Demon hunter, in general, especially while you're gearing up, is kill them before they kill you, spam smoke screen. Is it really a surprise to anyone that having more damage makes content easier when relying on smokescreen's mechanics seeing as how 99% of demon hunters get one shot by the weakest of mobs in acts 3/4.
The other thing you have to be careful about, but you didn't note, was not popping SS too soon. You suggest preemptively popping it, but if you do it at the wrong time (too early), you're likely to get caught with your pants down in that 0.5 second bridge between the time lingering fog's effect and cooldown end. If people are going to smoke screen glass cannon diablo's clones down, don't panic because it will get you killed.
You can just pick up the stun rune with Rain of Vengeance and perma stun your clone. That's how I managed my first kill before I could just blow it up in a 1.5 second window.

very good, I will have to try this rain of vengeance strat
Should I use Rain on myself right after Diablo disappears and hope for the best, or wait til the clone spawns then use ss and rain at the same time?
The first clone will spawn where Diablo disappears from, so you should drop RoV in that area. Pre-SS after about 2 seconds, drop RoV and spam tentacles at that spot. From there on out you just need to be on your toes with smoke screen as Diablo vanishes.
Clone comes out at 100%, 66%, and 33% I believe. Your best bet is to watch the mini map for Diablo's icon to disappear because your shadow clone will shortly appear after that. You can pre-emptive with rain of vengeance, and spam SS when your clone appear. Don't bother running, just mash your nether tentacle or impale. I like impale personally for the speed+burst. I like the 100% damage to crit especially. Additionally, since you know where to run around the map w/o causing Diablo to teleport on you, you can just run around until you have full hatred, discipline, and all your cooldown refresh before triggering shadow clone spawning.
What's the point of this video?.. I mean, "pop smoke and nuke" is natural for a dh, I mean, if a dh doesn't do that and complains that clones kill him, he's probably just bad?
If you don't have the dps to nuke it down you can also SS then vault out of there and use hungering arrow's sorta autotargetting to stutterstep shoot the clone off screen to dodge everything. How I did it anyways.

He won't teleport onto you if you don't touch the corners (inner and outer) of the level in any of the phases. You can see all this covered and more on an old existing topic where an *undergeared* player takes out diablo at http://www.diablofans.com/topic/46938-possibly-worst-geared-dh-inferno-diablo-kill-post-ss-nerf/
