Just looking for some opinions on where to go from here for survivability.
I'm at 42k unbuffed dps.
39k life
771 resists
750 LoH
I upgraded my chest piece and I lost about 7k life. Ever since that time, I'm noticing a few more deaths than I like (hello molten mobs that run away all the time) and I want to see what opinions are in where I should compensate.
I know the general rule of thumb to be at 700 resists and 40k life, but I'm wondering if another 300 to 400 LoH will make the difference, of just look to gain back the vitality that I lost.
I'm implementing life regen into my gear and have been very happy with the result. Life Regen becomes quite a cheap alternative to excessive LoH. Essentially, Regen behaves just like LoH during combat. As of now, I have almost 1k regen to embellish my paltry 500 LoH. I would look hard at your gear and find a few pieces that you could replace to add both vita and regen.
Next, I would direct you toward armor and DODGE. These two areas are key to survivability and best of all, armor and block can be greatly buffed through your skill bar as opposed to having to shell out big bucks.
I created it as an engine to spam Ex-Palm. However, since you're having serious issues with survivability, switch out Mantra of Healing for Evasion/Hard Target.
Look toward spirit regen to help with your survivability.
Spirit Regen? Yes....think about how it affects all phases of your Monk in combat. If you can't keep your spirit up, you can't function. The faster you kill, the better your odds of surviving. The more regen you have, the faster you kill, the more you can spam your Mantra for the initial cast bonus.
You can get socketed fists with spirit regen and good dps for relativly cheap (2-5mm).
If you have any questions or wish to do some runs and exchange some ideas in-game, feel free to add me and we could try and work out any issues you're having.

To raise your survivablity, raise your dps. Do not buy into the whole "tanking" mindset. People fail to realize how important DPS is. And to the above poster, block does not work without a shield, so forget about that. Though melee or ranged damage reduction % can be very useful.
If you watch monk streamers and listen to what good players have to say, you will see a pattern. Very high dps, no dying, and not that much hp, resist, or LoH. I have zero LoH, and I don't recommend regen either. 700 RA should be enough, so get your crit chance and crit dmg weapons and you should be fine. Once your dps gets higher you should be killing elites with 1 serenity followed by SSS. The general pattern for players is that they start out stacking too much resist and LoH, and slowly gain dps and drop it. So if you can afford it, drop all that gear and go for damage. Work on your crit chance, use cyclone and thunderclap. It's the cookie cutter end game monk build, but it simply is the best until they patch the monk's skills.
I think just the other day listening to Alkaizer on his stream he was saying the same thing, people really need to get their dps higher, it's extremely important since you wont need to survive long if everything dies right away.
Another solution is life steal, which works very well once your dps gets up to 70k or higher, since tornados on cyclone proc it. You only need 2.5% to see it heal you back up.
spirit regen shouldn't be needed at all for spamming mantra, since Thunder Clap has AOE and hits twice per swing.

Typo. I meant to suggest dodge, not block. Dodge is awesome for survivability, especially when garnered from Evasion as it can be spammed if you have the spirit regen.
But thanks for catching that, I goofed when typing (watching football).
Anywho...the build I linked to has a tanky feel but deals out massive AoE dps. You are correct in that killing faster = survivability.
spirit regen shouldn't be needed at all for spamming mantra, since Thunder Clap has AOE and hits twice per swing.
Spirit regen is soooo underestimated. What you just said was true before 1.04. Now, spirit spenders are viable and in order to be able to spam EP tags while repeatedly refreshing your mantra it is ABSOLUTELY CRUCIAL that you have sprit regen.
The issue with Thunder clap over a slower generator like Deadly Reach is that people get killed BECAUSE they use Thunderclap.
If you don't have great spirit regen, you can't generate spirit if you don't hit with your generator attack. So.....what people with FoT/Thunderclap end up doing is they teleport right back into those horrid plagued/molten/desecrator pools. You cannot strike with thunderclap without teleporting right into trouble.
Deadly Reach also offers the choice of either a great dps boost or a great armor boost.
If you watch monk streamers and listen to what good players have to say.....
What they should be saying is that their weapons cost 100 million gold.
Work on your crit chance, use cyclone and thunderclap. It's the cookie cutter end game monk build, but it simply is the best until they patch the monk's skills.
