So here's the deal. I've been playing my wizard since launch, after trying out the different classes in beta and deciding on the magic-flinging dude. I'm a casual gamer, but I'd say I'm pretty good at playing games. I've cleared Inferno with him, but it's been a looooong, hard road.
After Paragon levels were introduced I got a little bored grinding with him and on a whim decided to level a monk. After I hit 60 I spent about 6 mill buying crappy gear and decking him out. Now I made a lot of blunders (I actually forgot about One With Everything and bought All Res gear... Yay me) and my spec would probably make most other monks wrinkle their noses in disgust. But... I am astonished at what I can do with him. I seriously just ripped through A1 and A2, pretty much not dying at all. Unless I decide to go full retard things aren't even close to killing me and my clearspeed was insane.
Now, my question is: is the difference between classes really that huge? Should I just shut up, l2p and come back when I've cleared Inferno? Or have I been doing something wrong on my wiz? I've pretty much tried every single spec that's ever been mentioned (from an AO/Blizzard spec, to CM wiz, to Archon, to my recent favorite Forked Lightning/Meteor) and I haven't been close to doing what I can do on my crappy geared monk. Could it just be a matter of playstyle? That the monk just suits me better? Or what?
My monk has only a few million in gear also, and I had no trouble getting him to act3 in Inferno when Inferno was actually hard. And I wasn't buying allRes equipment. Wizard... not so easy. More like *SPLAT*. Often. So yes, there are big differences between classes.
with your damage try going archon and you should melt shit....
Agreed. You have pretty much the same dps as I do unbuffed. After Magic Weapon and Sparkflint you'll be over 95k. You also have about the same resists as I do and same health, with maybe a tiny bit less armor. Archon should make Act 3 easy mode.

As I mentioned, I tried an Archon spec for awhile, running Alkaizers route, and truly, shit was indeed melted. My main gripe with an Archon spec was the extreme squishiness when not in Archon mode and the insane rush to find more mobs the whole time. Not to mention I still went *splat* on some Hulking Phase Beasts with horrible affixes, even when looking like a purple god.
I guess it really just comes down to playstyle, maybe I'm too aggressive or something. I tried a CM spec and yeah, I guess they might be even more tankier and do more dps than a monk, but I just feel silly facerolling my keyboard waiting for CM procs to get skills off cooldown.
I'd like to thank everyone for their input though, it was nice to get some good feedback on my little problem ^^

It's like a different game: little need to care about the mobs and what they do, just to speed through levels without running short on things to kill. It's not so laid back as it sounds (point, click, pew pew, dead).
About Phasebeasts (and fast Tremors to an extent), there's a sweet spot where you burn them before they burn you. Spot raised by Extra Health, and even more by Reflect Damage. Both affixes at the same time should be your bane.

I didn't notice before, but Force Armor is your friend. That makes you MUCH less squishy against elites. For the hard hitters like Phase beasts and Demon Tremors, you'd probably need to do a little kiting in the form of Beam til they get close, back peddle a bit, beam some more, and repeat til dead. I also find 24% movement speed extremely helpful for that.
I also run out of Archon form quite often, so I use Lightning Blast. I tried storm chaser but I felt like I couldn't actually do anything while trying to use it with CM to refresh my Archon. With LB I can still mow down mobs and kite elites (thanks to 24% run speed). The dps on it is pretty decent, and since I use a 2h, I find the faster attack animation preferable to Piercing Orb.

Hmm, I ran with Prismatic. Could try Force a bit. Also, doesn't LB have a horrible coefficient for proccing CM?
Yes it does. 16.7% for each target hit if I recall correctly.
But you use it as an all-around nuke, it's quite versatile and powerful while you wait for your Archon CD to be up. I prefer FL though.
Yes, 16.7% is correct for the coefficient but the point of it isn't to proc CM it's for you to be able to continue farming to some degree while waiting for Archon to refresh. I think it's mostly a preference thing. Some people like Piercing Orb (which has a 0.25 coefficient, but can only cast about half as often) and some use storm chaser. Forked Lightning, as the poster above said, seems to be another popular choice, or you can use whatever spell you prefer. The idea is to either use that spell to refresh CM (usually done with SC), or to have something spammable so you can still kill elites and other mobs. It's a bit slower trying to kill elites with LB compared to Archon, but it's not as hard as I expected.

Any insightful comments?
I'm not sure if I'm allowed to create hyperlinks yet (nope), but let's try this. Here's my profile: http://eu.battle.net/d3/en/profile/Ael-2331/hero/1787659
TL;DR: Monk seems way more powerful than wiz. Is this the case or is it just me?
