He's referring to the old Blazing Spiders which used to do 52% Weapon Damage. Now, yes Leaping Spiders is by far the better choice, unless you specifically are looking for fire damage.
after finally testing leaping spiders they are far better then even the crimson spiders before because before using spiders was difficult and half the time they would die off without even attacking at all or only a couple times out of the 8 attacks.
The old crimson spiders were 52% weapon damage, throw in Vermin and Pierce the Veil they went up to 74-75% weapon damage, 75% x 4 = 300% weapon damage per second, or 900% weapon damage for a single cast. Compare that same build to Alabaster and it's 173% weapon damage or 519% weapon damage for a single cast. Before Alabaster was situationally better while Crimson was a monster of pure DPS.
Saying something like Alabaster was better than Crimson with your only logical reasoning being that you have trouble aiming slow projectiles just makes you look uninformed.

lmfao.... you have NO IDEA how hard spiders are to aim and how they die most often before even attacking or only attacking a couple times out of the 8 potential attacks. the leaping spiders 100% guaranteed. im in the beta there genius. you are obvioulsy not. ive tested both for hours. you have not. your just speculating while ive actually tested them.
fact: spiders were decent at 38% dmg + vermin. but they are difficult to aim and missed their chance a lot to get there 8 attacks. i used solely this spell in the beta for about 5 run throughs and still loved it.
fact: leaping spiders in the beta only do 30% so an 8% nerf PER spider attack. much like the difference between the old crimson and alabster runes before the nerf
fact: after hours of using only leaping spiders the killing rate is at LEAST 3x faster compared to the old spiders that dont leap but do more damage. its awesome. get over it its a good thing. so stop arguing over something you know NOTHING about and that i know EVERYTHING about. its an oxymoron
fact: i am a doucher, i know this. but you'll probably just quote this and reply and agree without replying to how i just pwned you.

I just got beta today thanks to this lovely site and well...spiders are pretty much junk now. The leaping spiders are usable, but you're still lucky to get more than 6 attacks out of a cast. The price is a bit high for that.
Other stuff I noticed about the new build:
Mana costs on skills no longer scale with level.
Your mana pool still goes up with level, but barely.
Anything over 40 mana better be amazing, that's around 20% of your entire mana pool.

6 out of 8 is far better then 0-2 out of 8 from before. so spiders are bawler now. use them more as you get higher once you get decent DPS. the leaping huge distances to reach enemies is amazing

I guess, but 6 out of 8 is still less damage than a single poison dart, which costs half as much mana.

you mean with the first rune of poison dart? yes thats true but thats extremely precise. spiders you can miss by 25 yards and they all leap and hit with most of the 8 attacks.
its much easier to kill groups with the spiders who are spread out because they jump around.
just mess around with spiders more after you get some more dmg. how much dps do you have?

What are people talking about?
Crimson Firebomb does 190% dmg as AoE.
Hungry bats hit for 200% wpn dmg, 240% w/ Vermin.
Posion dart still sucks ass. In fact with the huge nerf to Snake to the Face for PvP, i can't even think of a use for it now.
Edit: Dogs suck? LOL!
Firebomb is down to 100% base damage now, poison dart is far better as a single target ability. You are misinformed.
We unfortunately don't know how Hungry Bats works, it reads as giving up its AoE for single target homing which is good if thats what you're looking for, it is better than Poison Dart in the damage department regardless, but there is something to be said for locking down for a channel as opposed to shoot and move.
pretty sure dogs are trash because they were never meant to be damage doers. only slightly help in the dmg department and 90% purpose as a meat shield. i have a few ideas for patch 13 of how to make up for that and make a pet build still work but its definitely harder now with the dmg nerf to them
crimson rune on dogs - 2% wpn dmg as aoe around them. (wtf 2%? wow thats a waste of a rune...)
obsidian - 9% wpn dmg over 3 seconds (so 3% wpn dmg per second to a single target? waste again)
so ya i dont even understand why they have these runes because they dont help AT ALL. you would literally not notice this dmg even with the best gear in the game in inferno. 2% is a HUGE joke. and no spells/runes do not scale with level

I'm not interested in getting into a pissing contest over a rune that has been heavily nerfed. The fact of the matter is that the old Crimson Spiders outdamaged Alabaster Spiders by a massive amount. In situations were uptime can't be guaranteed, say vs. a wizard in PvP Alabaster could situationally pull ahead, as it was designed. Once again, your ability or lack there of to aim projectiles doesn't degrade a rune's worth.

The problem there is the main way to boost a dogs beefiness, Zombie Handler also took a 40% cut in effectiveness.
Thanks for the information. The WD is going to be my first character and its nice to find a sensible crowd who at least take in other peoples opinions and not just break out the flames first. With the current opinions of dogs being poor damage (No beta) does that mean going for a massive pet build isnt as vialbe as it could be?
Is mana a problem or are you better stacking for regen? (with teh new patch changes)

I'd say with 4 dogs n gargantuan runes for xtra dmg and the passive to give them thorn dmg from u will still be very good. I still plan on making a thorn oriented pet build to level up with ease

I'm not a big fan of the fact that they are reducing the zombie dog's damage. I can understand that they do not want passive skills that require no effort into killing monsters, but there is an air of the Diablo 2 "meatsheild" minions about the change. Maybe I'll have to go with sacrifice now...
Well done. Its excellent to see someone take the time to document all the changes. I made a post about the grasp of the dead rune changing the damage of groping eels when different weapons are equipped. Perhaps you could test this out and comment on your fondings
