I have not played D3 in quite a while. I have a level 60 wizard at paragon level 1. I stopped playing a day after the paragon patch came out, but had slowed way down well before that. I only have about 150k in gold. I will link my gear when I get home. It probably isn’t good at all. I bought a cheap skorn, 170 Crit, socket. 330 int, 170 vit 1300 DPS for like 5k. I think its black?
If a good friend of yours were getting back into D3. What build would you tell him to use for a wizard? Where and what would you tell him to farm on what MP level (new to me)?
I want to level and build up my resources (gold and gear)
I have read the guides, including the gear guide(seemed the most up to date) I like the thought of the Black Ice wizard if I could do it inexpensively. IE. If you tell me Archon build, low MP, farm here, level and build up your gold, I’ll take your advice. Basically I am asking for help, and telling you I will listen if you take the time respond. I value your time and appreciate the gift of it. Thanks in advance
I'll probably put in some more input after I get home from work (I'm on my phone).
But...
1. How in the world did you get a Skorn for 5K? A Brimstone is work 20K alone.
2. The most effective builds by far are Archon and CM/WW builds, with the latterformer dominating low MP for EXP farming and the latter for group high MP runs, though with proper gear both can handle all sorts of MP levels with different personal play styles.
I'll check things out in-depth later. Or someone can chip in for me

Just to clear up this (probably phone keyboard induced) confusion: the first, Archon, is better for low MP XP farming, and CMWW for high MP runs. And yeah. CMWW is better as of now for groups because Archon sucks in groups, but this will change with 1.0.8 (in 3-4 weeks or so, hopefully).
If you like Blizzard, by all means, go for it. Many people just want the pew-pew of Archon or the immortality of CMWW, but these two builds (though incredibly powerful at high gear levels) are also a bit boring. Archon means to click the right mouse button 24/7, while CMWW is brainless keyboard smashing as its best. However, Archon and CMWW are more effective (XP/hour) than Blizzard builds.
You can combine Blizzard with some defensive gear in the beginning, use the defensive skills to survive, and slowly start working on your DPS - and switch to another build if you feel it's going too slow.
CMWW has lots of gear requirements and is probably not the best thing to start with a 150k budget - it's possible, but I'd not recommend it. Archon might be possible but without seeing your gear it's hard to tell; I felt that Archon needs a certain DPS to become fun. Whatever it's gonna be (it sounds like Blizzard might not be a bad idea): make sure you have enough allres/armor/HP to survive, farm wherever you like (e.g., act 2 MP1 Vault of the Assassins, act 3 MP0 Keep+Crater, or just entire playthroughs), build up your gold... and so on ;-)

1. well...I started looking at weapons because I thought mine sucked. I saw lots of Skorns. I couldnt afford anything with lifesteal. I sorted by duration left...it was up for 4 mins left. waited for to 1 min(kept refrshing)....set my watch...when ~10 secs left I put 50k in the bid. It had no buyout...minimum bid was 4.9k got for just over 5k.....WIN for MEEEEEEEEE
Thank for input, look forward to your post when you get home....I will try to link my awful gear as well(its old though) was decent when I got it

