It is quite telling how 'broken' Dex is when in the guide he specifically mentions to go for Str items in place of Dex for the damage mitigation...basically this is a Palm bot build. Interesting, but I don't want to be forced to play a certain way because of the inherent weaknesses with the class atm. Hopefully patch 2.1 sorts all of this out.
After some testing I have to say lightning monks are pretty close to T6. But ONLY when nearly BiS geared. I'm actually eager to add EP with FoAz to burn through packs. Toughness is right there with heavily stacked OWE and MoE:Hard Target. The damage though. I kept switching from LTK to Pillar and ended up with the second option. Simply because it works much better vs big groups. Both skills have similar dmg vs bosses.
Recently I got a decent Inna's and testing it now. Sheet toughness went up by a lot but on T6 level it's barely enough. Still it's not as big issue as our damage... 2.5mil Elite DPS and every rift takes ages :/
I see most of you going for the 4pc Monk set bonus over e.g. the 8% IAS from Cains. I like my IAS because it helps with crowd control and spirit (and also my set boots are badly rolled). I was wondering if you feel the extra damage is worth it.
I've tried Pillar vs. LTK - my feeling is that the Pillar kills most stuff faster, but I am more likely to run into problems e.g. with nasty elite packs or some rift bosses, while LTK's stun gives me extra room to breathe here. I also tried the new freeze-rune for WoL yesterday, without any cold gear on, and was quite positively surprised.
Finally a comment on the diminishing returns. First, I think diminishing returns is a misleading term. Most stats scale linearly, so adding more always leads to more damage, there is no such thing as "too much" of a specific stat. What does happen however is that the stat balance changes as you stack more of one stat.
We can illustrate this with a simple example: Assume you have +100% lightning damage on gear already, and no +skill damage. The choice is between a head (A) with +20% lightning and one head (B) with +15% LTK damage.
(A) brings damage for all lightning based skills to 220%, i.e. a 10% relative increase
(B) bring LTK damage to 200%*115% = 230%, i.e. a 15% relative increase, but only to one skil
Similar arguments can be made for other stats, or e.g. for the comparison of +elite and +lightning damage. So I can see Andariels beating EotS in pure DPS, in particular for Monks that are high on +lightning and low on IAS. However it also uses up an additional main stat slot, which has to be compensated elsewhere.
@Thundersteele. I dropped my Cains set bonusto use the Andariels Helm as I kept most of my AIS (only lost 3%) but gained a massive 20% lightning damage which overall is better imo (from a pure DPS point of view ofc). it is a knock on toughness though, so I'm not entirely sure if I will keep using it(however I would like to). I am thinking of swopping out my shoulders for a Aughilds so I can get the set bonus back. I will lose 15% lightning DPS but it's probably worth it in the long term (maybe I can keep my Andariels then?).
Not sure about using Wave of Light on a lightning build as u lose all of the lightning % buff...
@Hipopotamo. Yeah I don't know hey. I'm not sure what it is (maybe Dex being a near useless main stat for mitigation as I have previously stated?) but my monk which has double the toughness of my Crusader/Barb is not as survivable simply due to those two classes having Str as a mainstat.
I've tried MoE: Hard Target and I find MoH: Time of Need to be superior even though the Toughness gain on the former is much higher because of the useless Dodge mechanic. Dodge and Vit need to be heavily 'nerfed' with regards to how they contribute towards your Toughness stat as currently it is very misleading.
As for Innas, I have a3 piece(same as you in fact) however I find that without at least being able to select a Rune from one of the Mantras it makes this set bonus a lot less useful. I mostly use a Mantra forits specificRune (save perhaps for Conviction which can stand on its own). If they allowed for this then I can see this being a BIS set piece going forward.
What would you guys recommend out of the 3 choices I have with these 3 Odyn Son's to pick from
Wanted to know out of the 3 in the pic posted, which would be the best to pair with TF. Sucks that I got all 3 on my crusader and none rolled with a socket. So the last one in the picture is the first one I got that I have been using. The first two are ones that i got recently so will have to reroll something for a socket.
But lets just say all 3 have a socket, out of the 3 which would be best?
First one has the most lightning dmg but lowest dmg range and the proc chance is not great.
Second one has highest proc chance and dmg range is in-between the first and third.
Third one has the highest dmg range but lowest proc chance and lightning dmg is 15%
@ Hipo - I am pretty jealous of your inna set. I have wanted to try it but, every time an item drops it seems to grab the most terrible rolls. Being able to do t6 rifts solo is pretty hot, I know thats what the majority of other end game toons can do. I really enjoy my cyclones but, I may try dropping for palace.
@ Thundersteele - If you are having trouble progressing I would suggest the Ashera 2 pce to replace your boots and pants. The 2 pce is 100 all res and 3 pce with rrog will give you 20% life. Both stellar bonus's.
@ KRayn3r and Thundersteele - I'm not sure how you have spent your paragon points but, that may help in gaining toughness. Thunder you havent capped a tree out yet but I would split your defensive in to all-res and armor. If you can get to 1400 -1700 all res with moh mantra resists, you will notice the difference.
I had previously run conviction or retribution all the time. The added defense from the resists and allowing for a small 50k ish dmg bubble will help a lot. It will allow for some movement without just feeling like you need to fight till you die, or waste dashing strike to reposition constantly.
