So I was done with the campaign on hard and was doing a mix of hard/expert adventure at 66 no problem (save for the odd evil elite pack). Then I tag along with someone and hit 70 pretty quick. I party with them for awhile longer and get some basic gear. I hop back to solo and get almost insta-killed. Drop difficulty to hard and notice that it takes longer than it used to to kill trash mobs and elites suddenly pose more of a risk. Even on normal an unfortunate pack of elites can be dangerous to me. I asked around and the only info I could get was that my gear was abysmal.
Any tips or suggestions or what have you that anyone has would be GREAT. I have no idea what I should be doing to "improve" my gear. I almost never got drops with sockets, enchanting gear is almost impossible due to how many times I often have to re-enchant and the drop on death's breath, I only have Shen at level 10 and I don't even really know what I should be looking for in gear to begin with. I've seen people mention trying to get X legendary or Y legendary but I'm not even sure how to get any specific legends. So basically any and all input/general directions would be a huge help. I'm just not sure what I should be doing in-game and have no idea at all what to do gear-wise. Sorry I'm such a scrub >_<
No socket in your weapon, immediate huge dps loss from no emerald. More vitality than dex, absolutely no crit, crit hit damage, or attack speed, no fire/physical % damage for your build (1 item with the affix does not count as a real amount). Get these (you have yellows, they come on legs, play normals and grind some quick bounty legs) and you'll be fine. You're able to cheese toughness requirements a little with Smoke Screen too, so just remember to build up that dps through secondaries after DEX.
Pretty much, do normal, farm Bounties, get the caches. Upon getting, lets say 30 caches (About 3 hours of gameplay), you should have gotten 5-10 legendaries and about 500 rares.
Now, for stats... You have more toughness unbuffed then my Wizard does buffed while farming T2, so your toughness is good. As for damage, the best way to increase your damage output is 1) Get a gem socket, put a emerald in it (huge boost right there), 2) Look for pieces that have 3 of the 5: Dexterity, Crit Chance, Crit Damage, +damage%( to a skill you use, or a damage type you use, fire/ice/poison ect), Attack Speed.
For Paragon levels, put Core into Movement Speed until you have 25% movement speed, Damage into either Crit Damage or Attack speed, depending on your gear (If you have more then 20% crit chance, put it into crit damage, otherwise attack speed). Defense, I would recommend Resist All since you are a DH. Utility is w/e you want.
As you acquire upgrades, continue to up your difficulty until you hit a point that normal trash packs are taking around 10 seconds to clear and champs are taking 30 seconds to clear.
Yeeaaah I'm pretty great for coming up with that build, huh? Nah jk. A little while after I posted a friend directed me to your "idiot's guide" which I sorely needed. The build gave me a dramatic boost in survivability and damage, so thanks for that! I'm also really enjoying it. Gonna be even better if I ever get that legendary chest that summons 3 wolves and 4 pieces of the set that gives ALL animal companions at once
Thanks for the input. I haven't gotten any even remotely decent socketed drops but I'll keep looking. And the 3 legends I've gotten so far have been rather...subpar. 2 bracers and an amulet, all of which have been a decent amount weaker than everything else I've had equipped and/or found. I'll keep going on bounties/rifts for now. Any chance you could point out good benchmarks for everything?

I really like your build though
