So, I've been farming Act 1 (mostly for money because my luck with rares is complete and utter garbage) for nearly two weeks now and today I finally decided to try Act 2. Needless to say I'm making this post because 18 deaths later (before even making it to the bridge), I gave up.
Currently I'm built glass cannon style, but my follower gets manhandled by everything and anything with the ability to get the jump on me kills me instantly.
My questions are as follows.
1. Is it better to go with stamina and health over damage in Act 2? I already know about Act 3 and above, so my question only pertains to Act 2. I do have some stam gear that I use for Butcer (so I can correct mistakes should I make them) that puts me up to 37k health but around 25k damage (full sharpshooter). That is as opposed to near 40k damage and 17k health in my usual gear.
2. Is the Templar still useful in Act 2? My Templar has 52k and change health, 27% block (at 1445-1549), 21% dodge, 39.43% reduction from armor and 47 base resistance from intellect (with additional resists in arcane, poison, and physical). My Enchantress and Scoundrel are both still level 59 with level 60 weapons waiting for them if I need to level them up. If the answer is no, then what follower is better to use and why?
3. If the answer to question 1 is no, then is my damage too low for Act 2? Currently with fully stacked sharpshooter I hit close to 40k. I've been saving up for upgrades (so far I'm at near 600k gold), but high damage boost items seem either a. rediculously expensive or b. completely unavailable.
4. Should I use different skills? While my skills have been great for Act 1 farming, perhaps they're just not suited for the style of combat in Act 2 (since there's a drastic amount more to avoid than in Act 1). My current build is as follows.
Hate gen : Hungering Arrow - Devouring Arrow
Hate dump : Elemental Arrow - Nether Tentacles
Discipline use : Smoke Screen - Lingering Fog, Preparation - Backup Plan, Marked For Death - Mortal Enemy, Companion - Bat Companion
I'm mostly just curious if I actually should be on Act 2 (and not struggling so drastically) or if I've still got a ways to go before I can get there.
Hard to say. Most DH i see go full dmg and just rely on intense kiting to progress through the game. I'm a monk and just get molested even trying to advance in act 2. I don't think dmg reduction is going to do you any good.
I'm sitting at 70% from armor, 62% from resistances, and only deal 14k dps
Even with that much dmg reduction i get mauled all day.
Trust me its just the fact that act 2 mobs are passively annoying to deal with. Catmen throw mortors and wasps shot 4 baby fly's at you. I feel like i'm playing this game when dealing with act 2 mobs in general.
While that does give me some bit of answers, I really am more curious about the other aspects as related to DH. Thank you for that video, though. That thing was hilarious!
Well, I was using the Templar as my meat shield, but in Act 2 he doesn't seem very meaty (more like paper shield there). So, is it because he needs better stats to be useful or because he just stops being effective?
For Dh, of course. Plus the other questions remain a bit up in the air to me.
Not sure about DH, but I was stuck in Act 2 before the bridge too. I went full dps build.
Then I gave up, went back Act 1 to farm till I read this thread from another wiz who did Arcane Hydra + Arcane Orb + Temporal Flux build. It worked like a charm, defeated Maghda and now I'm collecting Kulle's blood.
I would call that a snare build, bcoz it basically slows the enemy's movement speed which Act 2 have a lot of fast mobs.
Now I'm stuck trying to collect the 2nd Kulle's blood bcoz every freaking corner of the dungeon has elites. I think Blizz threw in like 20 packs of elites into a dungeon. Ran into a Jailer + Shielding + Waller + Molten, tried to kill but too tough, so I decided to kite them, but then meet another pack with Jailer + Fire Chain + Frozen + Teleporter. Now I have two packs hunting me down. I kept on running and f**k my life, I ran into yet another pack of elites with Vortex + Frozen + Shielding + Arcane Enchanted. GG. 1 pack with Vortex, 2 packs with Jailer, totally no escape and devastated.
I'm on act4 now with 60k dps with sharpshooter, 1.22 as, %15 crit chance etc. means utter shit overall. Still the game is easy, i'm only passing mobs with immune adds and fast ones.
Act II is annoying as shit, but as you gain more and more DPS it becomes easier. I can now pretty much ROFLstomp act III, so I guess Act IV will come when I get even better gear.
When I started out, Act II was impossible. Just keep farming and keep upgrading gear.
Just curious, with kind of gear you could ROFLstomp soul rippers in Act III? Not even elite/champion pack, just the normal ones
I cleared Act 1 about 1.5 weeks ago, and just spent the weekend helping friends out with Hell and Act 1 Inferno. Then I just decided to give Act 2 a go. Managed to clear it in a day, and it was really tough and demotivating! Geting 1 shot from the wind blowing (sarcasm!) can be really really bad for motivation. But..I've been glass cannon since Normal so in a way I've been training for this for a long time xD
All I can say is, be really quick on your SS. Managed to solo Belial after about 15+ tries and man that felt good! Now I'm stuck in Act 3 lol..the part where you decent through the keep's dungeons. Blizz really has a sadistic sense of humour. Walk in, 3 rooms away, Soul Ripper Champion pack, Mortar/Teleport/Reflect Damage/Waller.
Logged out, logged back in to re-roll the elites. Four times in a row, four Soul Ripper champs with Teleport and Reflect Damage. I stopped playing there lol...

