I know that movement speed has a 25% cap. Is there an AS cap? I'm really enjoying this IAS build I'm putting together but before I take it too far I want to make sure that I'm gearing as efficiently as possible (I don't want to sacrifice too much dmg for IAS if there is no need). I know that the "new thing" is 33% IAS max but I've got decent resource regen so over-spending doesn't present too much of an issue.
There's no IAS cap, other than a good balance (IAS vs other DPS stats; IAS vs the resources you actually have). What's the "new thing" with 33% IAS? Never heard of that, fill me in.
I thought I heard that keeping 33% IAS prevents over-spending and peaks taeguk proc efficiency via sweeping wind? (citation needed). To be honest, I like other folks' theorycrafting, but at the end of the day I just play the way I like. i picked up the Istvan's sword set last week and I'm trying to max out an IAS build on my monk
I tried to do the math but don't know how. We only know that you worst case spend up to 104 spirit per second (6.6% RCR, spamming WoL only, plus SW refresh with numlock). You can't generate that... but then there's also Exploding Palm which costs less, there's Air Ally which depends on your CDR, there's Epiphany downtime (you sacrifice too much DPS if you go for 100% uptime at 75% CDR), and you'll have to move from time to time. If you run Blinding Flash it gets even more complicated.
Anyways, regarding high APS setup: I tried that, but the problem is that all interesting/useful spells for monk require high CDR to be useful, and you can't get both high CDR and APS. CDR, RCR, APS are all competing stats and you kind of have to make your choice, and currently it seems that high CDR builds are dominating and winning over high APS builds (and high RCR builds are mostly interesting for Tempest Rush, I think). But maybe it'll change if people do some more tests? Who knows. To be honest, you *can* go for 3-4 APS on a monk but it'll kill your wrist, because it'll be like the old Mantra spam days. I think even the "new" SWK monk is still quite heavy on your wrist, but high APS builds are just an entirely different story - you need a macro or finger muscles out of steel. Good luck.
This post was not originally intended to be class specific - I just felt like using my monk as an example. I played with IAS back in the old DH breakpoint days too, but its just never been clear to me how many APS you can really achieve. On my monk, I've found that with high aps and a decent generator you can regen spirit really quickly and dump WoL. I have the 4-piece SWK, run SW and Crippling wave - Mangle for spirit gen, Cyclone Strike - Implosion and WoL for the clone proc. Fourth slot is for circular breathing - i do still spam my mantra (old habits die hard). I still have some gear/work to complete this build but so far I'm convinced this could fill a niche for people who are into dual-wield.
Thanks for your input, I don't post on the forums often, but I read a lot and its nice to get feedback
Just to get this out of the way - there *is* no IAS cap ;-)
There are breakpoints (for wizard Disintegrate, for example) or "reasonable maximum amounts of IAS" (don't run out of resource), but there's no hard cap.
@OP: If you want to talk about it non-class specific:
Monk we started discussing in this thread.
Crusader is a very similar issue - more IAS is awesome, but you need to get the wrath.
Barbs usually consider IAS as the endgame build is still FC with Raekor's and other stats are just much more important, so no one goes for IAS.
WD: Jade doesn't want any IAS, only increases animation but not DPS; for Carnevil/pet builds you can never have enough IAS.
DH: If you don't have a 0dog WD with legacy gear you're limited by your hatred, so IAS is not *that* useful; if you have one of those elusive WDs, IAS is awesome.
Wizard: Only increases Blizzard's animation speed and not damage, so not that useful - but since it was changed to affect all Hydras it's actually quite useful for wizards. If you're running Disintegrate, watch the breakpoints.
(MY) TL;DR across all classes: for monk, crusader, and wizard, IAS is nice to have. Only pet WDs and DHs in groups with 0dog WDs "go crazy" on IAS and stack it to the max - otherwise, IAS is not the #1 stat in current endgame gearing.
Some people did the math on max attack speeds... I think Quin or Weng said that the max for monks is 10 APS or so. I got my Roland Crusader to 6 at some point. You can go crazy with APS if you want, and there's no cap, but there's a limit to its usefulness.
I know that some of this stuff is pretty basic, so I appreciate you indulging me. Diablo has been the only game I play, and most likely, the only game I will ever play. I only get an hour or 2 (max) a night, so since I can't farm gear like many I try to make the most of what I get.
Thanks
