The damage range of the weapon (below the big DPS number) is where the damage comes from. The higher the damage range is, the more damage per resource you'll get. But because that usually comes from a slower weapon, you'll regenerate resource slower, and any sort of on - hit proc will happen less. Also, if you are using a higher resource costing attack, and / or cooldowns, a higher damage range weapon will yield more damage per attack.
If you go with a faster weapon which usually results in a lower damage range, you'll be able to utilize on hit procs more, regenerate resource faster and attacking faster has a combat advantage of being able to move more.
If you want to test your actual damage (since I wouldn't recommend only using your sheet DPS as a barometer), what a lot of people do is go to the boss Ghom in act 3, and time yourself on how long it takes you to kill him, and divide that against his total HP. This is actually a good method to determine which skill / gear setup is better as well.
Edit; And yes, the DPS of a weapon already takes into account attack speed, and any +% damage on the weapon itself.
It all depends on what build you are using. If you have a build that focuses on a lot of fast attack using your primary, then fast weapon will be preferable such as 1-hand crossbow, 2-handed bow but if you are using a lot of resource spenders or sentry built i.e. procing cluster arrow etc. a slow weapon such as 2-handed crossbow will deal much more dmg. So kridershot and calamity while rare and people rave it being awesome, it might not fit into your build. A sentry build will do more dmg use a strong hellrack, buriza, or even a basic manticore vs calamity/kridershot per attack. As above posts have mentioned, experiment and see which one works best.

How can I tell if other two hand bows and crossbows + quiver I come across do more/less DPS than my current dual hand crossbows?
Is a weapon with a higher DPS always better? Does this DPS already account for attack speed? I know the DPS does not calculate gems.
