Glasscannon or Survivability?

  • #1
I'm just starting to work on soloing Inferno and I'm wondering what I should try and gear for.

I've seen people get ridiculous damage with glasscannon builds, but I'm not sure I'm a fan of dying in one hit to every single mob.

A (mage) friend says resists are the way to go, but I've heard others say that resists/vit are useless for DHs past Act I or II Inferno.

    Thoughts?

I go with the glass cannon / magic find build. I have about 170mf with about 80k damage w/ SS. My glass cannon without magic find build is at 101k damage.

I recommend just going glass cannon. I've never really seen a DH survive a hit unless you have ridiculous resist/hp which makes your damage ridiculously low.

Glass cannon build for solo and team play.

It is probably possible to get enough resists, armor and vitality to not get oneshot in the later acts, but it will not be easy to achieve (you will really need very, very good gear all tailored toward defense to make any difference). It will also come at the expense of damage stats, which will make it hard, perhaps nigh impossible to kill anything of value. I haven't put too much effort into gearing my demon hunter after I cleared diablo pre-SS-nerf (when we were pretty broken), but because of the sheer amount of gear you'll need to go from getting 1-hit to 2-hit to multi-hit, I'd suggest going with glasscannon and play dodgeball.

I'm currently at 600 resist all 108k dps, 29k hp. I don't get one shot often, unless its some mean mob, but I do get 2 shot. I think a good place to be with resists as a dh is 700. You don't need to sacrafice dps to have high resists. Just find all the gear with high resists and high dex. The only place you really lose dps are rings/neck/gloves. Thats the place where it's a toss up. Only my rings and gloves have resistance. There are gloves out there with everything, but they cost about 50million.

I am up to diablo atm. With my current resists he either 1 or 2 shots me depending on luck. I'm pretty sure another 100 resists all will go a long way. There is a pretty big difference between getting 1 shot and 2 shot, as sad as that may sound.

On a side note, I did get to diablo as a glass cannon build. I prefer resists for farming, in long caves where making the slightest mistake causes you to run back for a minute.

So you're farming without any MF gear? It seem like you would be better off with dmg/mf if farming is your game, but that's just my opinion.

Sorry to sort of snake your thread but I have a question - how do you guys get to 100k damage? AND 25k+ hp? I'm at 69k damage now with like 17k hp, in Act II. What's your gear like when you have that much hp and still have a lot of damage? Did it cost you a fortune?

Glass-cannon most of our survivality abilities promotes of not getting hit, the other range class dont have such of awesome abilities, but they have awesome armor boost or dmg reduction things that we dont have, and it breaks taking hits for us. (Not to mention that we use dexterity that doesnt give extra resists, only RNG dodge)

Untill you can afford like 25mil+ for your gear go glasscannon, after that add survivability without loosing much of your dmg.

What others have said. Unless you can cough up millions for great rolled gear with both survivability and damage stats just go for max damage and rely on dodging, kiting and smokescreen. Which Blizzard seems to want us to do..
Trust is not given, but earned. That's a lesson well learned.

So what stats other then dex should i be going for in which slots?

Glascannon is the way to go without INSANE gear, although I still try to maintain a decent amount of HP, around 25-30k. Makes it possible to survive minor hits, like 1 tick of fire/poison zones, the butcher's aoe chains and stuff like that.

Farmed Act 2/3 yesterday with another DH, he only had like 15k HP and died at least twice as often as I did.

I went with this type of mindset. I want to be able to survive a tick from desecration/plagued/arcane sentry etc. And possibly a hit from a small creature. I currently have 37k health points, a little overkill but I got a nice waist yesterday which boosted my health by alot. My damage is just under 30k without sharpshooter (I need a new wep :D). Working my way through act 4 inferno hell rifts atm, but I'm going to bridge farm in act 3 today instead.

Well...this weapon dropped to my friend when we were doing siegebreaker and he gave it to me...I would recommend you buying some less dps but still decent weapon (1000 dps one is about 1M on AH) and with such weapon (or even less powerful like 950dps) you should be able to do solo runs 5stacks - zoltun kule, belial, sell drops and then buy sweetie like this. You can easily make 1M a day, probably more if you are a bit lucky in dropping and then it's easy - stuff like this weapon costs probably 6M, in few days it will be less.

i feel the same way... beeing one shotted all the time and running back to die again is not that much fun.
but you can not go with resis and hp... your dmg will suck and you MAYBE are a 2 shoot afterwards -_-

Glass cannon build for solo and team play.

46k hp, 240-360 resists, 66k dmg without sharpshooter.
I can take 1 hit from most mobs 2 from many in act3/4 (maybe not 2hits in act 4)
Just try to balance them all out.

the thing is, maybe if you go 4 pure dmg, you can kill them 50-100% faster. killing them faster there is less space 4 mistakes or just bad luck... so i dont think being a 2 hit target is worth loosing dmg :/

not necessarily, you can find gear with excellent dps and also excellent survivality, the thing is.... That gear is very expensive, and in a lot of cases, selling that item will grant you the chance to increase your dps is your gear is bad...
