We know the Monk has claw-class weapons, can use a shield, a sword, and has battle staves. I'm also guessing we can use most other weapon types (of course not the restricted ones). Maybe you prefer none of these and will use something really odd like a huge maul. It's up to you!
This is basically the same thing, but with a poll for some hard data at a glance. Chose your primary weapon. As far as we know some weapon types may be quicker, deal more max damage than average damage (potentially useful for crits), have different attribute bonuses, or that we'll use whatever we find that's the best. But, chose the weapon you would enjoy using the most. That which fits your playstyle and ideas of a Monk character.
EDIT 9/11/11: Added options for dual-wielding two 1H weapons, now that we've got new info. confirming you can do so. However, our current knowledge also suggests that the monk can't use any 2H weapons other than Staves. I'll keep the 2-handers there for reference purposes, though.

The final test of the Serpent's Form takes place in "The Pit of 12 Vipers." The initiates are not told about the 13th.
Bare fists would be interesting but I voted dual fists instead since I imagine that will be more visually appealing. But at some point I will be sure to try a staff!
Voted dual fists since the +crit passive for dual wielding looks to be one of the biggest DPS increases available. But the weapon type itself doesn't matter, just the dual wield (assuming the base DPS is competitive with 2h ofc).
Sadly I think Blizzard hasn't included this weapon type, probably because it's not actually a fighting weapon. Imagine if Nunchaku had blades... you'd slice yourself. They're just for training: honing reflexes and dexterity.
EDIT: Oops, I lied. They are a fighting weapon, it's just that the original and historical martial art involving fighting is rarely practiced.

This is what I was thinking too. It's going to be hard, unless some passives are altered or weapons are balanced correcty, for people to overcome that bonus with other weapon types.
My personal image of a monk is that he's badass enough to not need weapons at all, but not equpping weapons will make you lose out on stats. Fist weapons is in my opinion the closest thing to being barehanded out of the available alternatives so I voted for that.
Edit: Might try out a staff later on. Somehow the idea of using one has started to grow on me...
I was thinking about something like this. It would be interesting if there was a passive that amplified your damage (or gave you bonuses akin to that of wielding weapons) if you weren't wielding weapons. However it's odd to imagine not using weapons at all. I can understand not using a Staff or Sword, but fist weapons can be something as simple as small wrist spikes or jagged mtal bars along the forearm. They hardly hinder movement and amplify your damage/blocking power considerably.
I'd love to use bare hands, but I'd really prefer something like tonfa. I think claw weapons are probably the closest that you can get to that though.
I would consider the Tonfa fist weapons, yes. I think from D2 we may be a little partial to what we picture as "fist weapons." The Tonfa are basically extensions of the fist and forearm; they, like many other fist weapons, have a striking potential (the small part on Tonfa, the blade or claw on other weapons) and a blocking potential with a bar across the forearm. The only weapons I would consider to cross the line between fist weapons and their own weapon type are Kama ("Japanese sickles").

Wish they had meteor hammer as an option, similar to how jet li uses a fire hose as a weapon or Jackie chan. But I'll go for maul, because seeing a monk fly around screen , seven sided strike style, with a maul will be barb blowing rape whistle supper fun time imo. But I'm sure end game item versions of claws will have more class benefits than a big bad maul.
I hope those who chose "no weapons" realize you're gimping yourself. Not utilizing weapons means you're not getting any bonuses and doing less damage. It's like not wearing chest armor, or a helm, or a ring, except worse because you're a melee class. I haven't seen a trait (passives skills in actuality, but I call them traits because that's what they were originally) that buffs you for not using weapons, and even if it existed it would have to be a very substantial buff. Furthermore using this trait would take up one of your passive slots so you'd be limited to 2 other traits, which could be another gimp if the weaponless trait wasn't good enough.
I guess it's one of those Challenge Accepted things
I agree that this would be awesome, but as far as we know, only the Barbarian can dual-wield swords, axes, etc. I would definitely be completely supportive of giving the Monk the ability to dual-wield small one-handed swords (think Cryptic Sword of Diablo II), perhaps even a specific sword weapon class for the Monk.

Just delete them^^ Can you wipe a Poll? Oh and the Monk can use 2H Weapons... Combat Staffs (they are Monk specific) and probably 2H Polearms... but I'm waiting for confirmation on the 2H Polearms. Also there are no 2H Spears they are 1H Weapons you can even dualwield them <_<
No, I'll leave them. It shows that people did want to use Glaives and big Axes and whatnot. And I won't wipe the poll either.
Yes, they can use Staffs. I forgot to exclude that from my "no 2Handers" statement. Perhaps polearms, but I haven't encountered any video of a beta player equipping one.

Altho I like dual claws, I might have to try this out. I'll scrap it if it makes him too slow tho.

I am actually indiffirent to the idea this playstyle will be good/supported or not. It just feels right.
And a sudden plunge in the sullen swell. Ten fathoms deep on the road to hell...