Since that Blizz multiplayer update with the note about Archon assist kills, I would say gear for Archon too. The Idea of 4 Archon Wizards farming together sounds awesome to me
Now I am just trying to get my friends back into D3... come on multiplayer and Itemisation patches!
In terms of getting some extra money to gear with.. i would suggest taking your 150k gold and going on the AH with it to flip a couple of low level items so you have at least a 1 mil budget.
Search for armour under lvl 10 with +exp vit and a main stat (int or dex) and try and buy a good looking one (chest, shoulders or helm are the best arnour types to flip) for under 100k that has only been listed within the last hour, then sell for 500-700k for a quick sale.
- might be a bit faster to gear up for inferno rather than trying to grind inferno to find a sellable item
Thanks Bag, it was a phone mishap. I was actually climbing into my car and wasn't totally focused on what I was physically typing (though everything sounded right in my mind).
Fixed.
Mmm...
1. If you wanted to run a Skorn, you're better off with one with either life steal or life after kill. Archon dominates with life steal and it makes killing problematic elites with Reflect, Plague, and some sort of crowd control a trivial matter.
2. (Oh my, Inna's Glory, haven't seen that in ages) For pants, you want to focus mainly on high int and vitality with all resistance and/or armor to go with 2 sockets. That's rare pants though. Otherwise, you can grab a pair of Inna's Temperance (yes, the "new" one) with vitality to start and that will shoot your DPS right up. If not either rare pants or Inna's, you can get Blackthorne's Jousting Mail, which is great for EHP.
3. Stack crit chance and crit damage first on your jewelry pieces and gloves, then add attack speed whenever possible. For jewelry, also consider high min-max damage.
4. Craft shoulders and bracers to start. Essentially anything you craft should be an upgrade over what you already have.
If you can't afford the necessary upgrades, don't worry. At your current state, you can easily run Shock Pulse - Piercing Orb, Venom Hydra, and either Blizzard - Snowbound or Frozen Solid to start. Mix that with Teleport - Fracture and Prismatic Armor (or another armor if you find yourself surviving pretty well) along with Diamond Skin - Crystal Shell and you should be good to go on MP0 Act III farming to start. Basically drop Blizzard and Hydra down and let the Hydra do its thing while you stay back and fire off some Piercing Orbs and use Teleport to distract mobs that get too close or pop DS when necessary. Farm from there and build up your paragon levels for bonus base stats and MF.
Check out Bagstone's gear guide for in-depth gear analysis (Bagstone, really, you should create a signature that links your guide). You can also look at my profile as... a rather long-term project. RasAlgethi24 is also a top-notch wizard, though I think he's maining SNS right now (profile).
Once you get a few more key pieces of gear, I would recommend using Archon or CM/WW builds for long-term EXP and grinding purposes. Once you get high-level gear, it becomes much easier to fool around with different builds and actually making them work on mid to high MP levels. I was recently messing around with this skill set on MP10. It works, but who the heck uses Mammoth Hydra? It's not very fast, but it's rather fun. But at lower gear levels, it's tough to make it work without getting stomped on high difficulties.
I strongly advise gearing for mitigation and EHP in general. I used to run massive DPS, but as a glass cannon, I actually had to pay attention or else I might die to tricky elites on high MP levels. With a cushion of EHP, and life steal as I recommended, it makes your farming runs much more... relaxing, I dare say.
I may have items that can upgrade you, so feel free to add me. I won't be on until after 7 p.m. EST when I'm off from work. And P.S. if I happen to remove you from my friends list in the future, don't sweat it. I'm constantly trading items with people so my friends list is always near max capacity (have to keep adding/removing).
Check out Bagstone's gear guide for in-depth gear analysis (Bagstone, really, you should create a signature that links your guide).
Done. Mmh, I should've done this months earlier... anyways. Thanks for linking this. Actually, Magusrex was one of the few who seems to have read the guide ;-)
Just as a side note: if you like your Skorn and if you also like Blizzard, you can also stick to it for now. LoH + Blizzard works fine, in particular with low DPS. LaK is a nice option, but needs a certain kill speed, and LS trumps LoH at a higher DPS (difficult to give a number, but I personally felt it's somewhere at 80-100k). In the end, you want to switch to one-hand weapon and offhand source anyways when you choose Archon, as it'll give you lots of stats. Skorn is viable for Blizzard, though, I have one as backup, too. So... you can also upgrade other gear first. For example, craft new shoulders!
Wow, thanks everyone, I can tell it's quality advice, I had already found the gear post and it shall be my D3 wizard bible.. Great advice. My skills have eroded, but blizzard was pretty forgiving. I was messing around some with different armors. I think I can use it until I get my feet underneath me. Crafting was worthless when I left, I will look into it, I hope I do not have to grind to be able to use it. I hate grinding crafting in any game, makes me puke in my mouth just to think about it.
When I left the game I primarily duo'd with my wife's demon hunter and we were successful at kiting. Kiting, is out of style and not as effective it seems(regen gear was useful kiting). Elite packs did not give me too much trouble, died once or twice to them(was me more than build or gear IMO). Game seems easier than it used to be, was expecting my outdated gear to get me crushed. Yellow mobs were relatively easy, did not run into any very fast reflective bosses with invulnerable minions so we will see how that goes(used to piss me off). I killed some purple mobs, I don't remember them. Had no AP problems, could lay RoF indefintely it seemed. Black Ice and Blizzard layed wasted to masses of mobs. One teleport to pop some illussions, the elites went down before they knew what was up. All in all very happy, look forward to aquiring the gear to archon up for 1.08. This was all in inferno ACT 3 the keep and depths.
All in all I had fun, the advice helped, my brain wasn't all over the place because I had a plan thanks you guys. Tonight will be better. How do you change the MP level? Any short crafting tips I should know, will look for a post on crafting but I have the attention of some very bright people so I cannot help but ask some questions. I am sure I have will have more with my second night of play, last night was really just remembering what to do. I was unwilling to join a multiplayer game until I got some practice.
^ I think you should be pleased that Invulnerable Minions no longer exist in the game and perhaps you've noticed that Reflect Damage is only active for short durations at a time, not permanently.
Game's certainly easier at the base, which is why Monster Power was introduced in order for you to tweak the game to a difficulty of your liking. To enable it, go to Options --> Gameplay and it should be on the bottom right-hand corner, then you can change MP when you're selecting your quests.

