Its not fair, I bust my tail farming Inferno A1, and I've maxed at 500,000 gold, but yet and still I'm seeing upgrades for me (bows) for 45,000,000 gold, I mean that's crazy how in the hell are there so many people with that much gold in this game already?
I've heard "luck of drops" but what are you guys looking for to know what items will actually sell for Millions of gold, I found a set piece last week, that I put up 4 times, first 2 million, then 1million 2 times, and then it got snatched up for 500,000 (I was broke) but still, that's a set piece and I just got 500,000 for it.
The economy is driven by the players who play the most. The people who got through inferno first were able to make a killing selling the level 63 drops. Now that a lot of the gold exploits are closed, the players who didn't get the chance to ride the wave have to deal with the prices established by those who did.
Anyway, what you're looking for is high-end rares. You're looking for items with good rolls in at least three stats. If you can get 4-5 good rolls in good stats, you've probably got an item worth millions.
Set items and legendaries don't actually sell all that well unless they're partcularly good rolls or are particularly sought after items (justice lantern, stormshield, andariel's).
My advice to you is to hold off on purchases until you can make large upgrades. Buying small upgrades frequently turns into a huge cash sink, and you end up with less stats/gold spent than if you'd pooled it and bought a few large upgrades instead.

In the same boat as you mate, I just found a set piece, it is nice, i was so stoked to find it and I got a whole new motivation to play more. The stats are ok, but with the rest of the set it would be a great piece. 'Immortal Kings Will', probably middle of the range according to AH, but it never sells, because there are like 40 of them for sale at least. If i want cash straight away I would have to let it go for like 250k-500k. And to me that is just stupid, 140 hours of gameplay to sell a 1 in like 10,000 for an amount of money that doesn't help me in the slightest. May as well keep it for a barb later if I make one. Which is another 140 hours of gameplay away :/
I am all up for farming, but the cost of good items is literally astronomical, and I already feel the lack of motivation to bother to acquire them.
*Goes and switches on xbox.......*
*edit - i have yet to find all the pieces for the 'pony level' I have 2 of leorics foot, rainbow essence, but that is it, where do i get the rest? (I am at act 2 inf)
Been poor since day one. Almost got ahead then rolled a DH glass cannon. 1.0.3 repair bills have been breaking the bank. With all the ilvl 50-55 item drops I haven't been able to get ahead. I guess I just have to keep farming until I get one of those lucky drops.
iam sitting on 2 mil at the moment, luckily i do not need any upgrade now (i dont have top gear but mine is enough for my progress atm) so iam steadily increasing my wealth. most expnsive stuff i have sold - 1 hand sword (driop from act 2) with LOH for 1 mil and amulet for 800k. in terms of drops...not much luck. i understand your frustration
You can still make alot of money if you know what your doing. For drops sure you need a bit of luck but like GT4 said you need to do alittle bit of research. Find out what types of builds each class is using and what stats are best for those builds. Many people vendor or salvage items that could potentially have been good for another class. My friend made a barb first like i did and vendored a ton of items that monks or DHs could have used because the only thing in our head was. We need str/vit/ra items and LoH. that's all we knew.
So do your research and figure out what sells and what doesn't. Once you acquire a decent amount of gold whenever you have a chance, play the AH. Sometimes people put items on the AH for prices that are much lower then what they could potentially sell for because they don't realize what they have. Especially now with ilvl 63 items dropping in act 1 many players will be getting items that will sell for alot but they won't price it for the right amount.
I've actually been doing it on the RMAH. I had a decent amulet that i sold for $50 and i used that money to start buying and selling on the RMAH. I'm definitely not rich but if i keep at it i'll get there.
I was in the same boat as you. I had 600k when I hit 60 and immediately went to the AH and was suddenly down to 350k. I farmed Act 1 for 2 weeks and still only had 2 million.
Luckily, in the last week, I've gone from 2 million to 50 million just from drops. I found 2 bows with over 1k damage, 1 crossbow over 1k, a 1-hander that was 950 with great stats, a few armor pieces, and a killer ring. As strange as it sounds, most of these were found the same night.
Just don't give up. Try to get your GF and MF up and it will help more than you'd imagine.
I make a solid 5-10 mil each day by just crafting. Don't even have to play that much, just craft around 100-200 +6 items, put 10 good ones up on the AH, go out, return 2 hours later to pick up gold and fill my auctions up. In the long run it's always been profitable, even though I've had bad days, losing around 15 mil.
The old saying here is that "you need money to make money". First, even after the patch, crafting is not cheap and if you get some bad crafts at the beginning, you're suddenly out of money. Second, the rare plans cost a ton and are unreachable for a new lvl 60. Third, the AH seems to be going to crap and soon we might not be able to sell anything for a decent amount.
Everyone has made some great points but there is one other thing people have left out. There are websites that sell gold for cash. There are lots of people who pay real money for gold and use it to upgrade their gear. You can make lots of money selling loot drops or reselling ah items, but impatient people find other ways.
Its not fair, I bust my tail farming Inferno A1, and I've maxed at 500,000 gold, but yet and still I'm seeing upgrades for me (bows) for 45,000,000 gold, I mean that's crazy how in the hell are there so many people with that much gold in this game already?

