Over the hill monk needs some advice

  • #1
So I finally hit the big five-O during the weekend and have hit level 51 since then.

    My battle tag is kumarpr227#1232

So I am going through a bit of midlife crisis in the game.

How do you keep it fresh?

I have been waiting for PvP but that might never come.

Is TR farming fun? The only way I could see it being fun is if it’s a noticeable exp increase over mp4 farming.

I think the last upgrade I got was sometime in early 40’s and it was the fist I bought on the ah for a really cheap price.

Since then I haven’t gotten any good drops to sell. I haven’t even hit the ½ way point to 100 yet and I feel I have spent a ton of time already.

I normally farm mp4 and do Ubers with my friends on MP 6 with no problems. The occasional reflect mob with certain affixes will be tough but doesn’t happen too much.

I know I can still use a bunch of upgrades. Echoing fury with life steal and a socket, a rare (sword, fist, or dagger) with life steal, 2.8 or higher, LoH, over 600, at least 1 dps affix and a socket, mempo, witching hour, etc. However ever upgrade I am looking at is at least 50 mil or more.

I almost have a good TR farming build ready to go. I just need to get 2 more spirit regen I think I will get it with a xep neck or a soj. Right now with my TR gear I need to back track on mobs and I tend to run out of spirit.

I have started playing a wizard and am almost at level 60 and I fear once I hit 60 I will give up my monk.

Any advice to help out monk dealing with a midlife crisis would be great.

    Thanks

I'm not a monk, but i can share my thoughts in general (regarding paragon lvling).

During my leveling, which is over in a few days, whenever i started to get bored of the same runs jsut a little bit, i took action right away, before it got truly boring. Even though i lost a bit of efficiency and speed, i've tried different builds and had fun with them, did some group farming, lot of uber bosses, challanging myself to go higher MP (now i can do mp10), I've leveld a monk to 60 and a WD to 3x in the meantime ... basically jsut doing whatever was fun for a few days. After those few days i got my mood for super fast leveling back and i went on for another 10-15 levels with no problem. Also, sometimes i just listen to some music, usually whole albums that last about an hour. I'm listening to music i haven't heard before and that makes me zone out and focus on the music more than on the game. An hour later i 'wake up' and see 50-70m xp out of nowhere.

I personaly do not like TR build. I'm having alot of fun with the normal FoT build with dashing strike. I usualy only do like 2-3 Alk runs, Alt-F4, go do something else, then in another 2-3 hours i do a few more Alk runs. It's hard not to get bored of the same runs over and over again. I'm 35 lvl away from the finish, and i'm already really bored of the Alk runs.

You can always do what i did, Buy a Scorn för 100m, force yourself to take 1 level every day on MP0 with tempest rush speed farming, If you manage to take your daily level, reward yourself with higher mp farming the rest of the day :D

I've been using the TR build doing mp1 Alkazier runs from Paragon Level 40 ish to curently 75. It isnt what I would call fun - but its not a complete boring experience either. I gained many Paragon Levels quickly doing this run/build - but it defintely slows down in the 70's. I averaged a legendary a run and have found a few that were 100m plus items on the AH.

I am continuing to use the build to get to 100. If you go the TR route - make sure you get as much damage in place as possible. The run needs to be no longer than 15 minutes or it can get counter-productive.

Edit: here is my profile http://us.battle.net/d3/en/profile/Polrayne-1173/hero/22253075

I normally use Mantra of Conviction - Overawe. But I run with a HotA Barb and switch to Mantra of Healing to replace the spirit regen lost from not having the Templar.

I'm curious, do you never run into problem with this setup? You have ~230AR and 600LoH (unless I missed something :P) is that enough to survive? And how do you deal with elites, just TR through them or do you use deadly reach/need to kite?

Also, is 120k base dps enough or do you need to go back through mobs do kill everything? I'm tempted to try TR and your gear seems very reasonable to afford.

I decided to make this game feel more like D2. I built a decent starting set and started doing runs similar to the D2 farming runs (Act 1 then 2 then 3) The XP per hour may not be as good but it feels better than running the same route over and over again.

