I see almost every monk talk about FoT Thunderclap runed and I cant figure out why it is more appealing then WotHF Fists of Fury(or Windforce Flurry from a pure dps standpoint). From what I can tell WotHF has a much larger aoe, more dmg, seems that the rapid fist attack attack do LoH per target(not confirmed) and seem to cause the mob to be interrupted like I see ppl talking bout thunderclap, also WotHF FoF seems to do the short range teleport like Thunderclap. So can someone please enlighten me as to why FoT Thunderclap > WotHF I must be missing something here.
The build I use isnt very spirit dependent and my IAS is prob lower then most act 3-4 inferno monks, I don't pretend to even be great(can farm act 1 inferno, tho that isnt special), but I just cant see what I am missing from FoT so can someone please tell me why so many monks use and praise it? I tried using it and it seems lackluster compared to WotHF, though I got a feeling that might have to do with my attack speed which is only 1.54
wothf is attacks stuff and turns you in all directions. If you want to attack a group head on, hammer dudes and keep them locked down. fot does that, if you have a bee behind you, the knockback might end up hitting the bee and hammers smashing your face.
Also, if I recall correctly Fist of Thunder is 140% of your attacks per second, while the others are 110% of your attacks per second. Don't know if that's still the case.
I believe FoT is 110% weapon dmg, and WotHF is the 140% one.
My problem with WotHF is that the AoE seems very unreliable (only on the third hit, sometimes doens't hit confirm properly).
Thunderclap adds +35% extra dmg (on main target) as well as the bonus atkspeed from FoT itself (which could be 5-15%, not sure on this one but it feels a lot faster), so that's why it feels better for me at least. A faster atkspeed also leads to a much improved spirit regeneration and "on hit" procs (life on hit, freeze/stun/fear), although this last part of it could be better on WotHF (not sure how it works for the 2nd hit there).
FoT attacks 20% faster, and at higher attack speed levels prevents anything but the fastest swinging mobs and elite packs from being able to hit you due to the small knock back on the third strike.
Every skill has a hidden proc coefficient that determines what percentage of your life on hit you get when using that skill.
FoT:TC has mediocre 75% coefficient but it procs off the cleave AND the punch, giving it an effective 375% coefficient over the 3 hit combo.
WotHF has a lousy coefficient unless you use the run that makes it apply holy damage over time. That rune gives you a 370% coefficient, but WotHF doesn't attack as fast as FoT, so you get less life per unit time. Plus, that rune isn't very good when you're maximizing attack speed, since dots are based on weapon damage range, not dps.
Thank you all for the information! I really appreciate it and can see why some people use it instead Once I get a bit more IAS I'll try it out again, again thanks for the explainations
