For his deflecting shield and the twirl (crippling wave i think) which you can see on the D3 site, he uses his staff. Theres probably gonna be separate trees for staves/bos and bare-handed/fist weapons.
I don't know if you already have been talking abut this, so I'll just say it: Is it just me or does the monk use his fists even though he holds the staff or w/e? He transports with it in his hands, but when he is attacking, if you look closely, the "staff" is on the the monks back. I don't know, maybe that's because it's a work in progress or something but I still find it weird. Over and out
Edit: Just saw that you talked about some of this, but w/e
yes, he does
maybe the left button of mouse is punch and right button is his weapon... who knows?
but, i think, the staff and claws will not be used together. so... i prefer claws.

the dude who announced the monk said it, with his smoking, whisky drinking voice! "the MONK".. i thought it was awesome
I can not imagine the monk guarding the claw ever before the attack ... so I think the attack with every weapon is different. He will not put it off the claw to attack as it does with the staff. hopefully
I personally like the direction they are using for the Monk ... although in the video's, he's basically hitting so hard, he's shattering his enemies into nothing with tons of blood. A bit over the top if you ask me, but I can deal with it.
I will be using a Female Witch Doctor for my single player experience, and probably a Male Monk for my 1st online character. Or maybe the 5th class, but Im not sold yet.

in the 12 min vid he only uses the staff for those two skills, the rest of the time it is just for show, like he is overcompensating or something
it's clear that it's the paladin+assassin combined..
the chain/combo levels are extremely fun to use and offer you more strategy options. (always tried to get exploding palm 3rd level on the biggest mob for instance because it did a ce sort of thing based on life)
love the speed (you can use the seven sided strike and 100 fists skills to speed/teleport around even when there's not mobs around.
love a challenging class (they said it was a goal for the class)
anyway i'm sold, it will be my class for d3

they'll never see me coming.. life is a sequence of tragedies, inconsistent only by fleeting, elusive moments of pleasure,
serving only to ensure absolute vulnerability to the pain of their inevitable absence.
I still don't get in what way it is a Assassin/Paladin. Using holy magic is not enough. I would say a Assassin/Holy Magic Holy Magic alone doesn't make the Paladin...
what would then be the paladin?
You should be analyzing the Paladin as the guy who wears heavy armor ... however, the paladin is not it.
I don't think you can use the seven sides strike to teleport around effectively because I think it has a cooldown.
i didn't mean use it in rapid succession you can only use the speed versions of those two skills on every first chain level also.
however even with the cooldowns and those restrictions, i used seven sided strike a lot to speed ahead playing the demo. (also could be used to get out of rough situations which i will value greatly in hardcore mode)

They also have concept art for fist weapons on the monk page on the Diablo 3 site.

No... when he's using skills it moves to his back.

You can clearly see it on both of them when they use skills. ( I take the part about the wizard back, I just rewatched and she doesn't do it. )

So have his weapons.
I'll have to wait until the game arrives to decide what weapons to use, though

And the seven sided strike or whatever it's called, can you do that twice in a row?

Paladin = Holy "magic" + Buff in D2.
