After trying to make my way through Inferno with both a DH and a Barb, with not much success I might add, I've come to the conclusion that I just don't have enough Gold to play this game properly.
I haven't really had much luck with drops or AH thus I've been stuck with gear that kept my DH in Act2 and Barb in Act3 (both getting beaten badly from the very beginning).
As a result I've decided to try a different strategy to be able to progress. Farm some Gold!
I decided to use the DH for this and focused on the following 2 stats:
Gold Find & Pickup Radius
After making and spending some Gold I've gotten up to a point where I've maxed out my Gold Find (300%) and Pickup Radius (56). My movement speed is at 12% btw.
I'm using this build to farm Crypt of the Ancients (Hell) at the moment and it is going reasonably well. I'm making in the region of 400k Gold per hour (although I still have to confirm this).
Is this an efficient way to go about it? Should I rather be farming a different area or different difficulty?
What recommendations do you have for me to make some Gold so that I can buy some gear to take on Inferno?
For what its worth I'm at 4.5k Armor and 11.3k DPS at the moment. 21.6k Life with virtually no Resist.
10 mill gold =$2.5 save yourself the frustration of farming for sooooo long.
While that might be true, it would prefer to play the game instead of pay the game (smiley face is a URL?)
I'm just looking to play it as efficiently as possible.
Btw, I'm on the EU server. That price seems exceptionally low from what I know about Gold prices (which is very little I will admit)
RMAH pricing was at ~1.5€ last I checked (15€ for 10mG)
On the BattleNet forum I see MMOVOO ads for 0.86€ (8.6€ for 10mG)
I would say keep doing what you're doing. Imo farming is mostly about what's the least tedious for you, and if this works keep at it. Then as your gear improves, move up to more difficult stuff and do the same thing for faster profit Happy hunting!
I imagine as I go up in Paragon levels I can start dropping GF gear and replacing it with better gear to move up to more profitable areas. This will take a lot of time of course, especially considering I'm currently on Hell. (just hit Paragon 2)
Not to be mean but your doing it wrong, this game isn't about farming drops it's about farming the AH till you find cheap awesome gear thought everyone knew that?? (sorry had to remove this because of URL restrictions)
No seriously though this game's RNG is abysmal at best it's will be awesome for some and utter crap for others RNG is a cruel mistress. Play the game enjoy it scan AH for cheap upgrades it's what I did and I got to act 3 on my DH relatively easilly, No imba gear hear just cheap stuff off AH and things I find, Once bought a 934dps Xbow with 280 dex 280 str and 50% crit for 150k and that weap I only replaced just recently so it's possible with not so awesome gear, YOU CAN DO IT.
I'm always on the lookout for a bargain buy at the AH. Either to use or to sell. Selling things on the AH is an even slower and tedious way of making Gold for me though. I'm unable to sell the majority of the things that I pick up (ilvl61+) and the bargains that I resell generally don't make me that much profit and the turnaround time is quite long.
You should consider selling "okey" gear for like 5000 gold. Instead of just aiming to sell the ones that goes for millions. Selling an okey lvl 55 item might be a bargain for someone leveling, and it's more than the ~700-800 gold you get for vendoring it. With lucky auctions, it could be a quick way to add up some extra cash :> For example ilvl60+ items with reduced level requirement is great for selling. Sold a 700dps monk weapon for 80k just yday. Crap item really, but since it was usable at 55 is was suddenly very attractive for fast lvling !
At the moment with my Gold Farming, in order to boost efficiency, I don't pick up anything except Gems.
I do have 6 or 7 mules full of gear though. I will have a look at that and see if there are some cheap quick sales there to boost the funds a bit.
Estimating gear value, now that is another big ? for me

I pleased rng very well, and she returned the favor.
baron01, that is quite an interesting build. I never considered the Chakram - Shuriken Cloud as an option. It will definitely be a viable option for Nightmare, maybe even Hell if I can up my DPS a bit.
I will do some Crypt of the Ancients runs on both Nightmare and Hell to see what the difference is in G/h. My current build is not capable of doing this on Inferno yet.
I suggest you take a look at the videos of Inferno clear with tight budget (I think there's one under one million).
With a DH it all comes from gold, skill or both. If you have lots of gold and equipment, you don't need much skill to faceroll Inferno. If you have a tight budget but you can move and shoot and dodge almost all, you can reach also the end of the game. Also there are many cases in between those two, where (more or less) the most of us are in.
Apart from that, you also have the DH spec, since you can focus on survival, be a pure glass canon and focus on damage or stay in between trying to balance both.
