Currently my DH is level 44 and at the start of act III NM. I had lots of trouble in act II due to mobs 2 shooting me. My gear at that moment was pretty horrendous since I had only 4K HP. A friend gave me some gold and pointed me at AH.
After figuring out how does its search filter works I've started buying items which have dext and vit on it, ignoring all other stats (preferably a socket if possible) sometimes even ignored if it doesn't have dex as long as it has vitality. I've socketed all 26 dex gems wherever I could and 9% life in my helm.
After few hours and few auction house visits at level 44 I'm sitting with 19,5K HP (talk about upgrades), 578 dexterity which nets me around 1250DPS at my lvl.
Now the question stands: Should I lower my HP for nightmare and net some more dex?
The thing that confused me is that my wizard friend who's level 60 and has few legendary items has 24K HP, which seems a bit low compared to my current health.
As for my ability setup, for trash I'm using Caltrop with 2 second snare, Smoke Screen 3 seconds, Elemental arrow frost, preparation with 60% heal. My generator is Hungaring Arrow with split shots and spender Twin Chakram.
For boss fights I'm using Mark for death (VoD), Smoke Screen 3 seconds, Sentry, Preparation with 60% heal. Generator Bola Shot, and spender Impale with Impact.

I'm in inferno act 2 and have 14k life. Life is not what keeps you alive.
I soloed the Skeleton King and I'm also a demon hunter.
Damage is damn important in my opinion.
EDIT: Adding more detail to my post.
I had 32k life at one point, however, my damage was low. This caused the monsters to wipe me before I got the chance to kill them because I took too long to kill them.
So I swapped around and made a necessary sacrifice.
I kill monsters in 3 blows and champs in under 2 minutes (depending on perks), whereas previously it would've doubled or tripled the time and I would've run out of health by then as the potions I get were only at the mystic level.
Damage is what got me through hell and act 1 inferno, not life.
Nah. Dex Vit are probably your best stats for levelling anyway. Save your money for levelling your blacksmith/jeweler/inventory... then when it starts getting hard in game again just look for better gear. You'll probably need a ton of money before starting inferno.

Don't listen to the above post regarding the blacksmith. <<< The blacksmith is a piece of crap.
The only reason I'm going to level him to 10 is because I found a plan to use on level 10. If you don't get plan drops, don't bother. Use the AH or buy from a friend. At least you know what you're getting then.
The jeweller I levelled, mostly because it's easier for me to progressively upgrade gems than buy them from the AH.
Try to find a balance between vit, dex, and attack speed. CorDa 616 is right: if you kill them fast enough, they can't kill you first. However, you're inevitably going to take some damage, so just have enough vit to survive a few blows.

i would choose my own religion and worship my own spirit, but if he ever preached to me i wouldn't want to hear it. i'd drop him, a forgotten god, languishing in shame; and then if i hit stormy seas, i'd have myself to blame.

I'll do that then. Gonna keep this HP till I hit Hell and see how will it go.
Regarding BS and JC, I've got 2 friends where one leveled BS and other JC who do all the crafting for me. I'm sending them all mats and gems so they can just upgrade it for me, so I've decided not to level neither before I get to 60.
One more question, while we're at it, dw VS bow VS xbow? I'm currently choosing combination which will net me most DPS, but somehow I'm getting a feeling that at inferno bow>rest.

I believe that it is:
Dual-Wielding xbow > One-Hand xbow + Quiver > 2-Handed + Quiver.
I would...disagree with that. A lot. My opinion, and I think the general consensus, is that Dual Wielding Xbows is actually generally the worst option, although please correct me if I'm mistaken here.
For pure damage, the 2H Bow + quiver seems to be the best choice. For high attack speed and crit, 1H xbow + quiver is the best. The 2H Xbow seems to be the worst choice. Dual Wielding is crap, period.