I'm also in act 3 now and I feel that the beginning of the act is really annoying. after you came to the bridge of korsik it really gets easier.
Yeah, I had so much trouble with the light the beacon quest cos of Reflect Damage/Mortar/Invulnerable Minions/Fast... My monk friend and I had to death flop ourselves through that particular champ mob T_T
Second act is hardcore.
You will be one shoted by everything.
You will get pissed.
You won't be able to beat fast+ something and some other don't remember.
I was doing it yday with 72k dps buffed.
You should buy 900dps weapon ==>100k.
Doing act3 atm. BUT im lacking speed, that's why im farming for boots dex/moving speed
Very true. After Act 1, I tried Act 2. Died a couple of times then logged out cos it was late. That weekend I just needed a break from the 1shots and helped my friends get through Hell. Then on the following weekend (didn't play much during the week) I just told myself that I will finish Act 2 at any cost. From getting used to getting 1 shot from everything, pesky insects that are tough to see against the colour of sand, having lacuni's kill you before they land cos of latency, getting stuck on a Reflect Damage/Desecration/Extra Health/Arcane Enchanted spider champ pack (who by default already move pretty fast) and watching 4 stacks of NV buff ticking down slowly to expiry and no way of getting past that mob and finding a tactic or small changes that were able to change the tide of battle.
Hell, I spent 2.5 hours on Butcher Inferno cos I didn't want to switch skills and lose my NV buff. Normal Diablo with 1.2k HP etc etc, just gotta run and run and run and change how you play
That's the joy of playing a DH. Trying out everything to deal with a situation, or changing how you play with the skills you have on your bar (so that NV doesn't drop off xD ). One shot Zoltan Kulle, and died to Belial about 15+ times before I managed to survive Phase 2 of the fight solo. Act 2 done!
I stopped counting deaths at 20 and started counted $$ spend. Went from ~450k down to ~200k today alone trying to solo Belial. 2nd phase is tough and I tend to get cocky after getting passed it cause hes piss easy after that (least for glass cannons).
Just keep on trucking and sooner or later things will fall into place, the stars will align and your luck will be good.
Hell, I spent 2.5 hours on Butcher Inferno cos I didn't want to switch skills and lose my NV buff.
Sorry to have to call your bullshit here, but you can't spend 2.5 hours without losing the NV buff, because it runs out after 30 minutes.
After the buff is gone I relog to farm 5 stacks again, and 2.5 hours is just the amount of time I spent Also, it was like 2am and I wasn't playing at my best xD Woke up in the morning fresh and got it down after 30 mins (2 hours the day before)~
Ah, I didn't think about that
Why would you wipe on The Butcher for so long anyway?
I was totally using the wrong skills hahaha. I was still thinking of "Hey I came from Hell, Inferno isn't that hard hehe, I can just Impale the boss". Apparently not... I was also SS'ing through every ability which was a waste, since everything can be avoided except the AoE chains.
Not really sure how old this post is or if you've already gotten your answer, because I only read the questions, (most of the time trolls and dumb ppl fill out the rest of the thing). I was having the same problem with inferno mode act 2, but I was also trying to play like the truly elite players that e1 else tries to emulate. I found that its a lot more forgiving if u sac a little bit of dmg (only if its unavoidable) to get some resist, preferably go with pieces with around the same dex and vit that you current gear has but look for stuff that has All resistances on it. All resistances apply to physical dmg, if your not an awesomely fantastical player that gets hit occasionally when trying to kite an elite mob around for 30 miles, having some resists will help.
If you are an awesomely fantastical player... well then I don't think you would have posted this topic.
In hindsight, try getting some resistance to make act 2 feel a little more forgiving. also getting some pieces with movement speed boost isnt bad either, try to shoot for 15-20% if it don't break the bank. Things will seem a little smoother at/around 200 resist on all, but avoiding stuff and not making mistakes will still make or break a kill.
I would like to add that your dmg with SS is still a bit low as well, im sitting around 57k with SS up and I have around 160 resist, takes me a little bit longer to kill things than other ppl but I have also only spent around 1mil total on my gear.

2.9k armor.
14k hp
35k DPS (Unstacked, 47.5k stacked)
150+ resists
Pretty much getting 1 shot but I seem to be unable to actually kill anything. I feel like my damage is no where near it needs to be for this act.

Your damage seems too low to me, maybe try to grab a cheap weapon (700 dps can be found for 50k from time to time) from AH?