I have my points spent such -
max run speed - then all dex max attack speed - then all crit max all res - then % armor max life on hit - then area dmg
Attack speed with bloat your dps, or rather it has a strong mod when they calculate it for sheet dps in d3 I have read. But, as a monk, attacking fast is win. I went with max run speed so that I have the extra slot to do something on my boots either armor or skill dmg if I already have bonus armor. All res is no question unless you can hit 1400 with no help. Now this is interesting as well, the d3 toughness model rates % life stronger then % armor. If you can get 400k hp I feel for dps that is fine for t6. The armor helps tremendously but, the defense/toughness number may not reflect it such. LoH scales well with many monk generators, I feel it is too good to pass up. Once you can put points in to area dmg it is incredible.
Thunder you may try using the life on hit rune with mantra of healing as well if you can get your resists to 1400. This may bump you in to t4.
One of the most difficult play movements with the monk right now is getting lashing tail kick to connect. If not then you end up whipping the air and your spirit is all going to waste. Master that dashing strike and the numbers will fly !
Thanks for the feedback. I've already split my Paragon points in Armor/AR, then run speed and LoH. I will try to experiment with different Mantras, I haven't explored this possibility much yet. Actually I think if I can re-roll my belt with AR, and get one more item with lightning resist, then I should do better. Maybe I will look into crafting the other set. I haven't really tried T4 yet... maybe I should go and see where I stand.
@Krayn3r I see. WoL:Numbing Light was just to test the freeze effect. For a few days I've been running with WoL:Pillar, which is lightning based, but I feel a bit more safe with LTK.
Hi Miffy. Well firstly I would reroll the AR on your amulet to CHD. Then I would try and gamble a Blackthorns' Pants and make a Cain's Gloves+Boots. As for the SOJ, definitely an important piece however it does cost quite a bit (15 vs 5) to roll for. After you get the pants I would say sure, go for the SOJ. You still need to get a Ring of Royal Grandeur. You can then also replace your Shoulders/Bracers with a nicely Crafted Aughilds set
@arlee89. I would go for the 2100 DPS one. Not only is the Proc chance increased drastically but you also get Life after kill which is a nice stat to have.
@thundersteele. Wow, I tried out WoL: Pillar of the Ancients last night and it was pretty effective. Not sure whether it is better than LTK but was really fun to use in conjunction with Cyclone Strike (which triggers an additional 27% damage to enemies Proc).
Ok so I've managed to craft a very nice set of Aughild's Shoulder (on the first try) and I have now increased my overall Toughness substantially by gaining back the Aughild's set bonus as well as rolling for lightning resist. My Elemental Elite DPS is now2,706,457.71 which is about 160k higher than it was with the Shoulders. Not quite sure why but I'm fine with that :-p

First off thanks for the guide, but I feel like I am at a dead end with my monk. Most I can do right now is T5, I was wondering if anyone can help or suggest anything to do with my gear so i can do T6. I think i would be able to do T6 with Unity Rings but its not the route i prefer. I also have a SoH to swap out the 2 weapons equipped right now and I was wondering if thats worth it.
Glad you liked the Pillar. I feel that the spirit cost is still too high, but I like swapping it in once in a while to mix things up. Right now I think I really want a SoJ. I've seen so many Ring drops but all were Puzzle or Nagel or something like that. I like your new gear
Trust me I know how you feel. To get CC on my Andariels(for my Crusader)I had to re-roll so many times. I think the last roll cost me almost 2 mil :-p I have a buddy who is trying to get CC on his Crusader shield (HellSkull) and his last roll cost him over 2mil. I think he's given up :-p
@ Noisy - Heya, looks like your monk is starting alright but, I have a few suggestions you could try. I twas what worked for me.
In your paragon points, go with all res then % armor. As long as your health pool is about 400k hp you are fine to progress. It is what my monk uses and I have been up to t6. I prefer t5 because my dps in solo play isnt enough to make t6 worth it.
I would max out life on hit before putting any points in to area dmg. The area dmg is a really cool stat..but staying alive takes priority.
Your crit chance looks to be high enough, I would max attack speed out before you put points in to crit chance.
Talent wise I noticed you don't run with a mantra. Minus that Id say maybe go with Shroud on epiphany so that you have some sort of defensive ability. Your Trans option is good but, you don't have any health globe bonus to really make it worth it. If you can make Rhythm work then I commend you, I have tried it and feel that a solid dmg boost like runniny Unity passive or Combination Strike is more solid. You could always try NDE in place of trans if you want a more def cd.
As for dmg, don't ever worry about movement speed on boots. Getting armor and then a skill dmg is much more important. You can put points in to dex after you max out the movement. If you rolled a nice 10-15% lashing tail kick on those boots you will notice the dmg.
Gear wise you look alright. If you really feel those changes I listed do not make you "tanky" enough then you could switch to an Ashera pants / boots combo. The 2 pce is 100 all res and the 3 pce is 20% life. It is a pretty solid set bonus to pick up if another piece of gear is lacking.
To finish you have rolled % life on a few items on your gear. % life won't make you more def really. You may have a larger health pool but, that won't prevent you from being hit harder. Most items that can roll % life can also roll armor. Armor is a very under rated stat that can prevent a lot of dmg. I know this from experience.
@ Echo - I felt that soh did proc the poison attack because of the crazy amount of poison pulses the helm created but, I really don't have an answer. I also am not sure whether the proc would be a white or yellow number and this would help to see the proc if it was there. I switched to an eots and re did my monk to arcane resist because it matched some of the gear I had been collecting. My monk is below, right now I am trying to craft a pair of ash boots and get the ltk dmg.
@ Christonya - I haven't seen a light build that didnt use a spirit generator. I assume you either have run a crazy regen build or use ep with the rune to give back spirit. With your backing yes GNK would buff your dmg more. Many light monks out there run a generator possibly a utility and then a spender so the % lightning dmg applies to all of there dmg.
