I havent played with a wiz that much due to the class seemingly underpowered to me without highend elite gear. Now i got nice chunk in the bank i kinds wanted to revisit the wizard. With the new patch, i got to wondering if a pure cold skill build was viable, especially with the new frostburn gauntlets. Noone has really said anything about it that i can find. So along with frostburns the only cold skill stuff i can find is the tal rasha set. With 4 pieces, u get plus 3% cold skill and regen 2 ap per sec. Along with a cold skill tal ammy and frostburn it seems to me that the damage could be significany increased. Has anyone already tried this and found out if it will/could be good? Are there any other types of items like frostburns that could help? Tals set post 1.04 seems to be much better but im not sure if its better than rares which is sad. Im kinda a newbie with a wiz so be gentle and thanks for ur time!
Well, the only cold skills are Ray of Frost, Frost Nova, Hydra (Frost), Blizzard, Meteor (Comet) and Ice Armor.
You'd obviously want the Cold Blooded passive. If you combine that, the items you suggested and Frost Nova (Bone Chill) you could get some impressive multipliers to damage going on. Plus, Frost Nova sets the mobs up nicely for a Meteor (Comet).
Problem is, this is an expensive build - and you can't go pure Cold because there aren't any Cold signatures.
No idea how good this will be because I've never used it. But if you're going for pure Cold, you don't really have much of an option when it comes to skills.

im running a fire centerd build with fire skills and + fire modifiers on my witch doctor. ( http://eu.battle.net/d3/en/profile/Vomica-2555/hero/321226 )
and so far its doing crazy damage but i have nothing to compare it to really (damage number/tick vise). so i dont know how much of an increase it really is.
but ATM i have + 12% fire damage and 25% to fire skill damage. and +12% to both locus swarm and corpse spiders. both running as fire.

Is blizzard not a cold spell? And ur right I didn't think that about sig spells..... I was thinking ray of frost was sig spell.(doh). Well that really blows. So pretty much is what im reading is a cm/ww build id the go to build. Ill have to read and try to figure out how that build works. Kinda dissapointed, I was really looking forard to trying out tals set
Frozen works on Frost Nova, Blizzard (Frozen Solid), Ice Armor and some weapon proc's.
Chilled works on all Frost damage, whether from skills, cold damage on weapons or whatever.
If you do damage with Cold, at all, it will enable Cold Blooded.
As for the build, you could use Blizzard and Ray of Frost, it might be cheap enough to not bother with a signature spell.

What about like casting blizz, the using ray of frost to finish? I know I would need alot of AP regen. I would like to try to use full tals set just because I think it would be neat. I really would love to have a character that uses a set. But I been playing with my wiz and she been getting her ass handed to her. Anyone use tals set with other skills? Or other builds?
On a complete side note has anyone else tried out Electrocute: Lightning Blast as a replacement for Shock Blast: Piercing Orb? Its wonderful, so much more control and speed to the blasts and it just shreds grouped up mobs. Makes killing goblins a lot easier as well!
I used it all the time, although I tend to use Seeker more now.
I first chose Piercing Orb because a lot of people said it was amazing, and that it went through Waller walls. I found it's damage to be very iffy because it oscillates, it's cast time is slow, and (in 1.0.4 at least) it doesn't go through Waller walls.
So I looked for an alternative, Lightning Blast, and I never looked back. It's a much faster cast than Piercing Orb which makes up for it's lower damage. It also doesn't oscillate so you can be certain that when you cast it into a pack it will hit all the mobs you intend.
I honestly don't know why anyone would choose Piercing Orb over Lightning Blast.
And since I used it with the typical Blizzard (Snowbound), Hydra (Arcane) and Signature setup, with Cold Blooded it ripped through mobs.
This sound pretty cool, actually got me thinking about doing this. How is this working out for you in terms of AP? Do you need APoC? Or is this sustainable without it? Also how do beams work with the AP cost? Is the beam AP cost based on attack speed or ... ?

Yeah, Blizzard is a cold spell. Why would it not be?

Edit:
This is the build I tend to use: http://eu.battle.net...QiOX!ZfW!bbYaYa
It's for HC so forgive the excessive defensiveness of the build.

Yes, it uses the AP per "swing". So a slow weapon is best to not empty your AP in seconds.

Wouldn't a fast 1 hander with APoC and an offhand with APoC counter that equally? It's just going to cost about 10x the price though lol
