Hahaha! Just checked the gameplay vid! Either the wizard has a tornado skill in it's tree, or there are items to give it skills! YEAAAHS!!! My druid friends will be so pissed!

It's an Energy Twister, not wind type at all. It just looks like...
Btw, why are people complaining about the Wizard name? I think that's the best and most unspecific you can get. It's classical and Blizzard wanted the Wizard to control the powers of the universe. That's the best name for it!
Wizard is great!!
Pwning enemies with unlimited arcane power!
I like those spell names SPECIALLY disintegrate, this name define power!
Let's get rid of fire bolt, ice bolt, BLIZZARD GIVE US UNLIMITED POWER!

a tornado? either way it all but ensures the druid tornado as we know it is gone and I get to laugh at my druid friends in their time of misery HAHAHAHA! THE TEARS OF THE INNOCENT SUSTAIN ME!!!
Omfg... I cannot wait for this game, especially after seeing this character (and the RUNE SYSTEM!!!). Dammit, Blizzard, why'd you go and make this game so awesome???
I'm not sure I understand the objection to the name 'Wizard'. Although mechanically very similar to the Sorceress, the Wizard is clearly very different in lore terms of how it approaches magic (much less elemental, much more arcane) and needed a different name. 'Wizard' is an extremely old word that works quite well.
As for the classs visually, I'm happy to be able to play a male character that is neither a brutish hulk nor a gibbering tribesman. Not to mention that the series really hasn't had a truly arcane-oriented 'raw magic' type character. The original Sorcerer was perhaps the closest, but even then mostly elemental.

I really dont like the name Wizard, i really dislike it, makes it sound like a 4 yr old kid running around with a lil fairy wand and trying to DISAPPEAR stuff, seriously, why not summin kinky like Warlock or summin imba like that
I personally like it.... though I was hoping for something hinting at the Vizreji (I know I spelled it wrong) as far as lore is concerned. But I can't really complain... we all knew there was a caster involved... The Warlock idea is generally thought to be "Dark Magic" ... and this is anything but "Dark".

