those last 2 spots? nothing is better than pets. you already have your best damage spells, and pets do *some* damage, so already they have a dps advantage over everything else that would be doing nothing most of the time. pets are 'always on' defense. no other spell matches that.
no matter what 4 spells you pick or what passives you choose, those 2 spots are for pets if you want the better build. i might play a petless WD at some point just for the fun of it, but i'm going to do so understanding it's significantly worse.
Are you trolling? I can agree to the point that a pet or several is good because it is constantly on and that's one or two less skills you have to worry about. The dogs just aren't that damaging, some here on this forum even called them useless. They are a good distraction but hardly more than that. The garg is on the other hand the better choice imo.
You can't just state that a build without pets is going to be weaker. It's all in the building of the build and the gear obviously. A WD with maybe 3 highly damaging skills and maybe 3 CC skills is going to be good imo.
He isn't trolling. I agree completely; those last 2 skill slots should be reserved for pets.
anyone who says dogs arent vital just plain doesnt know how to use the WD or how he works properly and will always make second-rate builds. now this doenst mean the skill zombie dogs is a must. it just means out of the what....4 different ways to summon them you get at least 1. http://us.battle.net...tor#.YjQ!a!..Zc
even calling them 'just distractions'. distractions will be VERY important for WD's in inferno especially solo. the difference between 3 monsters attacking you and 7 is a huge difference. and you cant rely on CC when some monsters will be immune and when its durations/effects are reduced naturally

having summons not only means they are doing damage while you are but they are also distractions and permanant CC and will allow you to spend MORE time doing DPS and LESS time doing CC so it will ALWAYS be better to have them

It wasn't better to have them in the beta against SK, as they died in one shot and were a waste of a skill slot.

and as i stated CC, which really wont be useable/workable on inferno bosses i was obviously talking about killing out and about, not bosses. where they dont insta-die. and in the beta thats without the 3 passives that make them better.

Don't act like you have the slightest clue about how release is going to be. Also, your absolutest statements (re: always) are just further proof of the self-delusion that you continually spread here.
If they were absolutely essential, they would be a baseline ability, not a random skill choice, noob.

It is a random skill choice, but there is a perfectly reasonable and logical reason for that.
So that the noobs don't pick it, thus fucking up their builds. There are lots of mediocre skill decisions throughout the game to screw up your character, and they are intentionally put there so you mess up. Through trial and error you eventually figure it out, and your understanding of the class mechanics progress. This is just part of the natural progression of the game, and even more seasoned gamers like myself will learn quite a bit when we actually get in there and start playing. The only difference is that we will just adapt faster, as we are more accustomed to the game features and mechanics. We are just trying to give you solid advice to get you off on the right track.
Although, a lot of people don't realize this, but noobs are an important part of a game community. After all, who is going to buy the inferno Legendaries I put on the AH, if not for the noobs? Also, who would me mentor, and feel superior to, if not for noobs? That sounds kind of arrogant, but it is the truth. Building up a character you can be proud of, one that you can sit back, look at, and say "damn I am awesome...I am way better than those guys over there" is a huge part of the game.

One is never hurt by being given additional choices, only by taking them away. A QUADRILLION MAGIC FIND is worthless if you can't kill shit!
People posting in this thread acting as if pet abilities are needed are retarded. But go ahead, make your pet class and have fun, but you make sure to come back to this thread in a month and go, "Oh yea, I was retarded", when everyone realizes what should be immediately obvious to someone playing around with the build tool currently.

the ONLY thing thats obvious is that having pets are always superior to not having them because thats FREE damage while your casting spells because.... wait for it retard..... YOU CAN ONLY CAST 1 SPELL AT A TIME DOHHHHHHH. . so since you cant multi cast your build will always have higher DPS with pets, maybe not a lot but it will ALWAYS be higher. also for inferno its PERMANENT CC so you can spend MORE time casting damage spells and LESS time casting CC also greatly increasing overall DPS. it always baffles me when kids like you enter theorycrafting threads acting like you have any idea what your talking about with absolutely nothing to back it up.
by all means feel free to give ANYTHING to back up the opposite

Hey man, you don't need pets when you have friends. That really opens up a lot of power potential in a team. Solo obviously WD is built around his pets.