Sartukk is right; I went on a shopping spree late last night and had been up to that point using dual 1h Xbows. I got a pair of capped level rare crossbows and a capped level rare bow and quiver and just compared the damage on my paper doll. My thinking was "why would anybody do the +quiver combo because of how many stats were avail on the off hand?" but it turns out finding a decent quiver boosted my damage by a good amount. Thank goodness nothing is soulbound in this game.
And one more thing: I think I read a forum post somewhere that all things being PERFECT the best possible gear is a Bow+Quiver.
I'm at Hell Act III and playing with 3 more friends I was dying A LOT. I got a high DPS (7k damage without buffs) but only 9k life. I change a little bit and got myself to 14k without losing much dps and I survive a little more now. Don't go out to much vitality, go full dps with little vitality to survive some blows and you are OK.
And plz, go to 2h + quiver.....I have a 2h cross that give +att speed and dex and boy....your DPS go sky high.
In inferno you get 1 shot by almost anything, just need to kite and smoke screen your face off.
Keep in mind for killing the butcher in Inferno you want at least 33k HP so you can survive his chains. I did this by changing out all my gems to vit. It's crazy how much gold you can get in inferno with 5 stacks of valor.
I'm currently at 29k HP with 1500ish dex. All of my gear except my xbow has vit and dex.
Also, I use a 2h xbow for the crazy crits with sharpshooter. 50k crits with frost arrow are nice when you're kiting. 1H xbow would be good for +disc. BTW anyone know the max disc we can have?
Dont spend over 200k on the AH for a weapon IMO. You can find some good ones for way less that will get you into act2 inferno where you can farm some really good stuff.
Good luck, have fun throwing yourself at invulnerable packs
I would always up my dex first and then see how much vit I could get to go along with it. Doesn't matter how much health you have if you are putting out subpar damage.
I had been using dual handbows since I could and now @Lvl40 I had been putting out just barely over 1kDPS. Friend who I used to hand my items down to had passed me and passed me his 2h Bow and Quiver, I am now sitting at around 2.5 dps with better stats.
I like having the look of 2 handbows but the jump in changing that weapon setup is just phenominal.
im rolling with bow + quiver, and using the passive that gives 15% dmg to bows. Dont see myself switching out of that, unless i get really really unlucky on my drops.

I can see what you see not. Vision milky, then eyes rot.
When you turn, they will be gone. Whispering their hidden song.
Then you see what cannot be. Shadows move where light should be.
Out of darkness, out of mind. Cast down into the Halls of the Blind
I'm now level 52. I've switched some gear around and now I've got 17K HP and lots more dexterity 989 at the moment. Still didn't saw any decent bow and quiver to get around with so still using 2x hand xbows.
I've started hell act 1 atm, got no issues killing elites, aoe packs or anything at the moment.
Thanks on everything, I'll try to get my dexterity a lot higher and get bow/quiver.
I've also adapted on using impale as my single target spender (with impact, kiting elites is a breeze), so another question is:
Is it worth sacrificing 15% flat damage for increased crit damage (my impale crits for 6K at this levell)?

I'm now mid act IV also on nightmare and a while ago I started going for dexterity/vitality gear - at level 51, currently have 3.5k damage and 14.5k HP - more than enough so far, I cut through like a knife through warm butter. By using the AH you should be able to find a happy medium of HP and DPS - and a bit of luck on drops too!
I use caltrops/jagged spikes, hungering arrow/devouring, fan of knives/hail of knives, vault/tumble, strafe/rocket storm and alternate between elemental arrow ball/frost. Passive I have Sharp Shooter/Vengeance/Steady Aim. I love strafe, being able to fire and move makes things so much easier - hoping I can continue with it in Hell/Inferno!
Definitely good to have HP - solo'd Diablo on normal with 1200HP - felt harder than normal but probably good prep for harder levels!
You need just enough HP to not get 1 shotted, maybe 2 shotted. After that, forget about Vitality for now.
+max discipline is amazing, make sure you get it.
2h + Quiver is obviously the best combo.
Kinda shocked at just how bad DW is for the DH and its her signature weapons.
The BS is pretty much worthless, might as well rename his ass Gheed. You will likely spend more making an decent item than what it would cost you to simply buy it on the AH. I only leveled mine, because he is universal to all my characters and he should be able to make something worthwhile at max level, or at least I hope.

I feel damage is more important then vitality for us. Especially since we have so many ways of survival and we are ranged. When I was around level 55ish I was kicked from a group for having 10K HP.. because the other people just didn't like that my health was that low. Even though I never died and did awesome DPS.
Now that I am level 60 and working in Inferno.. I have been working on my gear and it isn't the best but it's decent. Sitting at about 32K HP without trying and my DPS is around 13K which I suppose needs to be raised because I had some Demon Hunter bragging he had 40K DPS. >_>
