I'm not sure how my monk is going to be when the game goes live, but I voted healer. On paper, it looks like I should do well healing, be somewhat decent in dmg, and have a little defensive increase tossed in there.
i will be the ramming monk check my signature, i can consider him a damage reduction build right??
I was thinking about making a dodge build that would be able to deal damage every time he dodged an attack Using mantra of evasion with backlash, but the wording of the skill itself seems odd. It says "Successfully dodging an attack has a chance to create a burst of flame dealing 78% weapon damage." This turned me away from the skills because unlike every other skill it doesn't tell you the chance it has to cast, so i don't know whether is it a 50% chance to cast or a 10% chance to cast. hopefully someone else notices that blizzard should include the statistical information in backlash because its uncertain how valuable that skill really is.
Pure damage build for me! I feel like compared to the paladin, the monk has more DPS potential, but then again, I never really did a complete pally so I wouldn't know what I'm talking about :/
But then again, with the skill swapping feature, I could just switch my builds around as needed
I'd consider this build mixed. When I try to create builds, I like to try to pick skills that I think will complement each other in combat rather than solely focus on doing one thing really well. I know many will not agree that being a "jack of all trades but master of none" is not the way to go, but I think early on in my playing Diablo 3 I'd like to get a feel for what works best with my style of play before I commit to a build. Not that you really have to commit to much in D3 as it stands, but as we all know things will change between now and release anyway.
Good luck ot all in the contest. I don't have beta access, but I have my fingers crossed.
I'm really debating on how I will be playing my monk. Currently I'm going for a survival and burst dps build. From what I've seen as a monk is that we can be very versatile but need to care about getting up in the face of creeps. Also since the sneak peak of nightmare+ difficulties that blizzard released, I think health and spirit regen will be huge when we reach that difficulty. Only way to play hardcore is to play softcore

i think you can reflect more damage with a thorn monk, the good thing about your idea is that you avoid damage while in thorn you have to recieve that damage.
That feels more like a healing/avoidance build with 2 oh shit buttons
yeah i just noticed my build is a mix if different stuff, i have some damage reduction/avoidance/healing and an oh s#&% button but i didn't focus on one thing.
ps: i just noticed the build in my sig has two runes wrong both Mantra of healing and Blinding flash should be indigo (Boon of protection, Blinding echo)... but i am too lazy edit my sig
Defently dmg dealing dodger!!! the quad Ds... with a bad ass staff. But that is the beauty of Diablo 3 isn't it? Being able to play every kind of monk? I can't wait too master every role the monk can fill
I'm going to be playing along side my two brothers (Wiz & DH) so they will need some backup healing/damage mitter..
but this will be my HC build.. I bet my first SC run will be more damage dealer to get through it quicker..
My build changes weekly also lol. But what I have so far is go in with dashing strike or tempest rush golden rune ofc. Then, start with Way of the 100 fists and 3rd strike exploding palm golden rune. U do this on pack of monsters so u get the maximum sprit. 4 spirit for each monster hit. Then, after building up spirit this way, use Wave of light golden rune so u can spam it. For survivabilty, take mantra of retribution with alabaster for 30% reduced dmg and take resolve for more dmg reduction. Finally, have Earth ally for maximum hp increase. Lol i have this build in my head and try to improve it every night before i go to sleep

Greatmars is right. You would get a more damage out from a thorn monk and you could survive if you took a few skills to reduce the damage your opponents are doing. The only flaw I see with a thorn monk is tho that you do have to take damage. With all the damage decreasing skills tho you may be able to get away with it.
Dash around and spam crippling wave to reduce target damage. Use serenity as protection skill also self heal ability. Seven sided strike for cc. Mantra for group heal. Blinding flash combine with Indigo rune, I can blind a group of target then dash to next spot and blind again.
Passive skill will be mainly reduce enemy's damage and reduce damage taken from enemy during negative affect debuff. One with everything combine with Crimson Mantra of healing and proper gearing, should be able to boost resistance to very high point. Increase survive ability in later difficulty.
I said mixed/DD for my solo build, going for strong AoE potential to tear it up in PvM, with the ability to heal myself and allies for good endurance and survivability. Crippling Wave and Dash are there for getting away from sticky situations. Biggest sacrifice was having to ignore +dodge skills, I'm hoping the high damage and heals can make up for it though. I'm sure my build will totally change based on what classes/builds my 2 friends end up picking though, good synergy is key!

Going in, I want to be very mobile with super high dps.
But then again, with the skill swapping feature, I could just switch my builds around as needed