Until they patch Monk skills? They just buffed the fuck out of crucial Monk dps skills. That nado build is sooooo 1.03 and outdated. There are so many WoL/SSS/EP builds out now that stomp that tired old nado build into the dirt.
I think just the other day listening to Alkaizer on his stream he was saying the same thing, people really need to get their dps higher, it's extremely important since you wont need to survive long if everything dies right away.
Again, these guys are ripping out insane dps because they have extremely expensive Crit gear and top-shelf weapons. You cannot dish out 75k base dps with your Monk unless you're rich as shit.
Another solution is life steal, which works very well once your dps gets up to 70k or higher, since tornados on cyclone proc it. You only need 2.5% to see it heal you back up.
.....and again, you're talking WAY over most peoples abilities to purchase gear to reach that mark of 70k DPS. You have to accept that if you cannot afford to put gear on your Monk that stabs out 60-80k dps you must focus on builds that buff survivability AND mass dps.
Raising you block rate and armor is free. Adding extreme AoE dps is free. Use your skills wisely and do not think that cookie cutter nado build will accomplish this for you.
I too feel like 60/70k dps is the way to go. @Ruksak; I like the build and I think its a great idea, but I like the sweeping winds build too much really to change. Its just how I'm used to the monk. Gearing to go beyond the mid 40k mark for DPS is going to obviously tough and expensive. I'm sure that's everyone's problem- if you refuse to use the RMAH
I've been looking at a new ring to replace my second - with crit and IAS. Also an ammy to add in IAS. Its just losing that much vit on either the ring or the ammy is going to hurt...
Just off the cuff, Guardians Path (paasive) is something you should look into as a replacement for Resolve. Resolve doesn't affect the worst dps dealers (ground affixes) and only affects enemies you've dealt damage too. A far better option IMO is to grab that +15% dodge from Guardians Path. Try it and see how it feels for ya.
IMO those slow ass weapons are helping to kill you as well. When you have the means, look into fist weapons.
Also, for shits and giggles, experiment with what it feels like to have 6-7 spirit regeneration. Just load up whatever skills and gear you need and take a stab at a few mobs and get a feel for what high SR feels like. Though your build is really short on spirit spenders.
I strongly encourage you to just try, just once, try the build I linked to. It really requires that you have DW fists with spirit regen, so perhaps you may not be able to hit the regen break-point of at least 6 in which you'll see your build driving on a much faster engine. . You will feel like you're blasting out WAAAAY more dps than you actually have. I promise you, that build is sick when executed properly.
I used the nado build (very similar to what you're using) up until 1.04. I too do not like changing builds. BUT....I'm tellin ya, with EP and SSS you'll rip through many elite packs before they can kill you.
Just for experiment; Switch out Resolve for the Guardian's Path passive. Switch out BoH (I know it's hard to switch out that heal after using it so long but trust me) for exploding palm/flesh is weak. See how it works for ya. I got a feeling that the first time you blow up 30 enemies at once you'll start leaning away from the nado build.
Resolve is good since it procs off Sweeping Wind, but Guardian's Path is also very good. I find myself switching between those 2 as well as Fleet Footed for breaking the move speed cap.
And I do 80k unbuffed dps, and havent spent any money on the RMAH nor am I rich as shit. :[
I crit for 200k, tornados crit for 40k. Damage wise cyclone is still king. And thunder clap still has the highest proc coefficient + double crits per hit. I also found both of my weapons. Though they are worth over 100m combined for sure. But in the end if you don't have that gear you will need to use other stuff, and Keen Eye is certainly good.
U meant dodge ruksak? Makes more sense. Dodge is great. But again dps will make all of that pretty trivial. Depends on where you are at, and your budget of course.
I've tried spirit regen builds and its a lot of fun, just not enough damage for me compared to classic cyclone + SSS. SSS: Fulminating Onslaught is insane now with high crit chance and crit damage. I definitely no longer die using Thunder Clap, though it was an issue for me back when my dps was lower. When I first was starting out I used Keen Eye as well, so it may be a good choice for him if he can't get his dps up for now. There is nothing wrong with Keen Eye, it's actually a lot of fun. I still love it.
