I've played through nightmare and so far I have discovered that you can NEVER EVER have enough health! Hah. I decided to get socketed single hand weapons and socket them with as much life steal as I could. Duel wielding for the +15% attack speed.
The result was pleasantly surprising. I've found that in most situations I can attack fast enough to generate A LOT of health. Typically enough to outlast whatever I am trying to kill.(The only thing that busts me is when I am frozen). It was pretty impressive to me considering how effective this idea was and the fact I haven't tried to "tune" the build yet.
Has anyone else tried this? I really like the way it plays so far, and would love to see some build ideas.
You don't. Amethyst gems in a weapon give +X life on hit. Like right now my mainhand has a flawless square amethyst, which gives +65 health on hit.
Can you honestly tell me that's worth it more than the same level gem of a Ruby (which gives straight up damage)? Also, I'm curious about HOW fast you attack, because obviously the faster the more valuable the Amethyst gem becomes in a weapon. I'm only at approx. 2 attacks per second now.

It's worth it if you're playing tank style in a party doing Inferno. Depending on other things, it may be worth it solo also if you find yourself losing tons of health.
I have a very specific question on this subject though for anyone that may know...
Does each hit on Way of the Hundred fists proc "life on hit"? I'm talking about the 7 "mini-hits" of the 2nd attack of the combo. I'm finding it hard to test well. My assumption is "yes", because if those "mini-hits" couldn't do stuff like that, then it's nothing but a gimick, but I believe it's there for cool things like this (especially with the Rune that makes it 10 mini hits instead of 7).

I was wondering this myself. The logical answer would be yes, but I'm not sure.

It does not. It considers all the mini-hits as 1 attack, which really sucks and is horribly worded. Even with the Way of the Hundred Fists I found it was best to stick to lightning punch.
