I've been hunting around for some new weapons from my 720 and 740 DPS ones with 700/800 LoH respectively to a higher DPS equivalent. Now I came across some nice fist weapons with 40+ life per spirit spent (LPSS) with open sockets and 900+ DPS whilst MFing.
Now the question is, has anyone tested or theory crafted using LPSS over LoH on say 1 of your weapons? Or possibly both? With how we spam our mantra pretty much as soon as the 3 second buff drops and any other thing (blind/sweeping wind/heal/bubble) and get health back per spirit spent from our passive, wouldn't stacking some more LPSS make effectively each of our abilities a solid heal when partnered with the passive that does the same (think it's 60ish LPSS)?
Basic math tells me if you have 2 40 LPSS weapons and Trascendence, every Mantra you pop will heal you for ~7.1k and every BoH/Blazing Wrath for ~9.7k - ~10.9k.
Basic difference is LoH doesn't require spending spirit to heal you, but as you said, LPSS makes it so every single one of your spirit spender is a significant heal. With the example above, a single SW should heal you for ~10.6k. So in essence, BoH isn't a healer anymore, just there for the buff, Serenity with Peaceful Repose becomes redundant and so on and so forth.
I wouldn't recommend skipping LoH to make LPSS work, especially with FoT proc'ing the shit out of it. Also, to make LPSS work effectively, you need to go away from Thunderclap and think about Quickening or another spirit generating rune.
Been trying to figure out a ratio of LoH:LPSS but work doesn't want me to.
All in all, dropping your 700 LoH weapon and testing the 40 LPSS one should show how effective the usage of both is. Also, since it has a socket, you can just slot in an amethyst for some LoH.
yeah I'm going to do some testing over the next few days to get a decent sample size and make my decision from that. The bonus is one of the fist weapons has 30 LPSS and 900 LoH with vit i found out (i must of banked it and not looked at it too much due to playing my DH alot lately and forgotten the stats) so it had the 'passive' heal via LoH nad the active heal from LPSS. Another has life steal (2.9%....crap stat I know but if it's there already and not taking up a slot for a better stat cos the weapon has vit/dex/crit/socket/lpss + life steal) so ill test that out too.
Was about to test before but servers went down so sad panda
I currently use a 500dmg sword that has 900 LOH. My other weap is a close to 900dmg, with 63 LPSS and 2.1% Lifesteal. My helm has 20 LPSS (I want to find higher). Currently at 10k dmg DWing. Trading for Gaurdianship (More dodge) instead of Trancesendence. With this set up, it's a blast for act 1/2 having close to 59% dodge if I remember right. 100 LPSS heal almost, and 900 LOH.
Now if I go to Act 3/4 then I have to put my shield on, and lose that dmg to live longer. =p Depending on the people in the game, (barb / monk) I might lose the shield cause of buffs. But when playing soloing, the shield is required. =(
I've played around a bit with LPSS, and I just don't find it effective, not with the low values found on gear. Spirit generation isn't high enough even while dual wielding and using FoT. Maybe it was different before the haste nerf in 1.03.
A basic amount of LoH can easily give you back 2-3k health per second (with FoT - Thunderclap). LPSS simply can't match that.

True it can't match it in a 1v1 tank/spank fight, but if you think about it and you end up having a decent dodge %, how much LoH could be wasted theoretically, whereas with LPSS you can effectively control the heals and give yourself burst healing when needed. Also, LoH doesn't help when you're kiting, whereas with LPSS if you have some spirit you can drop yourself a quick burst heal almost equal to a potion.
It's an interesting idea and could potentially be quite viable if you gear/spec for it.
Using spirit on crit skills makes the calculation a bit more complicated, but really they are not so difficult to compare.
For the OP's case of 700 LoH vs 40 LpSS:
Every hit generates 6 spirit = a potential heal of 240
vs every hit healing you for 700.
Sorry, no contest.