Also if you get some friends or a decent group in a public game, you can find its easier to clear content (at least Act1/2/3 in Inferno).
If you can get to this stats:
30k damage
20k HP
300 AR
You can clear Act 2 with little trouble.
Thanks for the feedback Silmano. I will definitely keep that in mind.
Looking at those stats, I need to triple my DPS and gain 300 AR, preferably without sacrificing my GF and PR stats.
I was very unhappy with my luck with drops to the point I seriously considered switching to gold find gear to farm gold. I would love to get a dedicated area to farming gold and gems to break the monotony of farming the same acts/areas over and over in hope of drop that may never come.
I would suggest to try spec like this for Nightmare or Hell--it should give you high mobility and effortless AOE killing. I read somewhere that gold drops are pretty much the same on Nightmare and Hell, therefore, it might be worthwhile to test it.
I would love to hear about your results when you get more tries in.
My idea about gold farming area would be as follows:
- Inferno only, lvl61+ monsters
- bot unfriendly, hard to navigate areas, challenging monsters
- only gold, gems and crafting pages.
- no patterns or recipes drops
- in order to make it attractive, there would be a chance to drop higher level gem than flawless square. Only flawless and radian star with corresponding drop chance of 6 affix ilvl63 item and legendary item for the later.
- I assume gold find would be directly impacting gem drop chance in those areas
1. Don't bot, you [redacted].
2. Gems of higher quality than flawless star don't drop, they can only be crafted.
3. I don't think there is any evidence that gold find affects gem drop rates.
I think you can run any build in nightmare/hell and it will work
On the OP, if you are sticking with your gold find set, at least change your weapon to have crit dmg and a socket, it can easily add 10k to your dps and your life will be easier.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will definitely look into getting my crit up, especially for the more focused gear (see below).
I don't see the advantages for human players of running hell-crypts for 400k if you can run act 1 inferno, selling all blue/yellow loot you pick up and get ~ 2-300k/h without goldfind gear (just 5 stacks NV) + Paragon xp* + chance on something worthy to sell. And i'd like to add actually playing the game instead of repete just the same area over and over again might enhance your fun while playing
I can see you keeping some pieces of GF, greatly increasing your dps and rockin' Act 1 just fine.
* going from P0 to P10 takes literally no time and already allows you to drop 2 GF pieces while it adds 30 dex, some vit and 30% mf.
True true, Crypt runs do get quite boring (quite quickly actually). I'm certainly looking at moving the build into Inferno and putting some focus on Paragon whilst keeping to the principle of the Gold Hunter (see below).
Update Time:
baron01 has been so kind as to donate some items to my Gold Hunter in order to boost my DPS. Big thanks buddy! Much appreciated
I jumped from 11k to 16k (and now almost 20k) with the items, sacrificing some Pickup Radius in the process. Spending some time with these adjusted stats I have come to certain conclusions.
Pickup Radius does not need to be maxed out. I dropped from 56 to 35 without noticing it. I've since dropped to 28 and it is still completely acceptable. I'm not exactly sure where the optimal amount is for the build but I'm guessing it would be at about 20. Any lower than that will start eating into the efficiency of the runs. You want to pick up as much Gold in as little time as possible after all.
Regarding the DPS boost, let me first say this. I was farming Act1 (Hell) Crypt of the Ancients and pretty much one-shotting everything there, so the boost was not really noticeable there. It did however allow me to move up to Act3 (Hell) Keep for some more interesting runs. Firstly it is more fun to farm the 3 levels of the Keep instead of the 30 seconds of Crypt of the Ancients. Secondly I get to acquire 5NV stacks in the process instead of only 1. Most importantly is the XP. Running Act3 (Hell) instead of Act1 (Hell) has a major impact on the amount of XP that I get.
I've just recently picked up (AH) Lacuni Prowlers for the +12% Movement Speed without having to sacrifice too much GF (they are rolled with +22% Gold Find). The boost in movement speed (+24% total) is definitely nice and I'm sure I will see an overall improvement in farming efficiency as a result.
My idea for the build is to keep it focused on Gold Find. I want that to stay maxxed out, or at least as close to max as possible. I definitely want to try and keep my Pickup Radius above 20 if possible. Movement Speed at +24% is also really nice for this farming build.
Slowly but surely I want to start moving things into Inferno for XP advantage. This change will gradually come as I find better gear and gain Paragon levels which will enable me to change out so GF gear for some more focused gear.
Lastly I wanted to talk about the skill set that I am currently using for this build:
For Passives I have Tactical Advantage for the speed improvement, Archery for the +15% Damage on my Bow and Vengeance mainly for the Discipline boost from health globes.
