Alright, so I leveled a barb to 30 and killed Diablo. I didn't like the "tanky" aspect it seemed like you had to do with a barb so I decided to try a ranged class, and picked the DH and for the most part love it. Flew through normal and moved to nightmare. The only problem is, sure I can destroy things if they don't reach me, but when they do reach me (especially those fast one) I get obliterated. I was rocking the enchantress all through normal and picked up the template to hopefully take more hits than me but it doesn't seem like he really does.
My question is (I'm level 40 atm) what are "baelines" for my stats? I guess I've found the EPITOME of "glass cannon" because I primarily stacked dex and currently have the following:
I don't know if those look messed up or what, but I have 4280hp and it seems like it just drops if I get 2-3 mobs on me, so outside of moving is there any "secrets" on how to get the hell away from mobs or have my followers "tank" them?
I did all the way up to Inferno A1 without SS, it's not needed. Depends on your style. I used vault but yeah as a glass cannon DH be prepared to die A LOT regardless of how you play.
2-3 mobs on you? Ha just wait man, when you get to late Hell/Inferno a white hit from a normal mob will 1shot you no exaggeration. Perfect those running away skills. Don't worry, it gets better with gear.
What the heck does Smokescreen do, anyway? I know what the description says, but the mechanics of it don't seem to work out. It seems like every time I use it the mobs just continue to attack me as though nothing happened. The only real use I have on it is to break CC.
Smoke screen makes you invulnerable to everything for 1-1.5 seconds depending on the skill rune, though the monsters sometimes will continue to chase you it works very nicely as a oshit im about to die get out of jail for some discipline card. Try frost arrow to maximize cull of the weak and scatter shot instead of you other runes, plus I would say change vengeance for steady aim or sharp shooter both provide very nice increase of damage. Vengeance increase hatred never really helped me unless your using it to take advantage of the health globes cause it sounds like you mostly play solo.

I'll try this, my typical play-style is running around through trash holding RMB firing away electrocutes and killing everything. I've never had the mentality of running away, which kinda seems like the mentality you need to have unless you plan on playing "tank". I guess I'm more used to a holy trinity style of playing then having to rely solely on yourself to tank/dps/heal.
from your screenshot seems like you are using a 1hand crossbow, you should get a 2hand that will increase your dps a lot.
Also you should try new passives, Archery + Steady Aim + Sharpshooter, it will make things a lot easier until you reach 60.
So please, try what I told you and see.
- Buy a 2hand crossbow
- Change your passives.
And get back to us!
So the as% (and other nice stats) from quivers aren't worth it?

Quivers work with 2hand xbows / bows. I leveled to 57 with 2 X hand Xbows but noticed a significant DPS improvement (10k DPS) when moving to a 2h xbow. They are also better for kiting, which is basically how you play as a DH.
Your weapon is the primary source of your DPS so spend some cash on AH and get a decent+affordable one. Suggest upgrading every 4-5 levels unless you find a good drop (yeah right- lol), towards the end of the game I was upgrading my bow every level for around 20k gold.
Play around with the skills I mentioned above- your primary question was how to get survivability- most of the skills in the spec help with that
- slow from ice arrow
- SS + preparation = invulnerability for 9 seconds
- cheap backflip from evasive fire, especially if you have slower reaction times / latency (plus most hatred generation afaik)
- Tactical advantage for awesome movement speed (procs of SS / EF), I actually dropped this skill later for more DPS as I was low, not sure if it was a good move or not. I'f I'd moved to 2h Xbows sooner, probably wouldn't have been required. I use it lot on inferno (different spec) now- its great zipping around invulnerable (especially when I get 1 shot by most stuff)
Not my spec btw.... but it worked well for me solo & in groups:)
While playing your primary goal should be not to get hit... ever. With your secondary goal being to burn the enemy down. A dead demon hunter does no damage. Work on your movement skills to avoid morter and get boots with +12 movement speed to help you against the Fast monsters. Caltrops > Torturous Ground can also help you get some distance. These are also great when playing in groups with wizards. You can help all ranged classes kite enemies this way.
I do realize you're level 40 and cannot yet use that rune, but looking forward to using it might help you get through (mentally).
Also, consider grouping up to level. If you get into a group with a class that doesn't have a problem with the enemies that you do then it makes things that much easier and leveling is cake.

This is the build I'm using: http://us.battle.net...dYVT!ecb!aaZbbZ
Think the key your build is missing is SS- i.m.o this is a must-have skill
I'd go something like this

You also need to learn to kite, and some mob packs are worth trying to ignore (Extra Health + Reflect, for example)
Also- buy better gear (weapon DPS) from the AH- just put a max price of 20k and look for the highest DPS
