I'm currently using a 900 something DPS + Intellect 2h Sword. Wondering if switching to a Wand with a Source is effective.
I find myself oftenly running out of AP and swinging my sword in the air, when using a wand instead of doing this it sends a bolt that can hit from a distance. It's funny, but when I use a Hydra+Blizzard build, get close to the mob and start hitting it with my sword I deal a whole lot of damage more than when kiting forever. Maybe if I'm able to hit with the wand while kiting I may improve my Effective DPS?
Also, looking on the Ah it's hard to find a high DPS wand, however if the trade-off from being able to shoot when out AP is a DPS increase, it may be worth it!
Wands will be good for wizard since they have wizard specific affixes, like max arcane power and more importantly "Arcane power on crit".

I personally don't like wands due to the fact that most of them have low DPS compared to other weapons for the same price. Not sure about affixes and stuff, but all wands that I came across that costed about the same as my 2-hander gave me approximately 5k less buffed DPS even when combined with a pretty good source (350 max damage).
Instead of worrying about doing wand damage when you are out of AP, why not just take a signature spell that costs no AP? Then you can spam that as you recover.
I keep switching between one and 2 handers depending on which is higher DPS. I'm using a wand/source now but was just using a 2 hander. Unfortunately it's hard to make a direct DPS comparison because the +/- stats neglects the bonuses from the source.
In the OP's case switching to a one hander with a source may help with your AP problems depending on the stats of the source (+AP of some kind)
You can do what I did and get a 2h Crossbow. That way, when you are out of AP you can fire a few bolts and stay out of melee range.
And a Signature spell is not an option, if the OP is using a build similar to mine. With all the kiting in deep Inferno, there isn't much time to stand and cast, but there are a few rare occasions you are safe enough to pump out some extra damage, and that is where a wand or crossbow comes in. Treasure goblins especially I throw down hydra, blizzard, then stand there and spam out of AP so I fire the crossbow at my displayed dps of 23k.
