Looking through and reading all the inferno guides almost every single monk uses the same build of 3 defense skills even the really well geared people unless i missed some threads. I was able to make it all the way through to azmo in hell diffculty before having to go with the same defense build berfore that i used http://us.battle.net...gijh!dYU!ZcYZYc
at anytime does a non defensive build ever become more viable or are you currently limited to being defensive to farm inferno
Offensive more viable? No. Melee classes have to have defensive stats in order to survive in Inferno. With that said, once you farm up a bit you can totally switch to more offensive skills as you slowly gain more gear. I've not gotten a lot of upgrades from drops myself, just a weapon and a ring recently. But this is where Trade comes in handy. I sell gear for 10mil - I buy gear for 10 mil. And so we all get better.
Currently farming A2 offensively and progressing in A3 defensively.
The thing is those three defensive skills do typically give us a bit off offense too. Most people seem to take the +15% Damage on Breath of Heaven, which is steady damage bump to all damage, and many take Faith in the Light for Blinding flash, which is a burst of +30% damage. Serenity is more purely defensive, but lets us stand and actually concentrate on hitting things! Add a mantra, spirit generator and your choice of Sweeping Wind or Mystic Ally and you have most every inferno monk build there is.
I see those two defensive skills as adding so much to my damage for so little spirit spent that dropping them for more spirit spending abilities may, counter intuitively, drop my overall damage.