Prior to 1.03, I made my money this way. I've probably had 100m come through me, but I'm pretty poor now as I'm focusing on other classes. 25m has been my biggest purchase and i don't doubt that i would end up having to spend more on a single item in the future.
Farm a shton. I've put 300+hrs into my DH.
Farming Act III/IV was lucrative.
Act III: Cydea/Azmodan runs were highly efficient. I found it less troublesome than Siegebreaker runs, and you had two easy bosses back to back. I would also just farm the corridor to Azmodan (Arreate Core) for some quick rares, there were usually 2 quick elite packs I could kill with plenty of kiting space. Gold goblin spawned a decent amount here and the tower of the curse. Get them down low and swapped to MF gear.
Act IV: I would only farm Garden Lvl 1 & 2. If you wanted to very quick runs, you could just kill 1-2 elite packs in Garden Lvl I. There usually 1 elite pack sitting down the staircase outside Rakanoth's dungeon. Also chance of goblin spawning here too.
Act II: Farm the hell out of the goblin. Boring but efficient.
It's all luck and RNG, but you could make a lot of money quick from ACT 3/4 if you found 1 or 2 items that day.
Top sellers: All-resist gear w/ main stats+vitality. High DPS 1 hands w/ LOH/socket. Mostly 2H DPS weapon didn't sell unless you got 1200-1300dps. Undercut and get your loot out of your stash. 10 Item limit is dumb, so cut by 100-200k if required depending on items. Also good sellers were high MF gear w/ main stats.
I made mistake of selling my 70 dex NATALYA chest w/ 3 socket for <4m because my beckon sail w/ 1 socket were a lot better. GG Blizzard and IAS nerf.
With 180+ magic find (before getting NV stacks) and almost 50k dps, my DH can do a speed act-1 inferno farm in about 30 minutes, and get about 50 rares. Most suck, but when playing the lotto, your odds go up with each ticket.
So far I've gotten 3 amulets worth 25+ million and one worth probably 150-200. I'm saving them all for the RMAH, which I haven't set up yet because I am lazier than a sloth. I got a pair of pants that I sold for 10 million - I wanted to save them for the RMAH, but the money bought me a 1300 dps xbow which vastly increased my farming speed, so it was worth it. I've gotten 4-5 legendaries, but all sucked. I saved them for a while, then got sick of them taking up space in my stash so I smashed them for mats at the forge. The next day I read that Blizzard was going to buff them, GDI >_<
Look up a farming guide on youtube. Try to avoid time-wasting traps such as clicking on corpses, treasure chests (except for Resplendent), etc. and shooting pots and barrels. Also try to avoid exploring every last nook and cranny everywhere you go. Your goal is to spend the least possible amount of time to kill the most possible amount of elite packs. It might sound kinda anal and not-fun, but trust me, getting truckloads of rares is more than enough fun to make up for it, and selling them for millions is even more fun =)
On weapons you're looking at least 800 dps, and only that low if it has other good stats like a primary damage stat (dex for bows and crossbows, int dex or str for 1handers, or crit damage). 2hand melee weapons are pretty much worthless, though if you find a great one you can try to sell it and see what happens.
On armor you usually want a high primary stat (dex, int, str), preferably more than half of the maximum value for that slot. You can look up the maximum values per slot by searching this forum, or searching google for it (which is how I personally found this forum). After that, a few other stats which add to the value are all resists, vitality, gold find, magic find, crit chance and crit damage (among others). As always, the closer to the maximum value the stat is, the more value it has. Eg. something with 65 to all resists is better than something with 20 to all resists. All items are more valuable if they are socketed.
Rares can have up to 6 modifiers. Sellable rares generally have at least 3 decent mods which go together (for example, dex + vit + magic find, but not dex + int + str), with at least two of them having medium value vs. their maximum potential value (eg. 150 dex, if the max for that slot is 300). Godly rares have 4-6 desireable stats with most of them being closer to their maximum value. As an item gets closer and closer to its theoretical best possible stats, the price goes up astronomically since those seeking perfection are willing to pay a lot for it. Certain stats go extremely well together, such as gold find + magic find. Rings, amulets and gloves with dex, crit chance and crit damage will generally fetch millions, provided the values aren't terribly low. Etc. If an item doesn't have a primary stat (int, dex, str), then the other mods need to be excellent for it to be worth much. Or rather, it may technically be worth a bit, but there are much fewer people willing to go without their primary stat so it might not sell as quickly.
That isn't nearly the half of it, there is a lot more that determines an item's value, but hopefully it gets you off to a good start. When you get a rare you think is possibly worth something, I'd highly recommend searching the auction house for similar items and seeing what they're selling for. Base your price on that, and if you're unsure, price it a bit higher - the worst that can happen is it won't sell.
With 5 Neph stacks I reach 300gf and then roflstomp my way through 30min Warden / Butcher runs on my Barb and end up with 150k and a bag nearly totally full of rares. Good times.
I'll say it again:
If you feel, you have bad RNG (like me), do the AH. You don't need to spend much time, e.g. yesterday after I wrote my post in this thread, while eating, I got a mace for 1 million which now has a 3 million bid.
You do not need RNG as long as there's the AH if you're clever.
This.
I've been away from home on vacation, and since I only have my laptop, I can't really play D3 at a framerate above 5. So in order to make gold, I've tried my hand at flipping stuff on the AH.
My strategy is to bid on items, in an attempt to get them for 30 to 50% under their true value, and to then turn around and sell them. This is because I haven't had all that much luck sniping items on the AH (aside from a 1h xbow I bought for 50k and sold for 500).
I havne't made a HUGE amount of money through flipping stuff on the AH (I've only made like 1 mil in the past few days), but then again I have only bought and sold three items, and I've spent maybe a total of 15 minutes in the past week checking around on the AH, placing bids, etc.

Search AH for identical items
Undercut by a decent amount
??????

That's it really.

I believe in Karma, so luck rotates itself around.
Like 300hours played, only found one legendary that sold was 125k lol.
