I have found several nice ones I tried out but just found the AS too slow to survive. Holding on to a couple to try again if I ever get any decent gear with AS increase.
I have the same issue: the AS is just too slow. I tried to trick out AS to no avail. Oddly enough my DH using a 2H crossbow was able to get +AS and work find. Maybe the Monk needs a little more tweaking(?).
I just don't see this being terribly viable ATM. LoH being a very important survival metric, goes straight out the window when you're attacking that much slower. I suppose converting the bulk of LoH to life steal % could be done... but I doubt it.
I've been messing around with a backlash build that uses a good two-hander (haven't had a chance to test with any of the real high end 2-handers yet). It uses cyclone strike combined with Backlash (Mantra of evasion) to drag enemies towards you while dodging their attacks and dealing the reflect damage. While it doesn't kill as fast as the standard cyclone build (no overawe), its rather fun to play. The general idea is to keep your crit (for sixth sense) and dex high to get the most damage/dodge you can. The one issue you may run into (I did) is with plagued, desecration, and molten as the play style focuses on the enemies being close so the ground effects can get bad unless you move often enough.
I use a 2H Tempest Rush build. Keep in mind I don't use it for the damage my main damage is still through tc and sw. I just use a 2h because of how slowly it drains spirit while tempest rushing. I use TR to just get from pack to pack in act 3. I dropped OWE and i run with about 280 AR. Everything dies within my 4 sec serenity which is why it works
I'm one of the higher Dps monks around. I had a very good 1390 dps skorn with 5.80% life steal. Yes my tooltip dps increased from 131k to 170k unbuffed dps. But my actual farming speed decreased. The swing timer is just to slow. It works fantastic vs packs and bosses. But the slow swing timer just can't handle the hordes of trash. So im back at dual wielding, since it makes farming quicker.

The only thing I can think of that may help with the hordes of trash would be something like submission on MoC. It acts as a constant source of AoE damage that procs life steal and scales with AS%. Though this is at the cost of 12%/24% damage (if spamming MoC). I've been testing with Submission and it does work well against medium to large groups (and ranged guys who like to run), but isn't as good against bosses as Overawe.
I just so happen to have one drop with 1100 LOH and 6% LS. Using it with the standard cyclone build it felt about the same survivability as my DW setup did (which only requires 700 LOH). So it seems to take a lot to overcome the swing speed loss. I did a few farming runs with it, but the health return is very spiky which can cause some issues.
You can go that route if it fits your budget, but I’d consider it temporary thing until you can afford 1h, or Bliz changes the game mechanics.
I do got 9%ias on helm, leggings, both rings, belt and gloves. Thats a total of 54% extra IAS. Still the swing timer is waaay to slow to handle trash. And for submission on mantra of conviction. On the higher MP levels, that dmg is just insignicient, Stuff got to much hp for it to matter... The conclution has to be that two handing isnt really viable with current mecanics. It just can't handle trash efficient. As said earlier, its great on packs and bosses, but it will slow your total farming speed down by quiet a tad. Making it not an option for me.
Monks only have 1 viable spec. And thats the classic cookie cutter FoT, overawe build. And two handers works super bad in that build. Sure there is other builds where two handers work, but thoose builds are miles behind, and therefor can't be called viable. The classic cookie cutter build is the only build thats effective.
I just picked up Skorn. Cost me 8M, was a 65k dps upgrade - went from struggling in MP2/3, to breezing through MP5.
While yes, dual wielding monks can do more dps, 2h does it for cheaper. http://us.battle.net/d3/en/profile/Ain-1847/hero/1014294
With what's currently on the AH I'd love to see someone push this character over 100k on an 8M budget. (For those who click this too late - I put my skorn on AH everytime I log for an obscene amount. stats are: 484 dex, 193% chd, +100% chd gem, 70 vit, 1441 average dmg).
If someone actually buys it for 200M(lol) I plan to go DW, but to match this in DW You'd need a pair of 1230 damage weapons, with 220 dex each, 2 open sockets, 50% crit hit damage. And that's just to MATCH it. Would probably want more chd.. Life steal on one of them...etc... Sure, DW can be better - but is it practical?

A very good idea. I hope others read and learn what you do.

Not sure if I'd play it, personally - but there are a handful of players out there.
And that monk would be farming even quicker dual wielding instead.