Primary is Hungering Arrow (Devouring Arrow) although this is almost never used.
Secondary is Multishot (Fire at Will) to be able to clear mobs as quick as possible.
Vault (Trail of Cinders) helps with movement and clearing elites and champs (until 1.0.5 anyway )
Preparation (Backup Plan) to get me out of those tight spots when I run out of Discipline.
Companion (Bat Companion) to keep the Hatred up.
Rain of Vengeance (Beastly Bombs) as an added bonus when elites and champs are coming up.
While I did only skim this post I'll contribute with some info. I realize that you may have already invested (somewhat strangely by your chr profile as you have a lot of items which have other than main stat on them) but some additional information for those who wish to take this route. My info is pre-1.04 but for the most part still applies.
Gold Find is not that important:
This may seem strange but maxing out GF is not very important. Think about it this way, assume your best runs right now are say at 200% GF base and are making 500k/hr. Increasing this to 300% capped will make you an additional 167k/hr. But how much did you spend to reach the cap? Probably more than 10-20 million. You now need to farm enough to pay off this additional 10-20 million debt. With an additional 167k/hr you can do the math about how many additional hours you need to grind to break even.
Buy Gear that's CHEAP:
Gold find gear is about having a supplemental set of gear which allows you to move very quickly through content. Generally it will be found that staying in nightmare or hell difficulties will be the most efficient for gold find runs. You really do not need to spend more than 300k per piece of gear with the exception of boots, and movement item and weapon.
Gear/Stat priorities:
1. Movement speed, hit the 25% cap however you like.
2. Pickup radius, you ideally want over 35 but the higher the better.
3. Main stat (our case dexterity) as you need enough dexterity/dmg to one shot any white mob reliably.
4. Max discipline (8+) on chest and quiver
5. Gold find
6. Attack Speed
7. Life on Kill because no one values it thus it's essentially a free stat and because you're one shotting mobs it's like a LoH heal.
I did not miss crit chance or crit damage, you don't want them in a gold find build. As you want every mob (not just the ones it crits on) to die on the first shot. I did this all pre-1.04 and went with the Legacy Unity ring and Lacuni Prowlers. Unity can roll movement and gold find and a socket for dex and Lacuni Prowlers can roll movement, gold find, and pickup radius with the bonus of attack speed on bracers. Generally you'll want a crossbow with a high and narrow damage range (not always the same as dps) and possibly with some dex on it, you don't need crit damage here. Bow's have a very wide range and thus can not guarantee a one shot kill thus not a great choice.
Playstyle:
The playstyle of a gold hunter is one where you one shot all white mobs, only shoot once from any one position (except elites), and in general is always moving. The max movement speed (+60% tac adv) plus vault in addition to the wide pickup radius ensures you don't ever have to turn and chase gold. You always want to be moving forward and toward new enemies. If you're wasting time turning around and picking up a 300 pile of gold or some random blue/rare that's gold wasted. Assuming you're doing this in nightmare, any rare you find isn't going to vendor over 500 gold so there really is no point to picking them up. May seem counter intuitive but just leave them on the ground. There's only a few (and maybe not with 1.04) legendaries that are worth picking up in hell and nightmare but the rest can stay on the ground.
Skills:
Ideally you want no offensive passives as almost all your skils are going to be geared toward ensuring you're always moving toward more enemies. I take TA, Vengeance, and Perfectionist. You can swap hot pursuit in for perfectionist but I find I'm not at max hatred enough to justify it. For bar skills I take HA/DA, Multi/FAW, Vault/Tumble, SS/Breathe (breaks any CC and gives 15 hate for one multishot), prep/backup, companion/ferret (if you find you're out of hate, take bat instead). The playstyle is vault, run forward til TA wears off, then repeat until you find a mob pack. Fire mulishot, immediately vault again into the area you just mowed down and fire off another multishot if the pack was bigger than your first cone and repeat this throughout. All this time your pickup radius will automatically pick up your gold and you're continuing down your merry way.
Closing:
With this in mind I probably spent maybe just over 1.5 million on my gear (sans weapon) in 1.03 so prices will be cheaper now. I think I'm only at around 220% GF with a decked out follower and have a radius of around 53 yards and can average around 650k/hr doing A3 nightmare runs. 53 yards isn't quite enough where if you see it fall you collect it but it's fairly close. You can spend more and jump into hell, but I never bothered seeing how much additional gold drops in hell vs nightmare, plus the gear costs that much more as you actually will need to push closer toward 2000 dex to ensure one shots.
