WIZARD Current State [Tal'Rasha & Vyr] Fire-Arcane-Cold
Hello guys, i felt like dropping my 51 cents here to show everyone my perspective and to learn a bit more about the class from your comments to it:
First of all mind that Jade Set Witchdoctors are one shoting elite packs in T6 so as a Wizard the best you can do is to stack
Magic Find gear and use teleport to keep up buffing your party with the four people magic find buff.
Sets
Tal Rasha
- The 4 piece proc is cosmetic, as the meteors wont do any dmg since they use different elemental trees and you dont run a meteor build with +meteor damage on your gear.
- This set bonus is helped by using a Triumviriate that boost by 10%max 3 elemental trees and also the passive Elemental Exposure adding 5%dmg taken for each elemental tree active on your target
- The frost meteor gives you an extra slow and the lighting meteor an immobilize to your targets and one of the meteors will actually do damage since it will be the one from your chosen elemental tree.
- The fact that Elemental Exposure passive is very easily useable by any Wizard spec without the help of 4 piece Tal'Rasha's and that each meteor has a different elemental type makes the set bonus not game changing at all and as i said, in my perspective, just a cosmectic bonus.
- On the other side, its also "free damage" much alike your Thunderfury proc, and why not use it? Yes, everyone does because theres no better option.
Vyr
- The 4 piece bonus reduces your archon cooldown for 20 seconds, since it incorporates the lightning rune.
- 3 of the 4 set pieces (chest, boots and pants) are slots that cant roll cooldown reduction so, to optimizeyour archon uptime, the set is a must have. [Consider archon as the only wizard ability that does dmg, as each target killed on its duration boosts its damage by 6% and stacking]
Current playstile (T5/T6)
- At 50% cooldown reduction + Vyr set youre at 30 seconds in between archon's. (120s archon cooldown, -20sfrom Vyr = 100seconds, reduce 50% to it and its 50 seconds while each archon lasts for 20 seconds)
- Cooldown reduction kicks in and has diminuishing returns, also each cooldown reduction roll is a either a dmg or a defensive roll you trade for.
- Defensive rolls should be looked into as very important to your killing speed, as each second you back up and each second youre moving away youre not doing damage and this way, slowing your killing speed.
-Dieing is not an option either as u loose your reflection pools stack, that stack till 10 times and thats lets you level up your paragon points at a confortable rate.
While your not in archon form
- While youre not in archon form theres plenty of choices as a wizard, making it a fun class to play. I just read a forum post about no build diversity as a Wizard and that was what made me come here and open a new thread.
- Since Vyr set combines all the archon runes and your highest +%elemental modifier is chosen to deal the damage, you can freely choose between fire, frost and an arcane build as a nuker while youre out of archon.
- Before having the Vyr set only the arcane rune has the +22% dmg boost and not using it is gimping your dmg.
- The options here are ray of frost, arcane torrent or desintegrate and magic missile-conflagrate.
- Each of the options have a couple items that boosts their potential or that are mandatory. They also have different advantages, as better in single-target dps or area damage, better in crowd control or better vs waller affixes. They end up being roughly the same.
To your build you can add Born and Captain Crimson sets for extra cooldown reduction, this lowers your overall damage
but is offset by a more continuous usage of Archon in comparison to the 4 piece Tal Rasha.
The optimal wizard in my opinion would have a triumviriate on his offhand boosting his tal rasha proc, use the vyr set, aughild set and bourne set. This is achieved by using the ring of royal grandeur.
Weapon - Born weapon with 10%cdr
Chest - Born set
Gloves, Pants and Boots - Vyr
Belt, Trinket and Helm - Tal Rasha
Shoulders and Bracers - Aughild
These conclusions take into account the usage of damage boosting skills like unavering will, audacity, elemental exposure, magic weapon and familiar.
Also the usage of black hole needed for crowd control and archon as main dps ability.
Not the usage of Wand of Woh or Strong Harm bracers.
Wonderful post! I am in a similar situation though I haven't really considered Born's set. I have been trying to optimize for T5-6. I'm a pretty big fan of having all 4 elemental meteors active at all times via ice armor but it's much harder to live in T6 without prismatic for me at the moment.
Thanks for your post. I have come to mainly agree with you and realize that the Rasha's 4pc isn't nearly as effective as I'd hoped but it DOES increase damage and provides needed CC in times of need. I'm currently not using Archon because I don't have much CDR and only found one Vyr's piece so far after weeks of farming unfortunately.
I main a Wizard and have got a LOT of game time and experience in. Done a lot of research and only recently have started farming T5. That being said I find that the popular build of familure, magic weapon, prismatic, AT and using frost nova instead of black hole is very effective. There is a nice synergy with the meteor's and between stuns and damage done I can melt most mobs and elites pretty good.
I'm running 3pc Aughilds, 3pc Blackthornes and 4pc Rasha's. You have given me some insight and I will try to seek out the Vyr's set so that I can maximize my build and use Archon which is what I'd LIKE to use but as I said I have not much CDR.
I wish there were viable 2H wizard builds. Of course, Im not sure there are not, but searching google Im not finding any good ones. Its more a flavor thing. What if the Staff of Zoltan Kuhle were a legendary; it would be awesome. To my understanding it makes very little sense to use a 2H when sources give so many benefits. I dunno, maybe they could fix this by letting staffs have 2 gems...
I have to very strongly disagree with your post about Tal's 4 set bonus specifically. For YOU, it may be cosmetic. But for ME, I do run a meteor build and it works with tals quite well. +30% meteor damage + max damage % bonus to any of the 4 elements will result in main element hitting for 35m + 2m per seconddot for 3 seconds (unless lightning then 8 seconds). The other 3 meteors hit for 15m with 1m per second dot for 3 seconds (except fire which has lower damage over time than the other 3 but hits more times for 6-7m). So lets just do some fun math. For 0 arcane power, every 8 seconds I can do 100m damage to any enemies in the group. Then factor in the utities which you failed to mention comets. Comet has a 20% chance to freeze, and a 100% chnce to slow. Lightning bind has a % chance based on ur crit to immobilize all mobs for 8 seconds. The other 2 runes are just pure damage. Then we add in the 3 piece bonus, +100 all res and AP regen. Then +5% damage for the 2 piece bonus. This set is a power house in torment 6, you just have to learn how to use it.
Even subtracting 30% meteor damage if you don't want to focus on those drops, you still would be getting a total of 60-75m free are ofeffectdamage every 8 seconds. I would love for you to convince me that this set is useless and used only because we cant equip something else. Also you described Archon as the only damage dealing skill. Credibility for your whole analysis is a out the window on that one. And, to make matters worse, Blizzard has already stated numerous times that class buffs are on the way as well as buffs to class sets. So I fail to see the point of your entire, mostly inaccurate, rant.