Warlock is not a more mature name then Wizard.
My problem with wizard name is the fact that i expected more creativity.
In terms of gameplay, it's just a soc with new spells imo. I dislike it because i'm in favor of not recycling old gameplays, just creat new ones, but i must admit that theres a huge amount of soc fans that would a D3 without a pure spell caster that use teleport and magic shields as defenses and big bad explosions as offense.
However, there is some new stuff like slow time, runes and the own skill system change that will force you to have and use around 6 spells, that can make the wiz gamelay diferent from the soc. Still, i don't consider the Wiz a new class. It's just a remake (like the barbarian), but deeper.
untill now i've been a reader on these forums, but all this complaining about the name "wizard"
and it being a copy of the (previously awesome) sorceress made my keyboard itch
imo all you cry babies are full of shit, if blizzard released the male version of the wizard
you probably wouldn't be whining all that much about the name
as for it being a copy ... yes there are some skills we've all seen before,
but again ... male version -> less whining
just give me one example of a similar game with a completely unique skill list ? ? ? YOU CAN'T !
i for one love DI, DII and will love DIII !
and even if the wizard was called "bozo the lightning clown" i would still play him/her !
sure ... everyone's a critic, but in the end we will all pay for it, play it and love it
I'm not talking about ''unique skill list''. I'm talking about the overall gameplay of the class.
The WD is a new class imo. He channels spells by using summons as reagents. Noone in previous diablo game done that.
I like how they worked the word 'Wizard' into the lore...being an insulting term for an impetuous young brat with no patience or skill to be truly called a 'Sorcerer'. If you look at the people complaining about the name, it's just friggin' hilarious. Gotta love irony.
Anyways, this will be the class i will play (unless something really sweet jumps out). I like being the boom stick, and i'm a DnD/Forgotten Realms fan. No power in the world can stop me from casting Magic Missile at The Darkness. Also, disintegrate is friggin sweet and panders to my inner nerd.
Ok, far to much whining, but whining isn't banned on forums (in fact, it seems to be part of forum culture, based on every forum I have ever visited) so people telling people to stop whining is just as unhelpful.
I am one of those who doesn't think the name Wizard is all that great. Some alternative names could be:
Elementist
Channeler
Magus
Conjurer (not, in fact, identical to a summoner)
And I invite others to think of more. However, the name Wizard isn't that offensive, I would just prefer another if at all possible.
Also, I keep hearing people refer to the class archetypes left, and mention the rogue and knight, but also mention a ranger.
Has no one ever played Diablo here before?
Rogue = Ranged class, morons, remember D1? There has never been a stealth class like the rogue is generally associated with in Diablo, and probably never will be. Diablo is about killing lots of people, not sneaking around.
So we have:
Barb - Melee Class - Offensive
Wizard - Magic class
Witch Doctor - Pet/magic class... the summoner
What's left?
Knight - Melee class, balanced or defensive, possibly with secondary abilities like pally had
Rogue - RANGED CLASS, uses primarily bows, probably not stupid nature rangerish class, something more along the lines of the rogue and amazon before, BOW SKILLS, with magical bow and other ranged weapon attacks.
As for the Wizard, I don't know what exactly is so wrong with it. It's just a repackaged sorc. I want the sorc back, so aside from the mildly annoying name it's a great class. Make it's name better, and it's ideal, or just make it the returning Sorc.
And the old skill system in d2 was, frankly, bad. I love D2, but the skill system was terrible. There was limited flexibility and wasted points because of prerequisites, and any system that encourages saving points at low levels shows just how broken it is.
Plus, there were so many redundant skills! For example, on sorc there are three different fierballs... They are all the same in terms of usage, with only minor differences like splash damage or whatever. Why not just have ONE fireball skill, and scale it so that it doesn't suck at high levels if you keep putting points into it?
The new skill system is better than the old in some of these respects, and for that I congratulate blizz. Spells are pretty much unique (at least in their trees) and they seem like they are built to scale with level better.
Eh, in my opinion, it's the perfect class name for a time and space bending nineteen-year-old. It goes great with her appearance too, as long as they don't give her any gigantic staves and wands.
It's certainly a better name than most of the suggestions in this thread.
Actually the word "Wizard" doesn't really fit this class and seems very much out of place to me. Let me explain why.
Firstly, the etymology of the word is not at all gender-neutral (for that matter, neither is warlock). I consider it a grammatical error to refer to a female spellcaster as a wizard, and I have never heard it used to refer to a female in any context before.
Secondly, the word conveys the sense of a wise old man. For example, like Gandalf in LOTR.
However, the Wizard class that we have been shown is certainly not a wize old sage. She could not be more opposite from that. She is a young, reckless and headstrong attractive "sophomore".
I do not have any problem with the word Wizard by itself, but it doesn't make sense to me to completely misuse the word as they have done. If it were a wise old man, that would be another story.
Considering what she is, I think she would be much more appropriately named the "Sorcerer/ess" (it should be a different title for male/female), or the "Mage/Magician". Sorcerers are usually used to refer to spellcasters that are not necessary wise and may be headstrong. I don't care that the name is already been used before. If they don't change the fundaments of the class (which they haven't really), then I see no reason to completely change the name simply for the sake of trying to trick people into thinking that its a new concept because its not really. The word Magician sounds slightly less male-biased then wizard and also does not contain the root for "wise" so I think that would also be a better choice.
But the idea here is to break barriers and actually go for a juxtaposition. You are absolutely right that the word "wizard" conveys not only a male persona, but a wise od male persona, but that is what makes the wizard that we see in D3 more interesting. She is NOT what we think of as wizard. It's more interesting when you break conventions in a game as opposed to keeping EVERYTHING the exact same as how they always are. The fact that she is reckless, young, and headstrong and doesn't wear a robe is much more interesting to me than the same old wizard archetype that we are already familiar with.
In terms of the word itself as a class name, I was moreso refering to how the name of this type of spellcaster correlates to the spells and abilities used in the game. In that sense, it makes complete sense that she would be called a wizard. Also take note that she uses an orb instead of a wand, staff or any other conventional spellcaster weapon. There are definitley enough differences here from the sorceress.

Elementist: Innapropriate, as the elements are only 1/3 of what the wizard is. That, and she doesn't even master them all, just the ones involved in the storm.
Channeler: Usually refers to the channeling of spirits, which isn't at all what this character does. That said, it could refer to channeling other things.
Magus: I actually aprove of this one, although it is a little to close to mage.
Conjuror: Same problem as Elementist. Conjuring is only 1/3 of what she does.
I would guess they actually created most of the Class before they gave it a name. In the end, Wizard was just what fit best. Also, if you read the Lore behind it, she picked the name herself just to be different, as none of the other casters in sanctuary used it. She took it as a sign of rebellion, and others followed suit. The name makes perfect sense once you put it in context.

I really need something different, in gameplay aspects, from D1 and D2..
