.
Blizzard's innovations have never been particularly successful, so I'm pretty leery of this. Every system Blizzard have had success with has been a system that other people worked on for years, that Blizzard then copied and improved, and most importantly - POLISHED! That's true of every Blizzard game, from Diablo through to WoW.
You say that D2 defined the ARPG market - but it didn't, not really. Most of the ARPGs that came after it had their own systems, or were inspired directly by Diablo 1 (which itself lifted all the most important gameplay elements except online multiplayer from roguelikes such as Angband and Moria).
You say "So crazy is might just work!".
I would agree with that, but it's a big "might". Blizzard's recent track records on innovations is not a strong one. Real ID-type systems, for example, are not becoming more common, in fact, after Blizzard found how much people disliked them, several companies quietly shut down projects to set up their own "Real ID"-type systems.
I think the skill system will work, because it's essentially a rip-off/refinement of the Guild Wars system (or so it seems), but I don't expect to see it copied. Online-only, no mods, well that's par for the course since Guild Wars, again. The cash AH? It's likely to make Blizzard a lot of money, but to give D3 something of a "buy 2 win" reputation, even if it's not deserved. Which will actually ATTRACT some players, but they're not the sort of players I enjoy playing with (not because they're wankers, necessarily - but because they're more interested in either making or spending money than having fun in the game).
This has nothing to do with Blizzard having balls. Guild Wars did the exact same thing and it proved to be a successful formula - in that kind of gameplay, which is completely different from Diablo.

You have a fixed number of points which you can re-arrange for free every time you go into town, so it's actually more similar than you would think, because you basically max the couple of skills/stats you need, so it's not like the numbers vary a whole lot.

It's not 100% the same thing, but the main concept, which revolves around a myriad of skills and only several of them being usable at a time through the hotbar - is the same.

Im just saying there is no gaming comapany that dose content like blizzard, i mean even d2 10+ yrs after launch we got some new content and community events,
In conclusion- "Not at launch." dose no mean NEVER!
and no "builds" since everyone can switch skills around willy nilly.
so there is no need to make more than 1 of each character since you can basically have all of the skills.
also essentially at level 60 you will end up with 6 maxed skills xD
in guild wars correct me if im wrong, you still put points in to stats which effected your skills yes? like ''fire magic'' you increase would increase all fire spells, so its not really the same.
