Every player always associates him or herself to some extent with the character - you are controlling its moves after all, and when it dies you say "I got killed by a stygian doll" and not "my character got killed by a stygian doll".
Eh, really? To me it's always like a separate entity, the character, is telling me, the user, that he got killed by the stygian doll.
Of course you always realize you are not the character. But I think that to some extent you have to associate with the character in order to be able to play the game. Even the way you control the character implies some association: you click a monster, he attacks it: you attack the monster through your character. The very idea of "role playing" (really think about those words) implies association with your character.

That only applies for FPS really. In FPS I very strongly associate the character with myself.
Anything else, though? That's someone else running around not me.
I also never really liked the Sorceress having an orgasm whenever she died. It pissed me off.
LOL! ... it's the little things in life isn't it. ... back to playing another gender in game doesn't mean you want a sex change. Besides chicks that wield weapons are bad *ss. Most chicks are gay and wield hairspray bottles so its more in the "cool" category than it is "turn on"
I'm going to name some of my female characters along the lines of Steve, Jeff, John, etc. just to change it up and keep things different. As for my gender preference, I suppose I tend to lean toward male characters since I am a male.
Edit: I used to chase the succubi in DI so I could see their low-quality butts and boobs, then zoom in on them. I was an 11-year-old kid. Go ahead and laugh it up but my character was just trying to score with some sexy demons.

I make sure people go to jail. The only thing more fun is Diablo 3.
Eh, I'm a girl, so I'm accustomed to using game characters of the opposite gender. I prefer it, honestly, especially if the male character is nice to look at.
Also, as a Squaresoft fan, I have to say the male wizard kinda seems like "home" to me. The main difference is that while he's pretty, he's not angsty -- which I can't say is a bad thing.
I think you misunderstood me. I was saying it's good that he's not angsty. Whether or not I mind it depends on the context and execution, but a non-angsty pretty boy (again, somewhat rare in the JRPGs I usually play) is a welcome change of pace.

I understood ya fine. Was just saying sorry to anyone here that may LOVE the angsty-boys, and may get all offended. Haha.
I'll probably play a female wizard, since that's how the class was introduced. I like to play the classes canonical. I'll end up playing both. Gender doesn't mean much to me in video games.
i'll definitely be going for the female. when i roleplay, i'll have boobs
Aesthetically, I find it more pleasing for people's bodies to be tight and together rather than loose and saggy. I associate breasts with the latter. This is one of the reasons that I will be playing the male wizard.
How old are you man? You want your character to have "boobies"? lol..... I will always pick a male character over female, even with the same gear you know the character will look tougher.
Why should a wizard look tougher? I want my wizard to look swifter, more magically accomplished, and smarter... not... well... like a male blood elf
for casters and agile classes(like archers) I've always preferred females, for brute force characters I prefer males. Just feels more suitable. So my wizard and my DH will be female, my barb will be male, and the other two I'm unsure of.
while reading some posts made me remember good old football (european version). you are male and want to watch another dude in front of you while he's running, kicking and stuff? go play soccer or male wizard!
socially accepted variety, now that's the future! i'm proud of ya.
anyway, i like female characters just cuz i like to see women. period. but a barb(ie)... no thanks. that's not really a 'woman' i like to see.
Male wizards can have high pony tails right?
if not il choose female. I love dangley bits. i wana play the wizard before the wd; which ever has the best appendageyness i am bound to choose.
When it comes to character gender, I stick with whatever "feels" right to me.
Like when I started WoW I went with a female troll shaman, cause while I did briefly try the male troll as a shaman, to me it didn't feel/look right. Otoh, I ended up with a male troll warrior, female orc rogue (I tried male orcs and undead but didn't click with me) female dwarf(!) paladin, male gnome rogue (was tempted male dwarf for a 2nd rogue cause they have that feel like they want to murder you instead of being sneaky) and male undead mage for the exact same reason.
Part of the "feel" might be like one of my friends for phantasy star online was tired of the male animations, went with a female robot model, changed the scales and gave them an androgynous green colour and named them Gwork (this completely confused the hell out of other players trying to figure out which gender his character was.)
Then there's the lolz, like that same friend and I like female gnome warriors cause of the silliness of a little cute bugger taking out things far bigger than they are.
As for the Diablo 3 wizard, I'd have to play and see. When I read the description of the wizard's personality, it reminded me of Ertai from Magic the Gathering (young, full of himself, talented and thought he was more powerful than he actually was. Oh and he's also a wizard adept.) The female does however come across to me as being more playful with her powers, like casting any spell make her smile. The male on the otherhand has this regal "I'm better than you" vibe to me, which I like too.