I totally agree. Tal's set bonus is good on its own even without the Vyr set. The free meteor damage is the only big burst damage that a wiz can get if you are not running EB+WoW assuming you can run at least 3 elements. If you can stack more +meteor damage then the free meteors can kill elite pacts in less than 5 secs for t4 mobs if you time your BH right. Im currently foregoing the free comet meteor as I can't fit all into my build (by adding cold dmg) without compromising my DPS as I'm running pretty much AT+BH+Archon build. I'm running 56% CDR but wish I can get a few more and i'm in need of a Tal's neck. But I love the Tal's set so much that I even ran it without the Vyr build for a long time just to keep up with my T5-T6 group.
I'm interested in the Firebird's new set bonuses though as I already have the full set and is just waiting for it to be reborn (pun fully intended) in 2.1.
this Tal-Rasha bonus discussion is sort of a "sour grapes" thing.
I can tell you this much after spending a lot of money and time trying out different builds: Tal Rasha damage, even without +meteor damage, does a lot more than people think. Having all elements proc + unwavering it's getting a pretty serious damage boost for everyone in squad.

What do you say?

i was thinking Gesture of Orpheous but I haven't found one to test vs my TF.
I do have tal's belt to throw in place of harrington's in light of triumverate- guess i'll have to test that ..
Anyway, thanks for the post!

I have a much easier time giving up Vyr's 4p for a combo of 2 other 3set bonuses, than giving up Tal's 4p.