Glad you asked. I do survive just fine with lower resistances by not using One With Everything. The LoH helps a bit and of course LS on the Skorn would be preferred, but not necessary. I die to two things - Reflects Damage and Rubberb-anding. For elites I do not use Seven Sided Strike - I use Blinding Flash and then a couple of hits with the Skorn using Deadly Reach and they are usually down to 15% health before BF wears off. Then just TR through them.

My dps snapshot for Sweeping Winds is 240k - because I make sure I have the buff from Deadly Reach - Foresight, Breath of Heaven and then I put on a CC/CCD ring in place of the Stone of Jordan, cast Blinding Flash then Sweeping Winds and switch back to the Stone of Jordan ring for the Spirit Regen. Since technically you should always have the spirit to continually renew Sweeping Winds at a 3 stack - you will never have to switch rings. Because of rubber-banding, there are many times that I'm Tempest Rushing along and the Sweeping Winds will just disappear, because I've really been standing still for 3 seconds, when what I see is that I'm running.

Most of the mobs I hit, die within one pass. I do not use Fleet Foot, because I found that I ran through them too quickly for the damage. If you can get a IAS Shrine, than recast everything, put on your CC/CCD ring and then cast Sweeping Winds. When I do, the snapshot dps is 312k. One shot everything, mostly.

Here's the key - don't run in straight lines, run in circles. I run in a straight line - see a pack of mobs and then I do a quick circle through them. If some survive, its mostly because they run away from the general circle. I do not chase anything. I move on in the interests of time.

Reflects Damage... you have to be very careful with this. If there are any projectile mobs around (fireballs, spears, etc) than I try to make a quick circle around those to drop them. One they are down or sufficiently dwindled, I cast Blinding Flash and just Tempest Rush in circles, around the edge of the pack - not right in the center. I never use Deadly Reach to try and drop any of them, because I often one shot myself if I try. The key with Reflects Damage is to only hit the edges of the mobs, not all of them at once. It does take a little longer, but it works. If they are Reflects Damage and Jailer, I usually skip them. The Jailing is cast too many times by the pack and I can't seem to keep all of them off me. I'd rather skip one or two packs, than die twice and run back.

There is a great Tempest Rush guide by Sell in the Monk forum. His approach is a little different and is certainly great - but I found this tailored to my style a bit better and does more dps. You have to be smart - you can't run into 20 mobs on the screen that are all shooting projectiles at you and expect to survive. You have to navigate a little differently. Circles are your friend.

Seven Sided Strike - very rarely are the elite packs by themselves when you run up on them - most have other normal mobs around them. The SSS (even though you try to position yourself near the elites) always seems to hit more of the normal mobs than the elites. And most of the time it doesn't drop them all instantly. You still have to do some dps to them. It just wasn't the answer for me.

Most expensive thing in my gear was the amulet - because I wanted the fire resists and LoH for later when I'm duel-wielding. If you can find Inna's pants with vit on them, than you are gold - the Chest with the highest vit you can afford and the helm with 2 spirit regen at least or higher. The Skorn doesn't have to be earth shattering. I opted for a lower dex level and high vit. I got it for like 2 or 3m. A higher dex - like 500 or so will greatly increase your dps (usually by 10k at least) and of course the higher CCD the better. Just depends on what you can afford.

    Long response: completed.

That is indeed one long -and helpful- response, thank you!
I've noticed the same behaviour with SSS, even with fulminating onslaught, sometimes I'd kill a pack in one blow, sometimes they'd be still standing with over half their hp.
However, I think I actually prefer to just charge into a ton of mobs and pretty much not care about what they throw at me, on MP0 that is, so I'd probably need some more gear or use OwE.
Either way, I'll first need to save up some more gold anyways, but at least I'm set now when I want to try out TR'ing.

With around 120K base dps i'm pulling around 65m/hr with 1 hellfire ring (just got back to game and rng on parts hates me), when i get it and leorics signet for my follower i might get to ~70. Legendary drops are lacking thought, during keywarden runs (mp 5) i see few times more ledendarys / time spent.

Edit: Adjusted my route and it's around 75m/hr +-
