I came up with a burst build that I would try on elites onces 1.04 comes out. It relies on using all of the monk's +%damage modifiers and quickly bursting elites down with SSS and EP.
If we assume one of the mobs die, you also get 30% of their HP in damage as a bonus from EP.
Now I know this build isn't very "deep" (anyone can go to the calculator and pick out all of the +%damage mods and stack them) but it seems like it could work. With 1-2 seconds of immunity from SSS and 4 seconds from Serenity, you have enough time to burst at least one (if not all) of the elites down.

I think I would have dropped BoH and went with FoT and combination strike. In fact. I currently run FoT:TC, DR- FS, SW-C, BoH-BW, S-Asc,MoC-O. With OWE,StI, and Combination strike
I planned to drop BoH-BW for SSS-FO. I feel like it's something I have to try rather than math out though, especially since we don't know the average HP of elites atm.
The 2 hand build I will try will probably be something like MoC-O, XP-tFiW, SSS-FO, S-Asc, X
I'll have to mess with generators but leaning towards FoT:Q
I'm also not sure about X because I'll probably try Sweeping winds, a 2nd generator and of course the obvious BoH-BW.
I plan on dropping OWE in the coming weeks though and I also think there's potential with explosive light, perhaps with SW or maybe SSS.
I honestly don't use Fulminating Onslaught. I use Sudden Assault rune, as a combination teleport, brief invuln, and the ability to catch one enemy in an absolutely whithering assault if I catch them alone. Works wonders on all of those annoying runners, plus enemies like the Fallen Angels which routinely drift away from groups. Not to mention it gets you outside of movement-restricting packs and can be used to dodge sentries/mortars/etc.

I'm with you PsyBomb. It is also more powerful for Boss fights. A single SSS with SA instantly took inferno phase 2 Belial to Phase 3 with my monk.

The way it would work is like this:
Use Deadly Reach (18%) -> Breath of Heaven (15%) -> Exploding Palm (12%) -> MoC Overawe (48%) -> SSS runed with Fulminating Onslaught
Assuming you are facing a pack of three elites which are within 7 yards of each other, you would do
254% [SSS FO weapon DMG] * 7 [# of strikes] * 3 [# of elites] * 1.18 * 1.15 * 1.12 * 1.48 = 11998% weapon DMG