I did not recognize that reflective had a short duration. Last night I was really trying to move properly and push the right buttons. My fingers are used to EQ2 and Tera online and their respective UIs(games I had been most recently playing) No invunlerable minions. that is flippin' hot!!!! I read the 1.08 patch notes, I am actually a little bit excited. When I left there was no way I was buying any expansions for D3, I think I am already leaning towards it will be likely that I do.
The helpful and friendly community here doesn't hurt either. I am a professional adult, with a family and home, I know how precious time is. Mine is the most valuable thing I have, that I can gift to my family and friends. I assume your time is just as valuable to you. When you take time out of your day to help a stranger, it says so much about you, at least to me it does. I cannot express my thanks enough to everyone who has posted here.
I had a great weekend playing D3. If you look at my gear link above I was able to improve my gear a bunch (if you remember what it was) I finished inferno on MP2 and then have farmed act 3 on MP3/MP4. I can do MP4 fine, even MP 5 but I can go really fast on MP3. I think that seems best for farming or should go slower and take mp4/5?
On MP3 Storm armor kills things at range as it come on the screen sometimes. Black Ice with a Blizzard over the top melts massive amounts of mobs instantly (fun) I have joined some MP5 groups and have held my own just fine. In groups, spamming Blizzard is very nice.
I like this playstyle and I want to improve upon it. I would prefer LS over LoH but those weapons are crazy expensive, I am sitting at about 2000 LoH. How does LoH work with Blizzard, Ray of Frost (black ice) and Storm armor (does anyone know the math?) How much better would LS be? I have been trying to stay away form IAS equipment because it so expensive. I was thinking that these skills lend themselves to slower large damaging weapons. I am correct? In a perfect world I would like to remove snowbound but I have tried and miss the spam factor snowbound allows for.

Many of you are gear experts. I am still enjoying this Black Ice build. Using Ice armor and Jagged Ice allows me to do MP7 Act 3. With the Tal Rash Set bonus and the Passive skill my AP regen is 14AP/sec Ray of Frost with my gear is 17.44AP/sec. If I use Storm armor ( power rune) RoF 14.17/sec is much better but Ice armor is sweet against melee attacks. Looking at my gear http://us.battle.net...97/hero/4552603 What can I do to fix the AP issue?
The 4 piece set bonus(because I have to wear the chest) gives me IAS which doesn’t help but lets me have the 3% frost and 2 AP per sec. Can I get AP on crit , 2 AP/sec or reduced RoF cost in a non traditional piece of equipment? IE. not an offhand or helm? Should I just skip the Tal Rasha’ 4 piece and go for a really good helm?
What you talk about is actually quite expensive and needs you to swap lots of pieces of gear. In particular, if you're getting rid of Tal helm, you could just try to get a rare helm with int, crit, APOC, and Ray of Frost crit chance (I actually just sold mine a couple of hours ago). However, that would probably still let you lose some DPS and the set bonus obviously.
Another solution is to try other runes like Conduit or Arcanot. (I guess you've had a look at this list here, maybe it gives you some food for thought.)

Yeah...arcanot...didnt want to go that way. Expensive for the gear...I figured.
Arcanot was the way to go. I think I like Energy/W prismatic Armor even better than Ice armor(jagged Ice) The jagged ice makes you feel invincible to melee damage but the with Blizzards spammed everywhere you can lose sight of ranged attacks and get surprised by a bunch hitting you at once. As I improve the defense of my gear Prismatic armor seems to scale very nicely. I usually have black Ice all around me so melee mobs do not stay around long anyway. The extra defense of prismatic synergizes well with the high LS I have, it makes it hard for mobs to outpace my health return, reflect bothers me very little.

Yes, IAS is not very beneficial for these skills.
Storm Armor does not proc LoH at all! Here's a list of all proc coefficients.
The 4 piece set bonus(because I have to wear the chest) gives me IAS which doesn’t help but lets me have the 3% frost and 2 AP per sec.
