Has anyone tried a WD pet build with all items returning damage at physical? I am leveling a WD to 60 currently level 20, I got excited about the build and bought enough thorns gears to return well over 10k physical damage per, and it only cost about 250k. The items also had a very fair amount of int/vit/res all surprisingly. I don't need it to be dominant, just "viable" lol I think I could serve as a pretty good tank for a party while returning some pretty good damage. Could really use the summon buff comming in the near future, but I still have time to level.
Has anyone tried a build like this? What do you guys think?
Until Blizzard does patch 1.0.4, and makes the WD pets actually survive longer than a single hit in most of Hell and all of Inferno, it won't work. Their health doesn't scale at all right now, so they die instantly.
I have actually been using a build similar to Runc. I found this (http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/5271500086) on the blizz forums and I have found it very useful. My dogs still get one shotted on the Skeleton King but for the most part it is working surprisingly well. I am able to handle most champion packs and I'm also farming act 1 for the most part. I haven't tried act 2 yet though. I suggest giving it a read if you really want to make pets work.
If you do go this route, don't get too obsessed about dps. I currently started to stray from the guide in favor of more dps and my dogs are dying a little bit more.
This is the build I am currently using. I was using Big Bad Voodoo w/ ghost trance, but I find the army to be a little more fun.
I was running 8000+ thorns and 1200+ regen... the grasp is easily changed for locust, soul harvest, or bears if you want, or if you use the Scoundrel with a cold weapon..
The self reviving dogs were great for some big hitting shots on elites and packs... just do rush it cause they do not respawn right next to the target
with 20+11+14 mana regen and a shield, 800 life regen and 300 life on hit, total 10% chance to CC effects freeze and stun. and i do act 1 and 2 with little to no deaths. dogs dies quiet alot in act 2 tho but it is manageble.
my gear probably has room for thorns also but its so hard to look for 6 parameters on gear atm.
int, vit, armor, resist, thorns and life regen
and stun and freeze on weapon, shield, gloves and belt.

This is the build I am thinking, but nothing set in stone yet.

Also, wouldn't Jungle Fortitude help keep them alive longer?
