Bruce Lee doesn't do magic. This monk gots some neat tricks.
His most powerful ability better be a kamehameha.
I'm not sure I'm happy that they are going with the monk, but I like what they are doing with it. Its not just another skull bashing character (by that I mean like the Barbarian), and its definitively more interesting than the Assassin.
can you point out how his game play is any different too any other monk in other games, what does the diablo monk do (gameplay) that is so different that you think he is unique.
When I usually think 'Monk' I think 'healing class' but the guy in D3 seems to have no healing spells (or a very limited amount). He seems more like the Assassin mixed with some Dragon Ball Z character than anything. Maybe a bit like those characters off Avatar: The Last Airbender too haha.
I don't really mind him. I am not going to play him in all likelihood since there is a very narrow category of classes I like playing in any game and he does not fit in it. He's just as generic as every other character in the game so far, even when the issue of the name is removed, compared to other classes and characters in other games. What I do think, however, based on what many people have already said and what I saw (if I were in to this kind of character), is that he obviously looks very fun to play, and that's all that matters, here. This isn't supposed to be some high-end literature where the characters must be very distinct, unique, and developed. It's a game and it just needs to be fun. If you don't think you'll enjoy a character, don't play it. That's why they offer a wide range of characters- to accommodate varying tastes. Of course not everyone is going to enjoy or play all of the characters that much (if at all)- that's why they give a good many options.
when it was very fist announced i hated the idea....gameplay has now made it my favorite class..no matter what the last class is monk is ma number one love the pace of his fighting

No matter what else gets thrown into other classes, I'll always need a Barbarian around to Whirlwind now and then ;). I especially love the upgraded whirlwind they showed during the panel... so much blood spray!
I still don't get why you expected originality when the other classes = Wizard and Barbarian. Wizard is the most unimaginative thing ever. The skills each class has, however, seem to be pretty original.
Seems to be pretty unique to me compared with the other 3 classes - much faster than the Barbarian but still fragile. Has combo moves which i'm pretty sure the Barb does not have and also uses Holy Magic..
It's like saying the Pally, Assassin and Barb in D2 were the same just because they were both melee characters.
I do agree that they could've done something a bit more creative and unique, but eh. The videos I have seen of the Monk have been badass. The combo system is unlike anything we saw in Diablo 2.
each class offers a unique and original game play style that suits what ever game-play style you like
and when they made the necromancer they succeeded in making another class the pet class that was unique in game play etc
but how is this monk unique in game-play? with the money blizzard has and the the new engine they use i assumed the monk would have a radically different game play style but he doesn't.
the uniqueness i am talking about is the same they did with a necromancer they made game play style so perfect there was no way of making it better.
Not sure if you've seen the panel discussion, if you haven't go check it on youtube before it gets taken down. What they reveal about the monk class makes it seem pretty darn awesome. Something doesn't have to be "unique" to be a solid class thats fun to play.
I'm not sure why some people have an obsession with "unique" but you can't reinvent the wheel every day and expect to not end up with something round at the end of most days. The monk has just enough individuality from what I've seen to really set it apart. In the panel they talk about several moves that have 3 stages, but you can mix & match the stages from different skills. That is something straight out of sidescreen fighting games, but it is thrown into a rpg/action game and I think its a terrific idea. Don't like the style? Play a different class.
Maybe blizz will break the mold with the fifth class, who knows. Every class doesn't have to groundbreaking, they just have to be fun to play, cool to look at and are distinguisable from other classes within that game.

also IMO its makes the barb look bad as he the character who kills things the slowest and barely any fancy skills.

This is hands down the best video I have seen of Diablo 3 gameplay. It's just awesomely chaotic.
enjoy it
