Melee Wiz v Range Wiz...I'll go with Range Wiz. Frost Nova, Slow time, Illusionist, Blur, familiar, diamond skin and teleport. Range has the upper advantage unless you get massive crit constantly which i doubt a melee wiz is capable of. Spell crit > Melee Crit as a wizard. But if your skill calc is up against melee classes then you're pretty much dead to a barb and a monk....

you can get an instant quadra-arcane orb off per cast with obsidian rune. thats 800 base spell damage for 35ap. PS only works at melee range D=

You prefer to challenge and barb/monk face to face rather than range?
lol thanks for doin the math
if you crit with em you do an extra 600 or so damage from lightning shield
I get where you're saying, but the math can be numerous. You've stating "if you crit with em you do an extra 600 or so damage from lightning shield" knowing the keyword there is "If" and if you don't crit often or not at all in an unbalance situation, then teleport is used to escape until cd's are up again leaving you vulnerable to a range class. The calc is good if you get crits constantly but if not then I see it useless. Always make a melee class to outburst a range class trying to be melee
it's easy to see it wont compare when you do the math for it Ubi, things like Meteor can do over 2k dmg in 3 seconds with 1 cast, disint, and RoF can be spammed and do sickening dmg, with NO fear of melee mobs, none, 0.

ray of frost hits 1 target and comet requires 60power to use, while its dot doesnt stack. if done right i think i might be able to do damage close to a ranged wizard. but when it comes to endgame, my gear would need a thorough amount of damage reduction.
the advantage of melee dps is that you dont have to kite (hit n run) but the downside is you may find it difficult when it comes to range. If your character fights melee on melee with enough speed and enough defense to outlast a few hits before grabing orbs, it should be fairly easy to take em down with interrupts (default impact attacks that stop you half way though hits).
i would say if you build your ranged wizard properly you wouldnt need to kite, but that may be the case for a close range wizard when it comes to placing yourself close to ranged monsters.
RANGED SPELL
60 energy: much more potential in arcane regen
meteor with molten impact does about 700damage (counting part of the dot since cast speed is much higher than 3seconds)
MELEE SPELL
35 energy: much less potential in arcane regen
arcane orbit with 3 out of 4 hits does about 450damage (since if you spam it the rotation of orbs wouldnt get all the way around to hit the target before you recast it)
seems like their potential for damage (with no experience in late game and little to go on) is close.
no, those changes are over Ubi, now its just fine tuning any major changes will come with the first content patch. Now it's just making sure all the game features work and stress testing the servers. It would take a major class change to make melee wizards viable.
They were more viable in d2 because of ES 95%DR + 20ish PDR/MDR = 0 damage taken with Warmth and Enchant you were lulululing. Enchant could also buff others that played with you. The only thing u feared were Mana drain mobs, but u just let ur merc clean those up.
They wont do better around this time, you can already see it. You could make an effective CBQ (close quart combat) Wizard to be effective, but if you actually have to swing your weapon to deal damage, once, you've failed.
They would need a RADICAL change to Magic Weapon and Spectral blade. Radical skill changes wont come this far in development, it would push the release back, all they can do is tweak numbers slightly and move some stuff around.
Magic Weapon is goddamn useless in its current state.

Iowl, meteor shower does 2296 dmg, like i said, we've already theory crafted and crunched numbers. You use slow time, and drop 2 meteor showers for 4592 dmg, and thats AOE dmg, before we even add any of the +dmg percents from other skills such as the 140% from slow time

do the rune effects from magic weapon proc on spectral? if so, i think it could be a little op in future
Just to show you, one of the variations I might be using for meteor, there is a couple, this one does the most dmg, while still giving some defense with teleport + Slowtime + Frost Nova.
160 AP pool
2296 + 140% from Slow time + 110% from frost nova
1 cast is 8036 dmg, 2 casts is 16072
in 4 seconds you deal 16072 dmg (before added + of Attack modifier) without being touched by melee

Your opinion on Magic Weapon being useless is fine and all. But saying things cant change at this stage of development is just bs. Look at what they are doing to the DH just as we post this. I dont think we can rule ahnything out before we try the game. Or maybe you have tried it since you appearently know how it all works out. As someone else said said we dont know how strong melee weapons will be for wizards. If they are strong you could use arcane orbit or chain reaction (or both) before you go into battle and at the same time deal damage with your melee weapon, which could deal quite alot of damage TOGETHER. But we dont know. And yes melee wizards probably wont be as good as ranged wizards, but the potential for good melee wizard builds is there.

People blew the DH changes out of proportion, they changed the Cost of the abilities, to help with spamming since DH we're sitting on no hatred with some builds (which is bad) and they changed the lvl at which get some skills, they shuffled skills around and tweaked costs of skills. No skill EFFECT was changed.

True, but its not like tweaking one or two skills is that big of a change either. Merely tweaking of numbers and not changing how the skills work. Anyways they might not need tweaking since we really dont know how well they will work. I dont see why blizzard would implement these skills if they are utterly useless. Also, that melee sorcs were barely viable in in d2, should rather give blizzard a lesson than to have them do the same again.

if electrify works from magic weapon from procs on spectral, the number of hits & crits would be enormous.
